Why should I pay and communicate only through Airbnb?
1. Paying outside Airbnb can expose you to fraud.
Paying and communicating through Airbnb helps ensure that hosts and guests are protected under our Terms of Service, cancellation and refund policies, Host Guarantee, Host Protection Insurance program and other safeguards. Paying outside the Airbnb system exposes you to risk, and we can’t provide access to these benefits when reservations aren’t booked and paid for directly through Airbnb.
We’ve also built many safeguards into Airbnb to help keep your information secure, and we're improving on those safeguards all the time. If you pay or communicate outside Airbnb, you miss out on these security benefits. That makes it harder for us to protect your information and puts you at greater risk of fraud and other security issues, such as phishing.
2. Our payment and messaging systems keep things simple.
We designed our payment system to give everyone peace of mind. When a guest pays through Airbnb, payments go through our secure structure. Guests pay Airbnb when they book a place, and Airbnb releases the money to hosts 24 hours after the guest checks in.
Messaging on Airbnb also makes it easy to find and reference important reservation details like a listing's address, your itinerary, check-in details, and other useful information. When you use Airbnb's messaging system, you also benefit from security features we've built into it.
3. If someone tries to get you to pay outside Airbnb, let us know.
Never pay for a reservation outside Airbnb's website. If someone asks you to pay for a reservation outside our on-site payment system—or you think someone might be sending you links to a fake Airbnb webpage—email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and click in your message thread with that person.
