Discover "The Ell," a beautifully renovated, private 2-bedroom, 2-bath guest suite within the iconic 1839 James Walker House in Lovell Village, Maine. This Greek Revival mansion, once home to a timber magnate and featured on the covers of "Maine Homes" and "Yankee" magazine, offers a unique blend of rustic charm and modern luxury.

The space
Stay in a unique piece of history in Lovell. These rooms once housed workers in Walker's barrel stave shop; now they've been transformed into a luxurious retreat, blending the charm of the past with modern comforts. We've preserved original features like trim, doors, and pine floors while adding two new bathrooms and updating the space for today's traveler.

Experience Maine's "Upta Camp" vibe in a space that feels like a multi-generational lake retreat. A private hallway serves as a communal area with a drop-leaf table and daybed for extra sleeping, surrounded by local reads and soft lighting.

Each of the two bedrooms offers a queen bed, unique antiques mixed with contemporary pieces, and private bathrooms styled after early 20th-century spas. Enjoy plush bedding for a restorative sleep, fast WiFi for connectivity, and high-end bath products for your morning refresh.

This rental stands out in Mount Washington Valley for its design, comfort, and historic ambiance, ideal for your four-season adventures, hiking, skiing, spending time on the lake, or simply enjoying Maine's scenic beauty. We're excited to share this special space with you.

Guest access
Guests enjoy exclusive use of the suite, with the option to use the shared front porch of the main house. Smoking is permitted outside only.

Other things to note
While this suite is part of our primary residence, your privacy is maintained, as the space has a separate entrance. Be prepared for the charm of an old house: low windows, creaking floors, and the occasional bug. There's no kitchen, so plan your meals accordingly, though you'll have a mini-fridge and coffee bar at your disposal. There is no AC, but fans and window screens are provided in each room for your comfort. Pets are not accommodated due to space constraints. Laundry facilities are available upon request.

Neighborhood highlights

The house is set in the heart of Lovell Village, a charming, well-preserved early nineteenth century hamlet in a tiny town of less than 1500 set in the timber-laden foothills of the White Mountains. The jewell of Lovell is Kezar Lake, a secluded 2500-acre body of crystal-clear water, surrounded by sweeping mountain views and adorned with spectacular sunsets, eerie loon calls, and wading moose. Kezar is consistently ranked among the most beautiful lakes in New England, if not the world. The lake, the summer hikes and winter skiing on the mountains that surround it, abundant hunting and fishing, the lazy Saco River and the beaches that line it, as well as the annual bacchanal of the Fryeburg Fair, draw thousands to the town every year. The area’s rural character belies it as the location of numerous exceptional dining opportunities, hidden away, like the lake, only for those in the know.

The house is waking distance to the Lovell Village Post Office, the Charlotte Hobbs Library, the town tennis courts, and recreation field. The area features sweeping White Mountain views at every turn.

Lovell is equidistant between North Conway, NH and Bethel, Maine, about a half hour away from each, giving unparalleled access to a range of winter sports options. The house is less than 10 minutes from the town beach at Kezar Lake to the east, and the Fryeburg Fairgrounds to the west. The ski area at Pleasant Mountain (formerly Shawnee Peak) is a mere 15 minute drive. The White Mountain National Forest, particularly Evans Notch, is also a short drive away.

I grew up in Maine. Went astray. Traveled the world and stayed in a lot of Airbnbs. Now I’m back here for good and don’t ever want to leave again. Now I enjoy making cool places for people from all over to stay. I’m trained as an architectural historian but now I work as carpenter and love it
