Forage Edible Plants & Mushrooms
Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 1-3-mile walk in the unique coastal oak & redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season. Mushrooms come out after the rains and fruit through winter, sometimes into spring). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem. This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail! Other things to note: Secure your own transportation to The Buttery and we'll caravan to the hike start. Bring: layers (it can get chilly in the redwoods), water bottle and comfortable hiking shoes. Optional: hiking poles, camera, hat, sunglasses. Gold Panning Crystal Sift@Real Gold Mine
We will meet at our Gem and mineral shop and then caravan to the mine. You will drive your own vehicle and follow me. The creek is located very close to the entrance of the mine. We are very lucky to have yearround water in our spring-fed creek for gold panning. We supply all the tools and pans and you get to keep all the gold you find! My goal is to teach you how to pan so you can go off and be able to find gold anywhere. I am highly experienced and can save you a lot of time and wasted money. I’m always happy to answer questions about equipment and other details of gold prospecting. After the two hour trip you will be a real prospector! I always tell people that I wish I was able to learn how to pan for gold on a real gold mine and gold country! It’s so hard for me to explain but look at the pictures and look at the people having fun. That’s what it’s all about! I love meeting new people and will tell you all about my story on the trip.
Evening Sail and Wildlife
We'll set sail from the Santa Cruz Harbor aboard the classic Westsail 42' Nomad, and head out into the Monterey Bay in search or good wind and wildlife. We'll be in search of gray, humpback whales, and dolphins. Experiencing sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and myriad sea birds are virtually guaranteed. Upon written request after booking your Private Sail we'll find an appropriate calm area to collect water samples for the California Dept. of Health Redtide Program. As this is a real scientific study, we'll record, submit, package and send in the water samples. Nearing the end of the sail we'll take leisurely tacks back to the harbor. At this point you are in an ideal location to take a walk on the beach or dine at an excellent restaurant. If you select the Private Experience button Nomad is yours for the experience, this is a private charter. This is the price for up to 6 passengers for 2 hours.
Intimately experience a biodiverse farm
We'll start by foraging through the farm to make a diverse "goat salad." We'll walk through the garden, stop to admire the beehives, meet the pigs, and then feed and pet our silly goats and adorable Babydoll sheep. Once our goats and sheep have had their salads, we’ll hand feed our gentle dairy cow, Harper, some of her favorite treats. After washing off any cow slobber, we'll treat you to a light seasonal farm picnic. You'll then walk off those calories by taking our miniature horses for a stroll, and you'll pet and feed these sweeties. Following our horse experience, we'll step in with the chickens and ducks. We'll feed them organic hen scratch and farm greens, if available. We'll watch them happily scratch around and quack and coo, and you can hold and pet them if you’d like too. While they’re scratching around, we’ll step into the coops to check for eggs. We'll compare the various types, shapes, colors, and sizes. We'll finish our experience with a calm and relaxing visit with our bunnies. We'll pet and feed these sweet and soft fur balls. All along the experience, you will learn fun facts about our diverse animal family, and you’ll leave with a seasonal farm gift. Other things to note: Wear comfortable closed-toed walking shoes and clothes you don't mind possibly getting a bit dirty. Boots and long pants are ideal. *Great for teams and team-building too!

Our tours are great for anyone comfortable riding a bike. Though you have to be over 14 years and 4'10" to ride solo, we can accommodate younger children as passengers with a parent on our e-Tandem bikes for $59 each. Or for younger children we have cargo e-bikes with back seats they can ride on for $29 each. If you are traveling with children, please call to discuss the exact nature of our ride to make sure everyone is comfortable and safe. Other things to note Pack a layer. It can be chilly on sections of the ride! You may want to pack a snack. Look for free street parking on Sunset Drive or nearby Crocker Ave.
Goat Walk on The Beach
We are hosting a goat walk on the beach with two or more goats for individuals or groups. We will meet at the trail head for a very magical and less frequented beach location. When we meet guests at the beach location to talk about goat safety, goat companionship, and the history of humans and goats. Then we will walk the trail to the beach and guide the goats on a walk by the water. Children are welcome to attend with adult supervision. The whole experience will last no longer than 90 minutes.
Yosemite Cider Orchard Tour and Tasting
Take a break from the rigors of Yosemite hiking and take a relaxing stroll through our orchard. Learn about what makes our 19 varieties of apples so special (and why you probably don't want to eat them), a brief history of American cider, some slightly embellished tales about the local wildlife, and some jokes that will either make you laugh or groan, depending on the weather. Then kick back at our tasting room to enjoy some bar games, beautiful views and a meet and greet with some really nice dogs and some really goaty goats. Oh, and cider of course. You'll get to drink cider. One sip, and you'll understand why call it "Campfire Champagne."
Alpaca Experience and Trek
This experience, for those 12 years old and up, includes learning all about alpacas as well as a trek around the farm while leading your own alpaca "buddy"! We begin in the Tuscan inspired barn, housing our horses and friendly donkey, "Jack". Starting with "Alpacas 101"-a 45 minute interactive talk regarding: origin, use, fleece, biology, breeding & behavior, you will become "Alpaca Experts"! Next we assign each person an alpaca and begin our trek. The trail starts across a bridge, up a wooded ravine and then along a fence adjacent to a 2,000 acre ranch where you will see beautiful vistas of the surrounding hills and mountains of Carmel Valley. We stop under a large oak trea for refreshments and interact with the alpacas. Continuing on the trail we go back to the pastures, passing horses, alpacas, goats and more stunning views of the Valley. There will be ample opportunities to engage with your furry friends and take photos of the landscape as well as the alpacas. Other things to note: the Alpaca Trek is not suitable for children under 12. Must be able to physically walk/hike up a moderately sloped trail while leading 150+ pound alpaca. Wear proper shoes for hiking. Running shoes/sneakers are ok. We will still go on the trek if there is light rain-so if this is the forecast bring rain hats/ponchos. Be sure to bring your camera or smartphone to take lots of photos!
Cuddles with Critters
Visit animal enclosures armed with carrots & treats as the animals come and visit. The horse, donkey & goats love carrots & grapes, the pigs will eat just about anything. See if you can get them to roll over when their belly is scratched! Inside the chicken enclosure baby chicks can be held if mommy hen permits. Mother hens with chicks or sitting on eggs are sometimes visible. A colony of rabbits enjoy the garden while tending to their babies. Treats, like fresh lettuce can be offered as the eager hens gather around looking for their favorite snacks. Just sitting back and watching the animals feed, swim and engage with each other is fascinating. Safety guidelines must be respected so that the experience is safe for the animals and the visitors. At any time of year there are many rescued animals that live here harmoniously. Things are always changing with the seasons too. The raised bed gardens provide vegetables, herbs and flowers and are used to feed the household and also the animals. Large compost piles give us beautiful black rich compost each spring to produce our abundant garden. The circle of life is illustrated in a rich tapestry at the Kitty Hotel, a modest homestead. 100% of your fee goes toward the upkeep and care of the animals.

Guided Snorkel Tour
Monterey Bay is the most productive and diverse ecosystem in California! Our giant kelp forests are home to a stunning variety of life forms such as sea lions, harbor seals, otters, sea stars, crabs, anemones, and jellyfish just to name a few. This part of the Pacific is my favorite place in the entire world and I'm so excited to be your guide into this incredible underwater world. We'll start by slipping into the thick wetsuits, which will keep us toasty in the otherwise brisk salty water. After a tutorial on how to snorkel we will prepare for our shore entry. Once in the water I will guide you through the beautiful kelp forests, in search of as many fascinating plant and animal species as possible. I guarantee you'll see things you've never seen before! Other considerations: The ocean can be intimidating, especially for the first timer, but I'm here to make you feel safe and comfortable in this new environment. Swimming skills are not required and with my close guidance you’ll be snorkeling with ease in no time. It's my goal to make the underwater world accessible to everyone. This is a great family bonding experience and I highly encourage any kids (10 years and older) to join! *Ocean conditions are subject to change and difficult to predict. I do my very best to analyze ocean reports to provide the best experience possible. If conditions are unsafe we will not go!
