Sightseeing

Known locally as the broken bridge, El Puente Roto honors and pays tribute to a devasting flood that tore apart the bridge and everything that was across the Rio Tomebamba from what is now know as the historic or old Cuenca, was destroyed. The bridge was repaired but not rebuilt, as a reminder that nature rules, not man. Many people lost their homes and their lives. Now the bridge is a gathering place for photo ops, disco dancing and strolling visitors. From the broken bridge you are a few steps from the Castle and all the wonderful eateries it contains.

This large cathedral (circa 1885) features a series of sky-blue cupolas; the interior contains a magnificent altar and a famous crowned image of the Virgin Mary. There are tons of churches in Cuenca, but don't miss this one. Beautiful stained glass, marble columns, huge interior.

The Otorongo sector is located on the southwestern edge of the historic center of Cuenca, on Av. 3 de Noviembre, north bank of the Tomebamba River. It constitutes a historical point of the city, since the staircase was for a long time a descent of earth that united this sector with the center.

Parks

This is a fine park at the confluence of two rivers (Yanuncay and Tomebamba). Once a site of strategic importance which is why the native population built a settlement here called Pumapungo. Nowadays it is a quiet place where people go to relax or do sports. Very pleasant and peaceful ambiance even during the weekend when locals rent a paddle boat at the pond in the center of the park. I particularly liked the trail along the river banks which is a bit wild. Hard to imagine this place was once the scene of a devastating flood in 1950.
