Our Shepherd’s Hut is located in the village of Small Dole on the outskirts of the South Downs National Park. Close to Brighton and the south coast, the shack is perfectly situated for walking, cycling and exploring the national park. Located in a quiet, private corner of our large garden (approx 50 meters from the house) the shack is well-equipped for a comfortable, relaxing stay. The village shop and pub, The Fox Inn, are only a two minute walk away.

The space
The South Downs Shack has a double bed and kitchenette with sink, fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave.
The Shack has under-floor heating to keep you warm in the winter months. It also has a bathroom with hot shower, sink and cassette toilet. There is a folding table and chairs for inside dining and ample under bed storage for luggage.
The Shack is set away from the main house and guests can enjoy their own private outside space, with dining table and chairs amidst our beautiful established trees.
We also provide guests with a welcome basket for their stay, including fresh bread, milk, butter, jam and a selection of teas and coffee.

There is also a BBQ and fire pit available. We can provide bbq utensils on request.

Guest access
Please note, the shack is located at the end of our garden approximately 50 meters from the house. Guests have their own private outside patio area which is shielded from view with bamboo bushes and had an outdoor table, chairs, bbq and fire pit. This is our family home but we do try not to use the main garden when we have guests staying to ensure maximum privacy.

Other things to note
This is a small but cosy space so we recommend bringing smaller bags rather than a big case as this can be easily tucked away under the bed to give you maximum room.

Neighborhood highlights

The village of Small Dole is set on the outskirts of the South Downs National Park. The village shop with post office and local pub, The Fox Inn (serving delicious home cooked food!) are only a two minute walk away. Other excellent pubs within walking distance from our Shack include Tottington Manor, The Ginger Fox and The Shepherd and Dog.
There are plenty of scenic walks and hikes on our doorstep and the shack is the perfect base for exploring the South Downs. Guests can access the South Downs Way from the shack; 30 minutes on foot or a 5 minute drive. My husband and I would be happy to suggest some lovely walks from the Shack which explore the beautiful surroundings, for example walks to the historic Bramber Castle, along the river Adur and up Devil’s Dyke for stunning coastal views.
The beaches of Brighton, Hove, Shoreham and Lancing are only a short drive away.

A Yorkshire lass living in Sussex. My husband Gareth and I love to explore the countryside on hikes with our son Arthur, daughter Edith and dog, Arnie. We moved to the village of Small Dole in 2020 when we decided to renovate an unloved property into our dream family home. As part of this we decided to turn a neglected corner of our large 50 meter garden into a cosy bolt hole for guests to stay in our newly built Shepherds Hut; the Shack. We hope to pass on our love for walking, SUP and exploring the South Downs to our guests and hope you will enjoy the area as much as we do!
