Other things to note
IMPORTANT TO NOTE

HEADSPACE & LAYOUT
This is a historic cottage, over 200 years old, and full of character. As with many period properties, there are a few quirks to be aware of—part of the charm, but important to consider:

LOW CEILINGS & DOORWAYS (Ground Floor):
The ground floor has low ceilings and doorways—approximately 190 cm—which may be restrictive for taller guests.

SLOPED CEILINGS (Upstairs):
The first floor extends into the roof space. While there’s good head height in the centre of the rooms and in the bathroom, the ceiling slopes significantly towards the window walls, which may limit movement near the edges of the rooms.

COMPACT BY DESIGN:
The cottage has been cleverly designed to make the most of the space, and it’s very cosy—but it’s not palatial. If you're looking for lots of space to spread out, this may not be the right fit.

That said, many guests find this all part of the authentic Staithes experience—snug, atmospheric, and full of charm. But if you’re particularly tall or require a spacious layout, it may not be the most comfortable choice.

PARKING IN STAITHES

Parking in Staithes is limited due to the village’s historic layout. The narrow, cobbled streets weren’t designed for vehicles, and visitors are strongly discouraged from driving down into the old village, as it can become easily congested and difficult to navigate.

🚗 Unloading on Arrival
During quieter periods, it is possible to drive down the hill and use the marked bays on the left near the bottom to unload. You may stop here for up to 40 minutes to drop off luggage and shopping. Chapel Yard is just a few steps from these bays, making unloading convenient.

🅿️ Where to Park
There is no guest parking available in the old village itself, but this is often seen as a benefit—many visitors appreciate the peaceful, traffic-free atmosphere.

Parking is available in the public car park at the top of the village (Bank Top Car Park). Within this area, there is a designated zone for permit holders.

🎫 Parking Permit
We provide a free parking permit for use during your stay:

You'll find the permit inside the property when you arrive.

Please ensure the permit is returned before departure so it’s available for the next guests.

Top Tip:
If you arrive during busy periods, we recommend unloading quickly and parking up before exploring the village—it’s all part of the Staithes experience.

Neighborhood highlights

Welcome to Staithes – A Coastal Haven Steeped in History
Perched on the edge of the North Sea and backed by the rolling hills of the North York Moors, Staithes is a charming fishing village that feels like a beautiful step back in time. Tucked into a steep-sided valley, its red-roofed cottages and cobbled streets curve their way down to a tiny, picturesque harbour—one of the most photogenic coves on the Yorkshire coast.

Once home to sailors, smugglers, and a young Captain James Cook, Staithes today offers a slower pace of life, where the tide sets the rhythm and history is written into every stone and slate. With its calm, timeless atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings, it’s a perfect destination for a restorative escape.

Though the beach at Staithes is small and sheltered, the expansive sands of Runswick Bay are just a short drive away—ideal for swimming, beachcombing, or simply soaking up the sea air.

FACILITIES IN THE VILLAGE

Staithes is a charming and traditional fishing village, full of character and simplicity. While its beauty lies in its quiet, unspoiled feel, facilities in the village are limited—so a little planning goes a long way. There are a few independent shops and pubs tucked away near the harbour and on the High Street, but we recommend stopping at the Co-op on the main rd to stock up on groceries and essentials before making your way down the hill into the village.

Once you arrive, you’ll find a lovely selection of local favourites that give Staithes its unique flavour:

🛒 SHOPS AND LOCAL PRODUCE

Betsy & Bo
A small artisan deli and sweet shop offering a hand-picked selection of treats including wine, cheese, olives, biscuits, and freshly baked goods. It’s also a great spot for good coffee and unique gifts—perfect a touch of indulgence during your stay.

☕ CAFES AND TEAROOMS

Dotty’s Tearoom

Cobbles Coffee Shop
Known for excellent takeaway coffee and weekend wood-fired pizza, Cobbles is a local favourite. Don’t miss the ice cream—it's a hit with visitors of all ages, especially after a walk along the harbour.

🍽️ PUBS & DINING

Cod & Lobster
The most iconic pub in Staithes, sitting right on the harbour wall. Offering traditional pub food, fresh seafood, and a terrace overlooking the harbour—ideal for watching the tide roll in with a drink in hand.

The Royal George
A cosy, classic pub on the High Street with a relaxed atmosphere and solid selection of drinks. A great option for a laid-back evening out in the heart of the village.

The Captain Cook Inn
Located at the top of Staithes Bank, this pub and restaurant is a popular choice for a full sit-down meal. Expect a wide menu, friendly staff, and a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Top Tips
Most shops and cafés are independent and locally run, so opening hours may vary—especially in low season.

The village’s narrow lanes and steep hill make it car-free at the bottom—pack light and wear comfortable shoes.

Mobile signal can be patchy, but that’s part of the charm. Wi-Fi is available at the cottage and most cafés. WIFI enabled mobiles work well.
