Nestled into a hillside in Alexander, NC — 18 minutes from Asheville, and a world apart. This earth-sheltered retreat sits 40% underground, making it naturally quiet, cool in summer, and deeply cozy in winter. The king bedroom is designed for dark nights and deep sleep. Romantic, restorative, and built for people who actually need to unwind.

The space
⭐ Need more space?
The entire duplex—both units together—is available as the Teapot: airbnb.com/h/teapot.

Looking for just the upper unit instead? The Artist's Studio, Inkberry, is listed here: airbnb.com/h/inkberry.

The Tea House blends modern simplicity with natural charm. Dark siding meets naked concrete walls below. The longest wall faces due east, filled with windows and natural light. Tall doors and ceilings lift you up while the massive walls ground you. The living and dining rooms flow seamlessly into the kitchen, with vibrant artwork, rugs, and accent walls creating an eclectic, welcoming feel. Radiant heated concrete floors keep you warm in winter; the thermal mass keeps things cool in summer.

The couch is twin mattress size — remove the cushions and add sheets for a proper twin guest bed, making the Tea House comfortable for three.
Through the big glass doors, a flagstone patio with hot tub and fire pit awaits — perfect for stargazing. Blueberry bushes grow behind the berm; help yourself. A large pile of firewood is stacked by the Quonset hut — please help yourself for the outdoor fire pit.

I’ve been many places, seen beautiful spaces. I’m a designer! Paddlesports enthusiast and 2x surf kayak world champion. I recently designed my earth sheltered home and resurrected the quonset hut. I'm asking for help paying for it all, so I'd like to have you come visit and experience one of the coolest residential/professional spaces around. Optional stand up paddle down the nearby French Broad, and onsite massage. Coming soon: Sauna and plunge.
