Welcome to Trail Canyon Ranch, located in historic McElmo Canyon, Colorado! Trail Canyon Ranch is a 500-acre ranch, of which most has been donated to the Montezuma Land Conservancy to preserve the abundant wildlife habitat and unique geological features, as well as Puebloan structures that have existed here for over a thousand years. Trail Canyon is a working ranch and tree farm as well as a wild Mustang rescue sanctuary.
The space
Use our casita as a basecamp to explore the countless archeological and geological wonders that SW Colorado offers. Canyon of the Ancients National Monument is 7 miles from the casita, Mesa Verde National Park 23 miles, Hovenweep National Monument 35 miles and Phil’s World mountain bike trail 25 miles away.
There are endless mountain bike trails in the area as well as Lizard Head Pass in our beautiful San Juan Mountains for cross country skiing and Telluride Ski Resort for unparalleled downhill skiing and snowboarding.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one hour away.
Come see us year-round. There is always an adventure waiting.
Guest access
The owner of the property lives onsite and we do ask your consideration to give him privacy unless you are having an issue with the casita and those instructions will be displayed. You are welcome to explore the lower and upper sections of the 500 acre ranch. There are 4 dogs on the ranch, a goat (Sir William) and several horses. If the horses are in the corral you are welcome to visit them, just do not open any closed gates. Please be aware that this is a working ranch and tree farm. There will be ranch hands onsite and equipment being used.
Other things to note
Board your horse at the ranch and ride and explore our 500 acres and nearby Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. Trail Canyon Ranch welcomes horses and their owners. To find out more about our private corrals, nightly boarding and feed rates, please contact us directly!
Up to two dogs are also welcome but must be leashed and able to coexist with our ranch dogs, sheep and horses. There will be a one-time $75 non-refundable pet fee.

I'm obsessed with: Trees and Nature
Lives in Cortez, Colorado
I love wildlife and domestic animals, land, land restoration and preservation. I have lived in southwest Colorado for over 30 years and currently own a 500 acre ranch that has been protected as wildlife habitat, open space and prime agricultural land through conservation easements.
