Welcome to Staithes – A Coastal Haven Steeped in History
Perched on the edge of the North Sea and backed by the rolling hills of the North York Moors, Staithes is a charming fishing village that feels like a beautiful step back in time. Tucked into a steep-sided valley, its red-roofed cottages and cobbled streets curve their way down to a tiny, picturesque harbour—one of the most photogenic coves on the Yorkshire coast.
Once home to sailors, smugglers, and a young Captain James Cook, Staithes today offers a slower pace of life, where the tide sets the rhythm and history is written into every stone and slate. With its calm, timeless atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings, it’s a perfect destination for a restorative escape.
Though the beach at Staithes is small and sheltered, the expansive sands of Runswick Bay are just a short drive away—ideal for swimming, beachcombing, or simply soaking up the sea air.

FACILITIES IN THE VILLAGE
Staithes is a charming and traditional fishing village, full of character and simplicity. While its beauty lies in its quiet, unspoiled feel, facilities in the village are limited—so a little planning goes a long way. There are a few independent shops and pubs tucked away near the harbour and on the High Street, but we recommend stopping at the Co-op on the main rd to stock up on groceries and essentials before making your way down the hill into the village.

The village’s narrow lanes and steep hill make it car-free at the bottom—pack light and wear comfortable shoes.
Mobile signal can be patchy, but that’s part of the charm. Wi-Fi is available at the cottage and most cafés. WIFI enabled mobiles work well.
