Perched on the bluff with expansive Ring Of Fire views, The Lookout at Old Cannery Ranch is a private unit for two on our 15 acre high-bank waterfront ranch. Vacation home privacy with a hotel-clean vibe and natural bath products. Visit our equines, view our beehive, and watch the shorebirds and eagles float past your window on the updraft. Close to beach access, world-class fishing, horse and ATV trails, nordic skiing, birding, sunsets, and stargazing. Non-smoking property.
The space
The Lookout is brand new construction (2024-2025) and the landscaping is still a work in progress. Spring / Summer 2025 visitors can expect to see some outdoor areas under construction.
This unit has a 750 gallon water cistern and a 55 gallon hot water tank. We refill the cistern weekly, but please be conscientious of your water usage if you choose to book with us. Extremely long showers may require time between to wait for the hot water to recharge. We have a small capacity, high-efficiency laundry center available for guest use.
We are conveniently located off the Sterling Highway. While the Lookout is tucked back from the road with a private feel, you can faintly hear passing cars along with the waves from the beach below when the tide is right and the winds are up. The driveway is circular and can accommodate multiple vehicles and trailers. Please let us know if you will be driving anything very large, so we can set you up for success.
The Old Cannery Ranch is located on traditional Dena'ina lands in the community of Clam Gulch. This property was once the site of a fish cannery that burned down in 1979. A book about the history of homesteading in Clam Gulch and the Cannery years is located in the Lookout. We purchased the property in 2020 and converted it into our small ranch. We have 2 resident equines, Klaus the Fjord horse and Firefly the Wondermule.
Our ranch is directly across the highway from the Clam Gulch winter trails. This is a popular recreation area for snow machines, mushers, backcountry nordic skiing, and fat tire biking. In winter, you can access these trails by crossing the highway from your unit. The summer trail access is a few minute drive to the south, and has a large parking lot for trailers. It is a great area to ride ATVs and horses, in addition to the local beach access a few minutes to the north of the ranch. 15 minute drive to the Pollard Horse Trail, and 10 minutes to incredible salmon fishing on the Kasilof River. The nearby community of Ninilchik offers halibut fishing charters, 18 minutes south.
Soldotna is 30 minutes north and has the nearest large grocery store. Nearest gas and small groceries are roughly 15 minutes to the north and south, in Kasilof and Ninilchik. Ninilchik offers some fabulous fishing charter trips. Homer is 1 hour south, and has many activities for tourists and naturalists.
Guest access
We ask guests to please stay away from the edge of the bluff for safety and to protect our bluff from erosion. There is a short trail people can follow along the bluff to view and visit the horses; please respect the "private" signs, as well as the staked property line close to the Lookout. I am happy to provide scheduled tours of the rest of the property for guests who want to visit to the beehive, talk about the plants and gardens, and interact with the horses.
Other things to note
We wash ALL bedding between guests, every time!
