Tucked in this enchanted resort near Sequoia’s towering giants, Lake Elowin echoes the wild soul of the 1970s where Hollywood dreamers once mingled with nature lovers. Hazy nights, vinyl spinning, legendary parties under the stars. Surrounded by trees, water, and wildlife, this historic cabin offers a true escape into nature. With original décor and vintage energy, it invites you to relive the era raw, free, and full of magic. A timeless retreat where the free-spirit of the past still lingers.

The space
A TIMELESS ESCAPE

Surrounded by lush vegetation, a private lake, and sounds of the river, and roaming wildlife. See deer at dawn, frogs at dusk, even the occasional bear. Lake Elowin is a true immersion into nature’s rhythm. The resort’s original canoe still rests by the shore, and a weathered ping pong table invites friendly games, echoing the laughter of decades past.

This is a place where time drifts, where the wild spirit of a bold, barefoot era lingers in every detail. Step inside, press play, and feel the soul of the seventies; raw, rich, and reverently alive!

THE STORY OF THE RESORT
Nestled in the Sierra foothills just minutes from Sequoia National Park, Lake Elowin is a hidden piece of California history. Once a natural watering hole along a stagecoach route, the land was transformed in the 1920s by Herb Wilson, a former Sequoia park worker. He hand-built the first cabins, shaped the lake, and named the resort “Elowin”—meaning enchanted land beyond the setting sun.

By the 1950s, it became a peaceful retreat for families and adventurers. Then, in 1977, charismatic Armenian-American Milton Melkonian took the reins and gave Lake Elowin a vibrant new energy. The resort became a haven for artists, musicians, travelers, and Hollywood actors. Days were slow and sun-soaked, while nights brought music, laughter, and uninhibited joy. Echoes of the hippie era with a dash of glamor and mischief.

In 1981, Lake Elowin found itself in the headlines, caught up in a moment of controversy that added yet another layer to its rich and colorful story. Far from diminishing its spirit, the chapter only fueled the intrigue. Marking a time when boundaries blurred and the line between retreat and rebellion quietly vanished.

Today, now called Sequoia Cabin Resort, the property is being carefully revived. 8 cabins set across four acres of forest and lakeside are being restored with love and respect for their past. Original details are preserved or reimagined, letting the soul of the place breathe again. This isn’t a reinvention, it’s a quiet return to beauty, simplicity, and something you feel deep in your spirit the moment you arrive.

LOCATION
Lake Elowin, now known as Sequoia Cabin Resort, offers the perfect balance of seclusion and convenience. Surrounded by nature, the property feels worlds away. Tucked among trees, beside a private lake, and just steps from scenic hiking trails right across the road. Yet you’re only a few minutes from the heart of downtown Three Rivers, where you’ll find local restaurants, a brewery, coffee shops, and charming stores.

The resort is conveniently located just 5 minutes from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park, making it an ideal base for adventure. Within a 45-minute drive, you can stand beneath the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree on Earth. Whether you’re seeking wilderness or a latte, you’ll find both within easy reach.

ON THE PROPERTY
The resort sits on over four acres of park-like grounds, blending open space with natural wilderness. It’s a peaceful, rustic setting designed for exploring, relaxing, and reconnecting with nature. The private lake is perfect for swimming, canoeing, or simply lounging in a chair by the water. There’s a small island ideal for picnics, cobblestone BBQ pits for casual cookouts, and shaded hangout areas scattered throughout.

Just a five-minute walk from your cabin, the river offers a quiet spot for fishing or wading—though caution is advised during snowmelt season, when water levels can rise quickly.

Hiking trails start just across the road, and wildlife is part of the charm here. Expect to encounter deer, ducks, frogs, lizards, squirrels, and the occasional bear, bobcat, or snake. The terrain is rugged and uneven in places, so take your time and watch your step.

Whether you’re paddling across the lake, grilling beneath the trees, or reading a book on the shore, Sequoia Cabin Resort offers a park-like retreat where nature sets the pace.

Wildlife You May Encounter

Our property is surrounded by nature, so it’s not unusual to spot or hear some of our wild neighbors:
• Deer – often wandering through at dawn and dusk
• Squirrels & chipmunks – busy in the trees and around the cabins
• Lizards – sunbathing on warm rocks
• Birds – woodpeckers, hawks, owls, and songbirds fill the air with sound
• Ducks & frogs – around the lake and pond in the evenings
• Skunks – shy and non-aggressive, they help keep pests in balance
• Raccoons & possums – occasional nighttime visitors
• Snakes – usually shy and keep to themselves; rattlesnakes are rare, and they’re the only venomous snake in this area
• Bats – mostly seen at dusk, busy eating mosquitoes and other insects
• Bees – usually found around flowers and plants, important pollinators that keep the landscape thriving
• Flies – a common part of being outdoors in the warmer months
• Insects – butterflies, dragonflies, crickets, and sometimes ants or spiders
• Coyotes, bobcats, or mountain lions – very rare to see, but they do roam the surrounding wilderness
• Black bear – also rare, but possible in this region
