Rhianna
From Rhianna's guidebook
No history buff’s trip to D.C. is complete without a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Home to our first president and his wife Martha, this expansive eighteenth-century estate is remarkable preserved. On what is still an impressive amount of land, you’ll find their stylishly appointed home, lovely gardens and grounds, and several historic outbuildings like a distillery and gristmill. It’s all been carefully preserved, and in some cases extensively restored, and it remains a fascinating look into the way wealthy Americans lived in the period. While this attraction is comprised of a few distinct buildings and does require some outside time, you’ll be able to spend the bulk of your experience in these lovely historic venues to avoid the rain.

Rhianna
From Rhianna's guidebook
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, also called the Udvar-Hazy Center, is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It holds numerous exhibits, including the Space Shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay, and the Gemini 7 space capsule. The 760,000-square-foot (71,000 m2; 17-acre; 7.1 ha) facility was made possible by a $65 million gift in October 1999 to the Smithsonian Institution by Steven F. Udvar-Házy, an immigrant from Hungary and co-founder of the International Lease Finance Corporation, an aircraft leasing corporation. The main NASM building, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C, had always contained more artifacts than could be displayed, and most of the collection had been stored, unavailable to visitors, at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Silver Hill, Maryland. A substantial addition to the center encompassing restoration, conservation and collection-storage facilities was completed in 2010. Restoration facilities and museum archives were moved from the museum's Garber facility to the new sections of the Udvar-Hazy Center.

I have two young boys, and these are a few of our favorite spots for them to play and interact: (1) Windmill Hill Park - in old town, has a nice area for running, a big play space, and across the street is the Potomac and a relaxing walk to old town center. (2) Chessie’s Big Backyard - a splash pad/adventure play structure/nature park, Chessie’s has it all for the kids and you can easily spend a few hours of fun here. (3) Great Waves Waterpark - a free waterpark, which is all I need to hear. Has slides and a wave pool, great spot for kids. (4) National Children’s Museum - located in the Reagan building in DC, but an awesome interactive museum with tons of hands on exhibits. Highly recommend. (5) Huntley Meadows Park - a giant nature preserve with a boardwalk through the woods and marsh. Great place to learn about tadpoles, turtles, and birds. (6) the International Spy Museum (the only not-free thing I recommend) - the kids get a special ID and mission and spend the rest of the time learning about espionage and trying to complete their mission.

Established in 1758, Leesburg is the seat of government for Loudoun County. The town's rich history spans three centuries. We feel fortunate to be residence of Leesburg. Being just a few blocks walk to the charm of our downtown is a bonus. Our history is rich with folks like President George Washington, Patrick Henry, General George C Marshall, President Truman to name a few who lived or were frequent visitors to our Town. Today what is so special about Leesburg is how vibrant our downtown is with shops and restaurants. On Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon the downtown streets are closed of to traffic creating a festive atmosphere. The western part Loudoun County has always had an agriculture focus. Forty years ago, it was corn and dairy cows. Today despite the growth of the Washington Metropolitan area and Loudoun County there has been a concerted effort to keep the rural character of the western part of the county. For the most part the cows are gone as are most of the corn fields. They’ve been replaced with grape wines and our 50+ wineries. Most of which are a short 10-15 drive from our house. If you’re looking for shopping the Leesburg Premium Outlets is 2 miles from the house. Downtown has many shops including specialty products, clothing, art galleries, and furniture to name a few.
