The Chapter House is a spacious and quirky Grade II listed cottage nestled in the heart of Whitby. This central location is ideal for families and friends to use as a base to explore all that Whitby has to offer. The house started life in 1891 as a church Vestry and retains much of its original character.
Please note, the church which it was part of is now a cafe and music venue. Beyond the Gothic stained glass windows, the Chapter house has all the modern amentities of a holiday hideaway
The space
The Chapter House is at the very heart of Whitby. If you want to enjoy the pubs, teashops and restaurants of Whitby, they are all within a stones throw.
The house is accessed by a private gateway which leads you through the original oak church door and into the hallway.
The ground floor comprises of:
Twin bedroom with wardrobe, dressing table, stained glass window and access to family bathroom.
Family bathroom with bath, overhead shower, sink and WC.
You need to pass through this bedroom to the Master Bedroom.
Circular Master bedroom with ensuite (WC and wash basin), superking size bed, double wardrobe, chest of drawers and stained glass windows.
Continue up the curving staircase, complete with recessed bookcases, to the First floor. Here you will find the spacious open-plan living and dining area. Flatscreen TV, DVD player, free Wifi, Sony stereo, a range of DVDs, CDs and board games to be played around the large dining table.
The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave oven.
Pet friendly.
No smoking inside the house.
Heating: Gas central heating and hot water is stored in a hot water tank - it is not a combi boiler.
Notes: Travel cot and highchair available.
Brunswick street is in the centre of Whitby, ideally located for the train station, shops, pubs and cafe's - but there is no public parking.
Parking permits are provided for the duration of your stay and there are usually parking spaces a short walk away in either of the two side streets opposite (Newton Street and Walker Street). A parking disk is also provided for guests to park for up to 1 hour in a disk zone.
The Chapel on the hill, which The Chapter House is joined to, is used primarily as a cafe and for the occasional musical evening. If there is an event on that guests are interested in, we can usually organise free tickets. They usually run between 8pm and 10:30pm.
Whitby
Whitby is a popular choice for visitors all year round. It is well known for its long sandy beach and delicious seafood. For a different day out, why not climb the famous 199 steps to reach the ruins of Whitby Abbey. It's said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stokers Count Dracula, and its gothic splendour is the perfect place from which to take in some truly stunning views over the town.
Whitby harbour is steeped in history and visitors can see where British explorer Captain James Cook first worked as an apprentice before setting sail and discovering Australia. The harbour is a buzz of activity and you can enjoy early mornings watching the fishing boats come ashore before getting first choice of their catch. There's always something happening throughout the town , and festivals and fairs are held throughout the year including Whitby Goth Festival, steampunk weekends, the Fish and ships festival, soul weekends, Pirate festival, Krampus run, traction engine rally, Whitby Folk Week and the Whitby Regatta.
Guest access
The Keys to The Chapter house are located in a key safe located next to the front door. The combination to the safe will be forwarded to guests prior to their arrival.
