In the southeastern corner of the Texas Panhandle, the town of Lubbock is known for its vibrant arts scene, with state-of-the-art theaters, museums, and galleries. Almost every night, you’re sure to find live music happening somewhere, whether it be at one of the city’s many performance halls, a local dive, or on the patio of a craft brewery. Lubbock also produces the best wines in Texas — some 90 percent of the wine grapes grown in the state come from the area. There are several vineyards and wineries in town who welcome day tasters.

Lubbock is a college town, home to Texas Tech University, whose museum includes Lubbock Lake Landmark, an archaeological and natural history preserve. Located at the northern edge of the city, the site shows evidence of almost 12,000 years of human habitation in the region. The campus museum also includes the 27-acre National Ranching Heritage Center, an outdoor historical park packed with original structures including a railroad depot, saddle store, and homesteads. After a day of seeing the sights, stop by one of Lubbock’s barbecue restaurants.

The best times to visit Lubbock are spring and fall, when temperatures are warm but not too hot, and the weather is perfect for exploring the town’s outdoor entertainment. Summers can get quite hot, so be sure to pack appropriate sun protection. Lubbock has a thriving cultural scene, with something going on almost every day of the week, with many exciting festivals happening in summer and fall. In July, an arts festival recognizes local visual and performance artists with two days of events. Lubbock Uncorked celebrates the region’s wine production with tastings, wine dinners, and live music each November. Temperatures drop in winter, but they don’t often go below freezing, and the city rarely sees snow.

The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences

Dedicated to the pioneering singer, who hailed from Lubbock, the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences in the city’s cultural district began the area’s revitalization efforts. The venue includes two world-class theaters where aspiring artists and renowned musicians come to perform. You can grab a bite in its bistro and enjoy performances from Lubbock’s ballet troupe and orchestra.

American Wind Power Center and Museum

As you approach the city of Lubbock, you’ll notice miles of enormous wind turbines generating energy via their gigantic blades. Prairie Dog Town

Just north of the city of Lubbock, the Mackenzie Recreational Area is a 542-acre park offering a variety of recreational activities. One highlight of the park is Prairie Dog Town, where you can watch from afar as black-tailed prairie dogs (ground squirrels) pop in and out of hundreds of burrows.
