Located on Portage Lake in Chassell, MI, near Houghton with quick access to Michigan Tech University, this rustic family cabin is a great place for either an overnight stay or a longer getaway. It provides a great home base for travel in the Keweenaw peninsula! As a 1930s cabin with a sauna on the lake along with a great view, the focus is on the experience! We find guests who truly enjoy our place are flexible with rustic conditions (not looking for Holiday Inn Express) and young at heart!

The space
Along with the house of the owner, this is the only cabin on this property. Guests have access to the sauna (separate from the cabin and next to the lake) which includes a hot water shower. The cabin which has only cold water includes a kitchen (with a refrigerator, cooking surface, convection oven, microwave oven, griddle, coffee and hot pot) as well as a toilet. The cabin is located over 150' feet away from where you will park and we provide a wagon to help move luggage.

The cabin is located on Portage Lake in a quiet neighborhood with a rails-to-trails path right across the road that is great for walking, running or biking. A township park is located on the lake 3/4 of a mile to the south. The Michigan Technological University campus is located 6 miles to the north and west on US 41. Downtown Houghton (where the dock for the Ranger to Isle Royale is located) is one mile farther where you will find numerous dining options and an outstanding brewery.

I recently retired after a 30 year, wide-ranging career with the State of Kansas, most recently as the Director of Training Services with the Kansas Department of Commerce. Although I grew up in suburban Chicago, I spent my summers in the U.P. with a strong Finnish-American cultural influence and came to know the area like the back of my hand. My wife Julie was a beautician and ran a house painting business. We both have a strong appreciation for the outdoors and look forward to the opportunity to meet those who travel to the area.
