Known locally as the broken bridge, El Puente Roto honors and pays tribute to a devasting flood that tore apart the bridge and everything that was across the Rio Tomebamba from what is now know as the historic or old Cuenca, was destroyed. The bridge was repaired but not rebuilt, as a reminder that nature rules, not man. Many people lost their homes and their lives. Now the bridge is a gathering place for photo ops, disco dancing and strolling visitors. From the broken bridge you are a few steps from the Castle and all the wonderful eateries it contains.
