Where you’ll be

Vieux-Habitants, Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe

Halfway between Bouillante and Basse-Terre, this village is one of the oldest in Guadeloupe from 1636, the small region called Fond des Habitants welcomed the first "engaged" of the Company of the Isles of America; at the end of the contract these former semi-slaves who regained freedom aspired to forget their past by settling away from the sites where the Company was domiciled (Vieux-Fort & Basse-Terre), They were the first settlers to be called "inhabitants".

The Church of Saint-Joseph,a massive and sober buttressed building, dates from the end of the 17th century and belongs to the first generation of religious buildings built hard in Guadeloupe, succeeding the pioneer constructions in forks and reeds; the facade has a certain nobility with its apparatus of gray stones and its portal worked, carved by craftsmen from Limousin. Inside the nave is covered with an inverted hull framework assembled by marine carpenters.

It was initially an agricultural commune renowned for its coffee, vanilla and more generally the Creole gardens. In Zabitan Creole, its inhabitants are called Habissois(es). The town is crossed from side to side by the Grande Rivière des Vieux-Habitants and the Rivière de Beaugendre which flow into the Caribbean Sea north of the city.
