Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Annexed to a Manor House that dates back to the 1100's, Garden Cottage is as steeped in history as it is modern comforts and technology.

Deceptively private inside, this is the perfect getaway for couples, friends or families to enjoy Somerset.

On the outside, a pet friendly small courtyard with BBQ & wood fired hot tub.

On the inside - comfort & history coupled with Fibre WiFi, Alexa, Disney+ exceptional sound system and modern appliances.

The space
I am fortunate enough to live on an estate that dates back to the 1100's or so. Garden Cottage was renovated from a general store to a home in the late 90's and has been rented since then.

I know how important it is to you for me to be very clear about the space and not to "sell" it too much. Please please take the time to read this description!

We've a 2 night special for weekend bookings, which means that all Sunday check outs are 5pm - so you have the FULL day. Nothing worse than having to leave early.

Whilst attached to the main house, it has it's own entrance, privacy and benefits from a small secured courtyard perfect for dinner, a BBQ, a hot tub (wood fired, Ofuro 'soaking' style). It takes a while to heat but I can light and manage the fire for you if you'd like - it is very VERY comfortable. The first heating is included in the rate, with additional loads of wood available for a £10 contribution.

On the outside of the main entrance is a cobbled drive that is used by me to access outbuildings, as well as another property down the way - Mike and Dave live there and are pretty awesome.

Your privacy is important, so I can reassure you that no one can peek in the house itself - though you will need to exit the front door and walk around 10 paces to the courtyard, which is fenced and private.

Immediately inside the front door is a coat, hat and boot rack, you will also find a cloakroom / bathroom. To the left is a well equipped kitchen with induction stove and double oven, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, Dualit multi coffee maker and more than just essentials.

Just check with me if you're planning a massive shop as I almost certainly have a few bits that you can just have - rather than buy especially. Speaking of which, Ocado, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's are all familiar with where we are - if you'd like to "pre-provision" let me know and I will unload and stock your things before you get there.

Up two large steps from the kitchen, through an ancient glass fronted door (it used to be on the 1938 steam ship "Mauritania" is the living / dining room. A dining table and chairs for 6, a dresser, super comfy sofa's (a 2 & 3 seater), 4K TV, Alexa, FireTV (standard TV stations, catchup, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ etc), all arranged around an old bread oven alcove. There is also a record player, CD player and a really good collection of DVDs.

In the bread oven alcove are bench seats & a table to sit and gaze adoringly at each other or play board games.

Up the fairly tight spiral staircase (you might struggle if you have mobility issues), you will find a master bedroom with an Emperor bed, dresser, chair etc.

All upstairs rooms are equipped with Velux windows with blackout blinds.

The main bathroom is unusual - the layout means that the bath is the main way to wash - there is a shower head, but only the smallest of people will be able to stand underneath it. It's flexible and mounted on the ceiling - in 10 years there haven't been any complaints, but I thought it worth mentioning.

The hallway upstairs has a chair for dumping whatever you need on it before you come to the second bedroom. Bedroom two has two single beds that may be pushed together to fashion a double bed. Please note that this is very much "two single beds pushed together" and not a proper Queen bed. There will be extra blankets and pillows available to stuff down the gap if you're absolutely hell bent on being close! There is a TV with DVD player for the kids.

The hot tub is available year round - please let me know in your booking if you're wanting to use it so I can make sure it's ready. There is a knack to getting the temperature correct, I'm happy to get it ready for you - or leave very detailed instructions.

We have a 7kw EV charger available.

I've been as clear as I can be, the photos are really quite honest - do not hesitate to contact me with any questions and queries.

Guest access
You can park immediately outside the front door temporarily to unload, with the main parking being about 30m away. There is a dedicated space for one car, with a second car being possible. There is a security light as well as an EV charger available. I will be sending you a very cringe video to help find the place as there aren't any signs.

Other things to note
The house and exterior courtyard is very private, though I live on the estate with my family.

If you book for a weekend (Friday and Saturday night), check out time is extended to 5pm on the Sunday so you can make a whole day of it!

The rest of the areas such as the driveway, and other yard spaces are used by approx 4 other people during the day.

You will almost certainly see me puttering around sorting wood, lighting the hot tub, feeding the Highland Cows and occasionally whistling for the bloody dog to come back inside - there are other tenants knocking about during the day - but we're all super friendly yet will leave you alone as much as you like.

The spiral staircase and layout mean that anyone with mobility issues will likely struggle.

Neighborhood highlights

Churchill is a historic village at the bottom of the Mendip Hills, with Black Down Hill visible from the property. Within walking distance there are some epic pubs of all descriptions, including The Crown, which can only be described as 'The Pub-iest Pub in the World', The Nelson (cheap as you like buffet), The Stag and Hounds (2 for 1 food - reasonable) and The Churchill - family food, prices and drinks.

Also within stumbling distance (especially after the pubs) are Churchill Sports Center, St John the Baptist Church (Norman era) and Mendip Outdoor Pursuits. Mention us to get a discount on all activities - battle archery, frisbee / disc golf, caving, skiing (not a typo) and everything in between.

The Wave Bristol, Bristol Hippodrome, We The Curious and many other sights are within a short drive.

Some amazing walks up and down Burrington Coombe are close by, as well as some of the best cycle routes in the South West (check your Strava app - Cheddar Gorge, Burrington Coombe, the Somerset levels and Glastonbury are all a quick lycra clad ride away.

The famous Strawberry Line cycle and waking route linking Yatton train station (direct trains available from London) and Cheddar goes past the back of the house.
