Yes, Austin has the largest colony of bats in the world in the Congress bridge! These are Mexican free-tailed bats that migrate from Mexico. You don't need to pay for the tour, you could go to the bridge to watch them flyout at dusk to do their nightly feeding. They eat mosquitos so no need to fear these cute guys!

Come show off your putting game at an Austin original. The giant Peter Pan and T-Rex at Peter Pan Mini-Golf have stood guard over the intersection of Barton Springs and South Lamar since 1948. The company is family-owned and perfectly captures the city’s laid-back, funky attitude. Several new fixtures have been added in the last few years, and the whole course was recently renovated with bright new colors. Oh, and did I mention it’s BYOB?

This classic, colorful spot for mini-golf has been a family fun staple since 1948. The course, located south of the river near Zilker Park, features handcrafted sculptures of various animals, a giant T-Rex, a Chuck Taylor-inspired shoe and, of course, Peter himself. The kids will love it and it’s a grand time for adults too, especially considering there’s a BYOB policy.

In addition to being the first of the Texas University System campuses, the University of Texas at Austin is home to several top tourist attractions. The Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art has a permanent collection of 17,000 pieces of European, American, and Latin American art. The museum also hosts numerous temporary exhibits. Also on campus is the Harry Ransom Center, which houses a permanent collection of rare literature and printed materials and also has numerous temporary exhibits and collections on display. Among the museum's most prized pieces are a Gutenberg Bible from the mid-fifteenth century and the First Photograph, a heliograph developed on a pewter plate that was created in 1827 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. The Texas Memorial Museum is part of the Natural Science Center at the University of Texas and features a huge collection of items representing the natural and cultural history of the Lone Star State. Highlights include numerous dinosaur displays, fossils, gems, and minerals, as well as the famous Wichita County meteorite, a large space rock regarded as a medicine stone by Comanche Indians. Another impressive tourist site at the university is the landmark UT Tower, infamous for the tragic shooting in 1966. With a height of 307 feet, the tower provides beautiful 360-degree views of the city of Austin; tours are self-guided and include information on the architecture and history of the structure.

Not really a museum, but part of the Austin Children's Museum network. Despite what it says for the address above, this is in the Mueller neighborhood on Simond Avenue. The ACM is on Colorado downtown. The Thinkery is more like three floors of fantastic interactive exhibits for kids 3-11. Giant playground outside, multiple rooms inside for making, building, drawing, painting, exploring almost anything your child can think of. Really busy on the weekends, but it's a cornerstone of the Mueller neighborhood and a great way to spend the afternoon exploring the world with your children, especially if you are visiting Austin on one of our rare rainy days.

Central Market is a high end grocery store, but they also have a great in-house cafe. And best of all, they have a huge outdoor patio with a giant playground and running-around area. Every Friday in warm weather seasons, they have live happy hour music on the patio . . . and it's not cheesy background cover bands, it’s good legit Austin bands, playing family-friendly fun energetic music that the kids can boogey to. Wimberley is a quaint little town that is about a 25 minute drive from here. It has lots of great walkable shopping, restaurants, wineries! If you make the drive, be sure to also check out: Wimberley Market Days (first Saturday of every month Mar-Dec) with over 475 vendors. Park for $5. Jacob’s Well-if you want to swim, you must have a reservation. But it is a short hike and free to see the well itself. Highly recommend seeing this natural wonder. Wimberley Valley Winery-this is a beautiful winery offering a changing assortment of wines for tasting!

These are my favorites though. -Blue Corn Harvest – Farm to Table….nice variety…outdoor seating available -600 Degrees – Great pizza and beer (wine too)….outdoor seating available -District 6 – Sports bar….indoor and outdoor seating -Kork Wine Bar- Small food menu but good wine -Wildfire – Bar and restaurant with unique menus for each. This restaurant has stood the test of time. -El Monumento – Mexican food…great margaritas…..indoor and outdoor seating available -Sweet Lemon Kitchen – Breakfast and lunch only….mostly outdoor seating -Monument Café – Breakfast and lunch only…neat diner atmosphere **Off the Square 2020 Scratch Kitchen – Farm to Table…open air bar…located in The Rivery The Rivery has a sushi restaurant and a new sports bar, but I haven’t tried either one. **Austin -The Oasis – great view of Lake Travis….food is not very good but great for a drink and watching the sunset -Steiner Ranch Steakhouse – located across Hwy 620 from Oasis…also has good views -North – located in the Domain….great Italian food….indoor and outdoor seating available -Doc B’s – located in the Domain..American food with large covered patio -Culinary Dropout – located in the Domain…fun, open-air restaurant (The Domain is huge! There are lots of good restaurants and pretty much any store you would want is here. There is an active night life here as well. I just don’t know much about that.) -Franklin Barbecue- very long wait but supposedly worth it. People line up early in the day and they serve until food is gone. Never been there. -Matt’s El Rancho – located on South Lamar…great Tex-Mex…iconic -Hula Hut -located on Lake Austin…Hawaiian infused Mexican food…pier seating with thatched roof…Hawaiian fajitas are really good…Austin staple There are so many great restaurants in Austin I know nothing about. SHOPPING Strolling the Square is a must! There are several nice shops right on the Square, but don’t forget to go down the side streets. My favorites are The Escape (handmade gift items); La Bella Casa (décor, jewelry, clothes); Red Bird Mercantile (women’s clothes); All Things Kids (toy store); Brazos Market (boutique); Mesquite Creek Outfitters (outdoor clothing for women and men and a great bar); Rough and Ready Antiques; and Bella and Birdie Interiors. One store off the Square worth mentioning is BIG (Brookwood Community in Georgetown). It is a non-profit organization that provides work (and 100% of the proceeds) for adults with functional disabilities. The store has nice gift items and is beautifully laid out. There is a café as well. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES There are hiking/walking trails along the San Gabriel River. San Gabriel Park is a great spot to access some of the trails, have a picnic, feed the ducks, or let young kids play on one of the many playscapes available. The Blue Hole is upriver from the park and is a fun spot with a dam and beautiful rock walls. Georgetown Lake (located out Williams Drive) also has hiking trails available; camping sites; a swimming beach (Pebble Beach) and kayaks for rent. The neighborhoods around your home are a great spot for a walk too. Many of the older homes have been refurbished and provide an enjoyable place to stroll, especially at Halloween, Christmas or Poppy Season (April/May)! EVENTS -Poppy Festival – Usually in May. It was postponed until Fall this year due to COVID. Many of the homeowners in the Old Town area grow poppies in their yard each year. The festival is held on the Square with booths, food, and live music. -Christmas Lighting – The Square is beautifully lit for Christmas. The lighting takes place the day after Thanksgiving. -Christmas Stroll - This is held on a Saturday in early December. There is a parade, booths, food and live music. -Live Music and Karaoke, Farmer’s Markets and other events. See www.visit.georgetown.org for schedules. -Market Days – 2nd Saturday each month (March-November). There are booths and live music set up in the Square.

President Lyndon Johnson’s hometown was Johnson City, Texas. Johnson City is extremely close to the famous Lyndon B. Johnson Historical Park. Johnson City is also home to the Exotic Resort Zoo, which houses over 500 wild animals and 80 species. The Zoo is spread out over 137 wooded acres with several lakes and creeks. Pedernales Falls State Park is located within Johnson City. Activities include camping, hiking, tubing, picnicking, wading, mountain biking, bird watching, fishing, horseback riding, and river swimming. The hiking trails are extremely family-friendly. There is a duck pond, quarter-mile nature trail to a scenic overlook of twin falls, and a viewing station that is wheelchair friendly. The Tobacco and Wolf Mountains hold a 7-mile long trail. Johnson City, Texas holds several annual events: Blanco County Fair and Rodeo, 4th of July Spangle Dangle, Blanco County Fair and Rodeo and Big Carnival, Annual Wild Game Dinner, Johnson City Pig Roast, and Lights Spectacular Hill Country Style.
