Rustic one room log cabin. Built in 1931. Bathroom is on the back porch with both hot and cold water. The cabin is equipped with an airconditioner, heater, refrigerator, microwave, stove, grill and a queen sized bed. Setting is rural and tranquil. Very quiet, beautiful place to relax and unplug. No TV or WIFI, but good cellular signal.
  • Very cozy and warm! Expect minimalistic, but a good getaway!

Enjoy a quiet country setting stay, on the edge of town. Only 2 miles from interstate 70. This is an upstairs luxury apartment with a loftly approach to the entrance. It can accomodate up to 4 people comfortably. Vandalia has lots to offer. The historic Old State Capitol where Abraham Lincoln once visited , a walking trail in Rogier Park and beautiful Vandalia Lake.
  • This was by far one of the best Airbnb stays I could ask for! Gail has really set the bar for excellence. The stairs to the living area are steep but they're aware of that and once you're up there it's clear that it's totally worth it. They have great attention to detail and even provide small comforts like board games, throw blankets, and details about the local area (maps, menus, brochures, etc.). Spacious, welcoming, private, everything you could ask for. We highly recommend this place and hope to stay there again sometime.

    Fatima2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This was probably one of the best Airbnb's I've stayed in. From the toothbrushes in the bathroom to the comfortable beds, this definitely exceeded our expectations!

    Michelle2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We simply loved this home. It felt like a private escape in a far away land of tales and magical happenings. The bedrooms each had their own “wing”, with an excellent great room that allowed for great late night conversations and bonding. The kitchen and bathroom had everything one could need, with all needs anticipated. The beds were comfy and felt like sleeping on a cloud. The location was excellent - beautiful area, very quiet, peaceful, and safe. The views from both bedrooms were pastoral. Superb host, lovely home. Very highly recommend, would definitely stay again!!

Quaint, cozy, cottage nestled on Beautiful Lake Vandalia. 1870’s farm house with all original decor. Full size granite bar located in 4 seasons room overlooking lake. Full size commercial kitchen. Stand up walk in shower, washer and dryer, spacious walk in closet. Plenty of free safe parking. Perfect for a night stay or a full week vacation with family. Sits on 1.5 acres perfect for family reunions, girls day, guys day, etc.
Unique 1870’s farm house with all the modern amenities and comforts without sacrificing decor. Located on Lake Vandalia with easy flat access to water and beach. Sits on 1.5 acres so there is plenty of room to stretch your legs, throw shoes, or for the active bunch....nice flat areas to set up for badminton or volleyball. Covered patio for those rainy days perfect for outside dinning or just catching up with friends and family. One full and one half bathrooms accessed from patio for the convenience of not walking all the way back to house.
Cottage is centrally located on Lake Vandalia and very accessible for those not familiar with area. Although you will have your own private beach there is a free public beach right across the cove and a convenient mart next to camp grounds within kayaking distance. We have only one neighbor on the lake who are approximately 100 yards away with a shared driveway so there is an adequate amount of privacy. Other conveniently close off location amenities include a super Walmart within 2 miles, an 18 hole golf course within 10 miles on the same road cottage is addressed, and a very secluded “hidden gem” of a winery within 8 miles just off the same road. Lake Vandalia is 660 acres which is more than ample for any water sports and on most days during the week and most weekends it’s as if it’s your own private lake.
  • Easily a 10/10! The Lake House was super quaint, homey, has the kitchen of your dreams, and is on a private/beautiful lake and plot of land. It was a little cold due to it being an old home and 6 degrees outside, but that's about the only negative I could possibly find if I absolutely had to. I would gladly stay again, and recommend it to friends/family every time. Thanks for the last minute booking, super grateful!

    Michael2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful setting! The older house is comfortable, cozy and tastefully decorated with antiques. The sunroom/bar area is a perfect space for entertaining - and the perfect place for enjoying morning coffee while looking out across the lake. There were plenty of linens, towels, blankets and throws, and the house was well stocked with dishes, cooking utensils and spices/condiments. We did a lot of cooking in the commercial kitchen and my son loved making smashburgers on the griddle. We can't wait to return in the summer!

  • Cool old house. Unique layout with tons of character. Waterfront space is beautiful and well kept. Owners were responsive and easy to work with. We’d rent again if in the area. Would love to be here in the summer.

You’ll love my place because of the comfy beds, the kitchen, the beautiful wooded setting, the pond, swimming pool, and the views. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and families (with kids). Here is a fabulous video made by a guest! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjbGvuCMkXg
Feed our horses, take a swim in our pool, relax in Adirondack chairs next to the lake, enjoy a fire and watch the stars! This is a walkout basement with projector media room.
Very private house with only one neighbor.
  • This place is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Tom and JoAnn went above and beyond with extra touches and hospitality. We spent the evening by the fire which is the perfect place to connect with friends, family, and nature.

    Nina2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • JoAnn and her husband were great hosts. The property was beautiful and the guest house was very comfortable and homey.

    Steven2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • JoAnn’s place is a lovely quiet out-of-the-way place. If you have reason to be near Breese, IL, her two bedroom Airbnb is great for couples or families. If you visit in the summer time, the pool would be nice or a walk down the lane.

    Karen2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • This place was exactly what I expected! Beautiful private place to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. Between the pond, pool, and horse/donkey there is plenty to do! Very happy to have the privilege to share this home ... definitely would stay here again.

When we found Wilcott Pines nearly 4 years ago, we fell in love at first site. You will, too! Covering nearly 3 acres on private Governor Bond Lake, the 3,800 sq. ft., two-story house is a log cabin built in the early '80's, completely modernized to comfortably host up to 15 people. Our listing price is for 4 guests. It's $25 per guest, per night additional fee, reflected in your final booking. We are 100% house-trained, well-behaved pet friendly. Please let us know if you have more than 2.
Because Wilcott Pines covers so much area, there a several spaces where small groups can meet and be separate from one another. There is also enough wide open space in the house for a very large group to be together. This makes Wilcott Pines perfect of any kind of large meeting, executive retreat, writers group, family reunion, etc. And caterers love our kitchens! A full kitchen, including refrigerator, stove, oven, and sink on the lower level allows food preparation to be done away from the main living area. Please contact us for special, one-day meeting prices. The property is near the tip of a peninsula with a full 180 degree view of the lake, we are witness to a wide variety of avian wildlife. Depending on the time of year, we have pelicans, geese, ducks, cormorants, herons, egrets, eagles and many song birds. The lake is stocked full of fish and at any given time you will see several fishing boats on the lake.
Our neighborhood is 100% residential and very peaceful and quiet. We are located on a peninsula cul de sac with only 4 other houses nearby. We have lots of wooded area, as well as wide open spaces for soccer, croquet or star gazing. The Town of Greenville is a small, Christian college town with little to no night life. It's a one-grocery-store kind of place with very friendly people who all wave when you drive by. Third Street Antiques is the best place around to find hidden treasures. Say hello to the owner Annette when you visit! And Kahuna's has the best burgers!
  • This was an amazing place and was perfect for our couples get-a-way. I would recommend this house to anyone!

    Cary2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great location to host a staff retreat! Scott and Heidi were a great team. Scott's movie collection is an added bonus. The sauna was especially a great experience.

    Michael2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • We were blessed on a cold winters day with a comfy couch, fantastic kitchen, fire in the fireplace and the most amazing view of the lake and autumn scenery. Scott's place was the perfect place to hold our retreat.

    Carlene2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Wilcott Pines Cabin exceeded our expectations!!! "Family-time" at its BEST! Amenities, kitchen, open-concept living area, ambiance, fireplace, sauna, lake-front fun, room for the entire family, indoor/outdoor dining options, Holiday Magic! The cabin is located in a quiet area, which we appreciated very much. There are several small communities nearby for shopping and antiquing. St. Louis is about an hours drive. Communication with the host and co-host was always prompt and extremely helpful. This is a special property that our family hopes to visit in the future. Highly recommend!!! Thank you Scott and Heidi. ; ) ~Rich & Christine

  • Scott's house was fantastic! It exceeded our expectations. We were there on an Elders Retreat for our church. It fit our needs perfectly. The 5 of us were able to each have our own comfortable room and the living spaces were perfect for meeting together and enjoying our time together. The kitchen was impressively stocked as well! Highly recommend.

  • Super cozy fall weekend at Wilcott Pines. The setting is perfect for the fall colors. Greenville is such a cute and friendly town. Check out the Chamber of Commerce site to see if there are any activities going on. With the chillier weather bring some slippers. The lakehouse has this beautiful tile but it gets a little chilly on the toes. The wood burning fireplace was perfect. They provide the wood, no shortage there, so all you have to do is cuddle up by the fire. They have a sauna as well, which we have not actually used yet, but will next time for sure! Internet connection can be tricky here but we have found the computer stored movies they have work great, there is like 2,500 of them, and something for eveeyone. We always have our laptop that we can connect with their HDMI and tether off our phones if we have issues with Netflix or Prime Video...that works really well for us. Great opportunity to unplug and unwind. We love it here!!!

Laid back owner in a small quiet safe town. Guaranteed a peaceful nights rest.
The original bank vault from 1891 is on display in this room which has 2 queen beds, a table and 4 chairs, wifi, and HD flat screen satellite TV.
My motel is located among the center of old downtown Aviston. Post office on 1 corner. The 2nd bank, which is now a civil engineering firm, located on the other. My motel, which was the original bank, at one corner. And an empty lot which was the meat market when I was a child where I would purchase a soda pop after school. Always a Ski which is the local soft drink of choice and you should try one while you are in the area.
  • Great place to stay friendly small town

    Dan2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place. I've stayed at places many times the price that weren't as nice. The old vault door is a really cool extra. Amiable and accomadating host.

This Cottage is our Honeymoon Suite complete with full kitchen, king size bed, spa room Jacuzzi tub, outdoor shower, BBQ grill, fire pit and private courtyard. It has a great relaxing view of the lake and surrounding area from the bedroom and porch. The Winery at Shale Lake is also located a short walk away! Guests to all Shale Lake cabins and cottages are subject to a 3% Local Hotel Tax due upon check-in and separate from any taxes paid or collected by Airbnb.
This Cottage is our Honeymoon Suite complete with full kitchen, king size master bed, outdoor shower, BBQ grill, fire pit and very private courtyard with a multi-level deck. The Spa Room with 2 person Jacuzzi tub also has an electric fireplace, TV, vanity and reading nook. The view of the lake and surrounding area from the bedroom and porch is romantic and relaxing.
Shale Lake is located on 211 acres of the former Mt. Olive and Staunton Coal Company Mine #2 and The Winery at Shale Lake is the only "Coal Winery" in Illinois (one of only 2 in the US). The property was reclaimed in the 1980's. Susan and David Wesa purchased the property in 2006 and renamed it Shale Lake after the 46 acres of shale hills leftover from the mine. In 2007 they planted the vineyard and opened the horse boarding stables. The Winery (with tasting room) was opened in 2010 and produces 2,000 gallons of wine annually. HIKING TRAILS There are 212 acres available for exploring. The entire perimeter has some form of fencing (some chain link and some barbed wire). There are a few interior chain link fences as well. You are welcomed to explore the entire property except for the outbuildings. There are a few wooded trails that are maintained annually. HILLTOP VIEW There are horses in the pastures in front and behind the cottages. VINEYARD The vineyard is approximately 14 acres planted in 2007. There are 74 600' rows. We have 6 varieties of grapes: Norton, Chambourcin, Marechal Foch, Vignole, Cayuga and Traminette. LAKE Our 24 acre lake was reclaimed in the 80’s. The lake averages 5’ deep - if you fall in, STAND UP! Cabin guests may fish, CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY. We have crappie, bass, catfish and bluegill. FOWL, FUR and SHELL We host a lot more than humans at Shale Lake! You may see a Grey Heron soaring in for the night and occasionally a white one, too. We have Swans and White Northern Pelicans stopping almost every year. We also have at least 3 Barred Owls, a pair of Red Tail Hawks and a mating pair of Bald Eagles that winter in the north woods. We have more than our share of turtles including some snapping turtles the size of a tire! If you find one hibernating in a creek, best to leave it alone! WOODED BOUNTY We have some unusual plants and trees. The old coal mine employed as many as 700 people. There were buildings in and around the woods. The buildings are gone but you will find cactus thriving in the shale dust and a huge bed of iris blooms (planted by office ladies). We have a yucca grove, pecan & walnut trees, plus apple and persimmon trees. The old metal stove was not grown but rather thrown here by locals using the property as a dump. There is a lot of really cool, really old stuff. Please feel free to explore and take any trash…ehh..treasures with you!

Located directly across the street from the Vandalia Statehouse! Tours are available Tuesday through Saturday. The 3rd floor gives an amazing view of downtown Vandalia. Fine dining just a few steps away at Blind Society. There will also be a distillery opening up there soon.
This is a loft apartment. There are no walls between the living area and the "bedroom." I do provide a floor mattress and a couch for extra places to sleep.
Vandalia Statehouse (where Abe Lincoln worked as a state legislator). 5+ bars within a 2 block radius.
  • A very clean and comfortable space right across the street from the Old State Capitol in a walkable neighborhood. Matt was really easy to get ahold of the one time I locked myself out of the space. There were locally owned bars and restaurants close by. i had a really great stay.

Secluded, Beautiful lake home, sandy beach right out back. Multiple levels of decking, multiple levels of interior living, yet you can find quiet nooks to be alone or have conversations. Remote, yet close enough to town to go in for a movie or dinner. Something different, than you'll find in most rural areas. The current arrangement includes actual beds to sleep 28 guests. Photos reflect the current furniture arrangements. We have indoor seating for 20+ (12-16 alone at the farmhouse table) and patio seating outside for 40. We have multiple sofas, love seats and chairs to accommodate guests throughout the home. Join us as we renovate this great space on 2+acres. Game room and bathroom on the walk-out basement level just completed! Come back regularly to check our progress. SPECIAL NOTE / CAUTION This is a city reservoir. That means after treatment people drink this water. Please keep that in mind when using the lake and surrounding areas. The watershed for this lake is about 10 square miles, lake levels vary. In parts of the spring and fall rainy seasons, there may be little or no sandy beach area as the lake level may rise by up to 5' due to heavy rains. The lake will still be accessible, but no wake may be allowed. Host will alert you if they know of adverse conditions. Note because the lake has a static spillway it generally returns to normal pool within a day or two after the rain abates. Memorial Day thru Labor Day The beach will be cleaned of debris at the beginning of your stay. Small amounts of debris may accumulate daily, there is a rake on site for easy clean up.
Only part time homes in this 3 home 5 lot subdivision. Farm to the North. Lake to the south. Quiet and secluded. Anybody coming past the Nest is coming to our home. The lake traffic is light except for peak holiday weekends. Even then we don't generally see more than 5 or 6 power boats at a time.
  • Our family of 11, including 5 kids under the age of 7 loved our stay at The Nest. We had plenty of room for every family to have their own space but yet be together. It was so awesome that they had crib, pack n play, bouncer, and so much more available for a baby. The Nest Team was very helpful and they had awesome amenities available. We celebrated Christmas while there and they had a nice tree set up for us to use. The outdoor space is amazing, and with the warmer temperatures we were able to let the kids play some . They loved the slide! Extra touches like games, blankets to cuddle on the couch with, plenty of coffee, laundry detergent, and more made it feel like home. The kitchen is well stocked. My mom brought baking dishes from home wanting to fix us our normal Christmas breakfast but they werent needed because the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed . We drove to St Louis twice and it was only about an hour to the zoo and the arch . I really hope we can come back in the future!! Thank you Nest Team for a great new Christmas tradition.

    Erin2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • We love it here. We are reoccurring guests at The Nest and it keeps getting better. Susan continues to take feedback to heart and make small changes to best meet the needs of the guests. Highly recommend for large groups.

    Sarah2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! That was the word I uttered multiple times upon arriving at The Nest to host 10 women for a Wholehearted Women retreat. The Nest team was incredible, from answering many questions and granting us a tour before booking, to being in close contact during our stay. The house was perfect for our fall retreat, providing enough space for us to gather in the living room area during sessions and then transition to the kitchen for communal cooking and meals. We even held a yoga class in the basement! There were plenty of bathrooms and spaces for people to spread out when they needed some space. Everything was wonderful about this property, and that doesn't even include the amazing setting/view. Wow!

    Callie2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's "The Nest" Property was simply amazing. We booked for a co-ed wedding party house as a retreat in between the wedding and rehearsals as a place everyone could relax and mingle. It was the absolute best for that. It had everything we ever needed and more!! Would recommend to anyone with a good group looking for the most amazing lakehouse retreat! A+ property, location, owners, and caretakers!!

    Matt2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The Nest Is a spectacular property that accommodated our ladies retreat beautifully! Susan and her crew exceeded our expectations with regard to communication and responsiveness. The house is tastefully decorated and lacked nothing. The outside space worked well for our evening fires, as well as eating and relaxing on the decks. We hope to return next year.

    Sharon2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great large house for a big group. The outdoor space is great with lots of decks and seating and easy access to the lake. The lake was beautiful and not at all crowded when we were there. Very comfortable beds and lots of space for our group of 20. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking for a large group. We would for sure stay here again!

    Natalie2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Nest is very comfortable, modern, spacious, well equipped, clean, family friendly, well located by the Lake. We loved the place. The Host is very comunicative, kind and helpfull. We highly recomend the Nest.

    Katarzyna2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • This property was amazing. We had a group of 16 adults and everyone had space and we didn’t feel packed together at all. The kitchen was incredible and fully stocked with the items we need to prepare our big meals. The wrap around deck and all the chairs and tables were perfect for hanging out and having meals outside when it was nice. They had a nice TV set up so we could watch our baseball games and play video games when it rained. The outside was set up perfectly with lights, fans, chairs, hammocks and fire pit. The beach area was no hassle and perfect to get in and out of. And when we had questions about things we needed they were quick to respond with helpful information. The lake was peaceful and not busy or old at all. My wife and I were able to paddle board to the other side of the lake without having to worry about boats often. And there are no neighbors close so it was quite and relaxing on the property as well. We will definitely be staying here again when our group decides to head back to the lake. Thanks again for everything!

Laid back owner in a small quiet safe town. Guaranteed a peaceful nights rest.
This room has the original 1891 furniture store 6'x6' display window, 2 queen beds, a table and 4 chairs, wifi, and HD flat screen satellite TV.

    David2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • From the moment Brett greeted us at the door to when we said our goodbyes we knew we were in a very special home. Brett showed around his home and shared his ideas for dining in the area. We were very happy to be able to walk to DeMaggio's, a quaint Italian restaurant, an easy seven minute walk from his home. He also showed us the bookstore and offered us to each pick out a used book to take with us. There were so many books to choose from. We also bought a card game to play with our grandchildren. When we checked out our room we found some delicious chocolates waiting for us. There was also a mini fridge, on our floor, stocked with soda and water for our use. Our room was very large and comfortable with a private bath. The shower was a sitdown shower in the jetted bathtub. It was so relaxing soaking in the tub, first. The towels were so soft and fluffy!! When we returned from dinner Mindy, who was now home from work, had prepared a snack of wine and cheese and crackers for us to share with them. We really enjoyed our conversation with them and we loved their story. It was a very nice evening. Otis and Gus Gus, their two dogs, are very sweet and love to be included. Where do I begin with the breakfast?? It was amazing and the presentation was very elegant. Mindy had prepared a delicious apple French toast casserole served with homemade caramel sauce, maple syrup and freshly whipped cream. There was also scrambled eggs, bacon sausage, fruit, orange juice and coffee. It was scrumptious. As we were leaving Mindy gave us a small package of homemade cookies for our continued road trip. What a nice gesture. If we are ever passing through the area we will be sure to check for availability to stay with Brett and Mindy again.

The balcony was wonderful to have coffee on in the morning. The bathroom had a hot shower/tub with a heated fan and plush towels. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and this loft was perfect. We visited two wineries near by, Copper Dock and Hidden Lake, both had great food and beautiful atmospheres. We ran into one hiccup with our room and Carole had it taken care of in minutes! Her family was incredibly nice and her loft exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend as a romantic getaway!

  • Co-hosts Carole and Christine have created a beautiful and comfortable space that would be perfect for a private retreat, romantic getaway, or any other reason one might find to visit. It was both sparkling clean and welcoming. Their checking procedures were wonderful, the grounds were calm and beautiful, and their directions were perfect. I highly recommend this property. I've traveled all over the country staying in hotels, b&bs and AirBNBs, and the quality and value for dollar of this property is exceptional. Thanks for a great stay, ladies!

  • We had 14 people over Thanksgiving and we never seemed crowded. The kitchen was extremely well equipped, everything was very clean and perfectly as described. The house is stocked with lots of video and board games. I would love to come back in better weather and take advantage of the kayaks and great outdoor spaces. I would recommend for any large gathering.

  • It was an awesome place for families get together! Clean and comfortable with lot of recreational stuff for Adults and kids! We really enjoyed this place..🙂

  • This house and location are everything that it looks like and more. Our large family had a great time. There is plenty of room, abundant supplies, and thoughtful touches. One challenge we have run into in the past is seating for everyone. This was not a problem at this house. There are several places where large groups can gather and visit both inside and out. The hosts were attentive and welcoming, the beds were comfortable, and lake was beautiful; what else do you need!

    John2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • These hosts are the most generous, most accommodating, and most thoughtful hosts of any Airbnb we've booked through. Communication is near-instantaneous, thorough, and guest-focused. From rapid responses to any questions we had about the property or our stay, to week/day-of helpful messages to provide an up-to-date status of the house, personalized directions straight to the driveway, to answer any question or address any need, it's clear these hosts care deeply about providing their guests with the best experience possible. We were especially surprised to receive near-instant responses to questions we had *DURING* our stay! All of the little touches these hosts put into their guest's stay add up to offer a truly luxurious experience. From a USB charging station in every room, coffeemakers in bedrooms, plentiful towels and linens placed in intuitive locations, shampoo/conditioner/bodysoap conveniently placed in easy-to-use dispensers, to the multitude of activities available (board games/tables, Pool, Mini Shuffleboard, Ping-Pong, Guitar Hero, Foosball, etc) - we found that any need we would have or amenity we would want had already been anticipated and thoughtfully offered to the guests. We had an indescribably amazing weekend at The Aerie - one we couldn't have managed without the loving attention these hosts pay to their guests and their property. We're very thankful for having had the experience to stay at The Aerie, and we cannot wait to come back!

  • The Aerie was an amazing location for our large group retreat.

    Julie2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was great. They went above and beyond to make us happy and comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place to a large group. There is plenty of room to socialize and to entertain.

    Abbie2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • A stay at the Aerie will be everything you need for a relaxing get away. There are plenty of comforts, many amenities, and a beautiful view from the house. There are many things to do both inside and out. A great place to just relax with friends/family.

    Paul & Lori2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Aerie was fantastic and better than expected. Plenty of room. No shortage of anything really (towels, dishes, silverware, entertainment, etc.). Being right by the lake was awesome. Overall all of my friends and I had a super fun weekend. FYI the WiFi is pretty slow and doesn't reach many areas of the house.

  • Absolutely loved staying here!!! Nice place with gorgeous views!!! The owners are as nice as can be & answered any questions we had. The relaxation was amazing & the fishing was great, too! Cute little town, too! We will definitely be coming back!

  • Beyond amazing!! The best service, amazing house, amazing location. Came out of there way both days of our trip and took us on a boat ride with our kiddos.

  • Jeanette and husband were so amazing!!! The place is a little hard to find but Jeanette made sure we got there. The house had everything you could need from toiletries to condiments to everything you need to cook a full meal. The property is on a corner lot and in a cove so lots of privacy. They had a pile of wood waiting for a huge campfire. The fishing was amazing!!! I haven't fished in probably 30 years and was reluctant to even try again. We spent most of out time fishing right of the dock which is just a few steps down from the house. I had a bite within 5 mins of having my line in. We caught catfish, bluegill, bass, sheephead and a hybrid!!! The hosts even came by and gave us a ride on their boat! We are counting down the days until we can go back!!!

Enjoy your stay in your very own farmhouse. Nestled in rolling hills, with views of the flowing creek and fields. Just 6 miles East of Hillsboro, IL and 45 minutes from Springfield, IL Enjoy hiking, fishing, golf, boating and relaxing on the porch. The farmhouse has one bedroom with a queen bed and comfortable sofa sleeper (double) in the living room. There is also a double bed/futon in the summer kitchen to use if desired. The second farmhouse shown in photos is NOT available as of July'16
We are a unique farmhouse, situated on 236 acres of complete privacy You have the use of your own farmhouse. Situated in the country within 6 miles of Hillsboro IL Plenty of restaurants, shops, and museums close by.
We love the quiet, peaceful nature sounds. Our neighbors are too far to see, but close enough to help out if needed. The stars are so bright in the country, and deer, turkey and pheasants are always seen.
  • If you read all the reviews before this one, you would see a trend. Every previous visitor noted how precious, relaxing, and hospitality this home was. The house is filled with thoughtful touches and amenities. It is placed in the middle of the country where it seems only one car passed by the entire time we were there. The view from the front porch swing or the view from the backyard hot tub allows anyone to feel a sense of relaxation and peacefulness. Not to mention the fridge had bread, eggs, bacon, and a complimentary bottle of wine. Inside the bathroom area, there is a claw-foot tub, big enough for two if you are looking for something quietly romantic. My husband and I did not feel the need to venture out too many times over the long weekend we were there, but the owners- super nice people by the way- gave us several suggestions of where to go if we wanted to cruise the area. I could go on and on about the place, but I'll stop here. Oh, and p.s., the homemade cookies that were left for us were nothing short of amazing!!!

    Katie2019-07-08T00:00:00Z
  • John & Vicki's place was the perfect place for the rest and relaxation we needed. The house was spotless and charming. The bed is SUPER comfy! The house is tastefully decorated and Vicki's beautiful art hangs on some of the walls. They were so thoughtful to leave farm fresh eggs, sausage, bread, butter etc... for us to enjoy for our breakfast. John and Vicki also brought over a bottle of their fabulous wine for us to enjoy as well. The house is located in the country and is very private and secluded - just what we were looking for to unplug from the hectic pace of the daily grind (however, there is wi-fi for those who wish to remain connected). We spent one day at a lake nearby - which was wonderful! We rented a boat, fished and swam. The next night we went to the drive-in movie - such a treat! In the evenings, we sat on the front porch in the rocking chairs catching up and reconnecting with each other as we were serenaded by the tree-toads and the wind dancing through the trees. It was the perfect weekend!! We will definitely be back!!

  • Amazing stay. Really relaxing with thoughtful hosts. Everyone in town is nice and helpful. Thanks again for having us.

  • We stayed at Pheasant Valley Farms on our way down to southern Illinois to view the total solar eclipse. John was a wonderful host. He made us feel very at home. He gave us a tour of his farm/vineyard and even brought us watermelon for a treat in the evening. Thanks, John. We loved the farmhouse!

    Cheryl2017-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Pheasant Valley Farms for a day to relax and enjoy some time together. We absolutely loved our experience. The land surrounding the home is absolutely beautiful which made for a peaceful stay. We spent most of our time sitting on the front patio porch swing taking in our beautiful surroundings. John and Vicky were incredibly accommodating and gracious. We were greeted with a bottle of wine (made from grapes on their farm!) and they were kind enough to have breakfast items ready for us for the morning. We even got to enjoy a tour around the farm on John's awesome toy, a seemingly high powered golf cart, for lack of a better name :) We loved our stay and will definitely be back!

    Kristen2017-06-11T00:00:00Z
  • It is definitely off the beaten path, but is a great cottage. We were passing through on our road trip home, but hope to come back sometime and really enjoy what the farm has to offer.

    Crystal2017-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We decided we needed a nice quiet weekend away, and booked this only a couple days in advance. We have a very enjoyable, restful weekend in the country on John and Vicki's farm / wildlife reserve. The house was spotless and very much as described. This is rural central Illinois at its best. John took the time to show us around the property, made excellent winery and restaurant recommendations, and went to great lengths to assure our comfort. He even left bacon, eggs, OJ, milk, and stuff for us to make breakfast. Bottom line, we were very happy we stayed, and hope to do so again sometime.

    Michael & Jeri2016-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • John and Vicki were so welcoming, even during a pretty heavy down pour! The farmhouse was exactly what we were looking for in an escape--a quiet and semi-remote place with a lot to do outside. The pictures are accurate, as are the descriptions provided. Games, puzzles, and dvd/vcr are available for use--if you have young kids bring dvds for them, the selection available is great (Dirty Dancing!) but not targeted for littles. All in all, it was a lovely stay, even if we had to cut it short due to weather (constant rain) induced cabin fever. We're definitely taking John up on the IOU to come back and tour the wineries in the future! Thanks for letting me take home all the delicious cookies...they were fantastic!

Shale Lake is located on 211 acres of the former Mt. Olive and Staunton Coal Company Mine #2 and The Winery at Shale Lake is the only "Coal Winery" in Illinois (one of only 2 in the US). In 2007 they planted the vineyard and opened the horse boarding stables. The Winery (with tasting room) was opened in 2010 and produces 2,000 gallons of wine annually. • Shake Lake cabins and the winery were gorgeous. The cabin was small and cozy and very clean. The only downside is lots of bugs swarming to the door at night because of the light outside the door in the otherwise pitch black of nature. That lead to a scary first entry but nothing too horrible. The winery has amazing food and drinks. I’ll be back for sure.

  • I was looking for a place to have a relaxing weekend and this place was just perfect. I loved every part of it -- the tiny house was more than I expected ... the space was clean, the views were beautiful and everything I needed was in the house. In addition, the grounds were beautiful -- horses, trails, lake (I used the canoe!) and the winery. Thank you for such a relaxing get away!

    Mary2018-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay! The environment is peaceful and the cottage is quaint and relaxing! David was very helpful throughout our stay. Loved that dishes pots and pans were provided as we made brownies from scratch. Loved waking up to see the horses in the pasture and the sun rising above the lake.

    Tony2016-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • The property was easy to find. The owners were sweet and easy to communicate with. The cabin was cute yet spacious. The property also doubling as a winery was a bonus. The wine was good. They have a dog on the property which made my trip.

  • Jill’s place was the perfect spot for our girls weekend. We had the whole place to ourselves, it was sparkling clean, and so much was provided for you in the house to make you feel right at home. It was in a great location and never more than 30min away from beach, wineries, grocery store, or whatever we needed/wanted to do. It was so easy to communicate with Jill and she provided lots of local recommendations for us as well :-)

    Winnie2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • The space is so much greater than pictures will tell. It was roomy and very well equipped. Comfortable beds and games to play. Sunrises are stunning. We couldn't have asked for a better home base as we were there to be "command central" for our daughter's wedding. Even as that event made us a little scatterbrained (losing keys, locking ourselves out) we were treated with perfect kindness and understanding, and responsiveness was immediate. We also took a break to spend a day in St Louis, only an hour or so away.

    Jill2019-06-30T00:00:00Z

  • The photos in the cottage listing really do not do the place justice. They are charming, clean, really unique, and the property's setting is spectacularly relaxing. There was a constant lovely breeze on the front porch and walking around the lake and trails was a great way to spend the afternoon.

  • It was such a nice place! Very peaceful!!!

    Colleen2018-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a relaxing, romantic, and fun getaway at Cottage #12! The scenery is beautiful with horses, sunsets, and view of a lake. You really feel like you're out in the middle of no where! We had plenty of privacy, checking in was a breeze, and the owners were easy to contact when we needed a last minute late check out. We enjoyed sitting out on the shaded patio with drinks and games. The space inside is very clean and had all the amenities we needed for a short trip. Comfy bed, good a/c, three TVs with local channels, and a place to sit inside. Just FYI, we never found the DVD player and the loft area was a lot warmer than the downstairs bedroom. No big deal We wish we would've had more time to explore the winery and hiking trails!

  • David was amazing. The cottage we stayed in was perfect for our weekend getaway! It was our anniversary weekend and we needed a quaint place off the path, but close enough to home to get a way to. David's property was PERFECT!!! I wish we could have stayed longer. Loved the winery, he makes a very good Seventh Heaven, a perfect blend for my husbands dry palette vs my sweet one. Loved the trails we were able to walk on to relax and have fun with my husband. LOVED the horses in our front yard first thing in the morning with a beautiful sunrise!!! We will definitely be back at least 2 more times. I REALLY want to stay in the Honeymoon cottage. As well, we want to return with our kids and stay in The Manor! Thanks David for everything. You and your wife are amazing hosts!!! The Fowlers

  • This place was nice, clean and quiet. Diane and her husband were very hospitable. Also, there was a little park and running trail just a quarter mile from their house which my children and I enjoyed. Overall great stay and I’d recommend!

  • Diane’s home is very close to the way of historic Route 66 Road, she and her husband are very nice and friendly for us, hearty breakfast, clean rooms! We stayed at her home very comfortable.

  • Diane is wonderful and the home is beautiful. Incredibly welcoming and hospital folks who know what they are doing. Everything was clean and there was a homemade guide book for the area. Convenient location and great breakfast! Would recommend this spot to anyone and will definitely stay again if passing through!

  • We had a great stay. Diane snd her husband are very welcoming and nice. We felt safe. Everything as presented. Very lovable cat too:) And 2 cute dogs.

    Lisa2019-05-06T00:00:00Z
  • Diane makes a wonderful and full breakfast! This is one of the highlights as that is not something that is often found, especially a hot breakfast! It's a great way to start the day! The beds were really comfortable too!

    Deborah2019-04-23T00:00:00Z
  • These people are amazing and such warm and welcoming hosts. Cute cat, beautiful & lush rural landscape. Perfect for a casual and quiet getaway.

    Miranda2018-10-08T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful find! Diane and Don could not have been more kind and accommodating to my family. We requested vegan options for breakfast, and they made fresh, amazing food for us. They were flexible with our timing, the house was impeccable, and their kindness made us feel so very welcome. I highly recommend that you get to know Don and Diane by staying in their lovely home whenever you are in their area. Their furry family members were just the right balance of polite and hospitable, as well. They go above and beyond to treat their guests right.

  • Bill and his wife are fantastic hosts. The lodge was perfect for what I needed. Clean, unique location, and welcoming people are what you can expect. Bill was also very understanding when family matters had to cut my stay short. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the Vandalia area there is nowhere better!

    Shawn2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking for a remote location to stay with the feeling as though you're at a home, this is the place to go! I stayed at this location 4 nights a week for 3 weeks due to a clinical rotation and the hospitality was amazing. It is safe, comfortable and peaceful. The cell service for version is finicky, however the Wifi inside worked just fine. Bill and his family made my stay away from home very comfortable.

    Erin2019-08-29T00:00:00Z

We call this cottage our "ladies night out" unit but really it works well for any medium sized group. The cottage is set up for 2-7 people with a king sized bed in the Master Bedroom and four separate beds in the large loft. The short ceilings in the loft are 4' in the front and 3' in the back. The living area has a large dining table and a full sized kitchen. The bath has a hallway dressing area. The porch has 2 swings and a breakfast bar overlooking the view of the lake.
Cabin guests may fish.
Shale Lake is located on 200 acres of the former Mt. Olive and Staunton Coal Company Mine #2. The Winery at Shale Lake is the only "Coal Winery" in Illinois (one of only 2 in the US). • David, our host, was kind enough to change our reservation to one that offered a bit more living room space. The cabin we had originally reserved was more of a family cabin, offering more sleeping space. Since it was just my husband & I for Valentines Day, I had seen that Cabin 14 was available and seemed to have more living room space. It ended up being perfect for the two of us. It was very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay in the cabin, at the winery & also did a little antique shopping in the area. Would definitely like to return when the weather warms up & experience more of the outdoors there. Would highly recommend for a weekend getaway!

  • Bill was a great host. He was there to greet us when we arrived and showed me around. The private room was really comfortable, great bed, and I appreciated the bedside lamp. He and Wendy welcomed my dog, and there was plenty of space outside for walking. The common kitchen/living room area was very welcoming. There are several full baths available that are shared, but very clean. I think it is such a great idea to let out the rooms in the lodge as an AirBNB!

    Christina2018-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • Comfortable hunting camp/lodge bed was all I needed for the night and it was perfect for the price. All I needed was use of a bed, bathroom, coffee maker and place to eat take out dinner before turning in for the night. Met all expectations as well as leaving a movie on in the main room with a fireplace running. I ran into some bad weather getting there and bill stayed up 2 hours passed my arrival time to make sure I made it. Would recommend as a good overnight value stay. Don’t use Apple maps though(use google or directions on webpage).....Apple maps put me on a road that wasn’t there twice. Jw

Laid back owner in a small quiet safe town. Guaranteed a peaceful nights rest.
This room has the original 1891 furniture store 6'x6' display window, 2 queen beds, a table and 4 chairs, wifi, and HD flat screen satellite TV.
  • Do it you will enjoy this place, quaint little hangout for the night.
