Places to stay in McCarthy
This restored log cabin is a unique, comfortable accommodation in the middle of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Up to 3 people can enjoy the cozy cabin that's close to downtown McCarthy and the wilds of the park. Come visit--we welcome you! P.S. If your dates are booked here, check out "tiny2 b&b--cozy trapper cabin", listed separately. Same price, same location, similar amenities!
tinycabin is a lovingly-restored 30-year old Alaskan trapper's cabin, full of rustic charm and comfort. It's a small (11'x16') one-room log cabin, so come with someone you love! You'll be rewarded with an authentic "AK bush-town" experience in the middle of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. tinycabin is perfect for couples, but a third person can be easily accommodated also. There is a double bed, plus a futon mattress that can be set up on the floor. A covered porch looks out on a private grassy area (additional guests could camp), wildflowers and berry bushes, and mountain scenery. The cabin has both a woodstove and propane heater, propane and electric lights, and electrical outlets where guests can charge electronics. Wifi can be purchased by the day from the local hotspot. The kitchenette is stocked with supplies for guests to cook simply, plus "semi-running water" which is a cold water cistern and basin. Towels and linens are provided, as well as filtered drinking water.
We're close enough to downtown McCarthy for easy access to nightlife and services, but just far enough that our property feels quiet and private. Enjoy wandering from tinycabin up McCarthy Creek along a woodsy trail or out in the creek bed. The softball field is nearby, where you can throw a frisbee or play softball with the locals every Friday night! Our location is the perfect mix of accessibility to both town and scenic country for wandering.
  • Just go! Best place in the area! The cabin is really fantastic and Tamara is great. Everything was perfect in our stay: the cabin had all you need for our stay. It was extremely clean and with personal touchs. Breakfast excellent. Tamara was really helpful, considerated and kind. If we ever come back to Mc Carthy/Kennecot, we’ll go to tinycabin again. Thanks Tamara!!!

  • This was my second time staying at tinycabin. Tamara is an awesome host...very friendly and helpful. The cabin is so inviting, thoughtfully decorated and supplied with everything that one could need. It is impeccably clean and a lovely, quiet retreat after days of activity in the McCarthy area. The location is great, too, for McCarthy. It's only a block from the main street, so an easy walk to the couple of places to eat and shop in town. Tamara also makes awesome muffins to supplement the yogurt/milk/butter that she brings to the door in the mornings. Cereals, tea, honey, etc. are available in the cabin. I would not hesitate a second to return again!

  • Lovely cabin, perfect location!!! The bed was wonderful. Great stay and great hosts... thanks again.

  • This was one of the best, most welcoming experiences we've ever had while traveling. The Tiny Cabin is a marvel to behold; inviting and charming while reflecting the community of McCarthy. The beds are comfy, the morning muffins addictive and the hospitality both warm and genuine. I miss it already.

  • Darling! So clean, breakfast was perfect. A great place to hangout for a couple days. The privy was top notch!

  • The Tiny Cabin in McCarthy, Alaska is a wonerful, relaxing place to spend a few days. The owner/host Tamara is a friendly, thoughtful host who provides her guests with first class accomodations in this remote post in outback Alaska. We strongly recommend Tamara's Tiny Cabin to anyone who wants to spend a few relaxing days in this small, remote Alaskan frontier town.

  • One of the best AirBnb experiences we had so far! Tamara is an outstanding host. She was generous, helpful and when we had to cancel our first night spontaneously she was understanding and accommodating. The tinycabin itself is super cozy and perfectly located in the middle of McCarthy. The breakfast and especially Tamara's muffins were awesome! If we get the chance to return to Alaska one day, we would love to stay here again! Highly recommended!

    Mara2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Jim and I stay at a lot of Airbnb's and while we often times give 5 star reviews, in this case I wish there was a 10 star option! Tamara went above and beyond all expectations. She thought of everything when preparing the place for guests, i.e. a basket and chair in the outdoor shower, a flower garden to walk through when going to the outhouse, flip flops to wear to the shower, and fresh homemade rhubarb muffins and yogurt and granola delivered to our door in the morning for breakfast! . She even gave us a ride to the bridge in the morning and contacted me after I left to tell me I forgot an earring and she was shipping it to me! The cabin was so cozy and we had a porch and yard to sit outside at the end of a busy day! Cannot think of one thing that could have improved the experience! We will definately be back to at the tiny cabin!

This new 18x20 Alaska cabin is near McCarthy airport. Complete kitchen and tiled walk-in shower. Wireless internet, at cabin for Verizon subscribers. The best view by far of Mt. Blackburn, Ice Fall, and the Kennicott Mine right from the deck. You won't want to get off the deck. We offer vehicle transportation during your visit for a small fee (gas). Usually $10 for two days. We offer breakfast and light lunches. Bottled water too.
  • Great little cabin with an amazing view that’s easily accessible. Has everything needed for a nice extended stay!

    Wendy2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • By far the most gorgeous views of and place we've stayed. Super clean and comfortable space. Cannot wait to return!

    Brett2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Daniel's cabin was just lovely. It is very comfortable and clean with lots of extra touches, such as food and washing facilities. We especially enjoyed the beautiful view in this remote forested location.

    Sally2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was fine, as described. One Million Dollars view from the cabin !!!!

    Jörg2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Daniel makes an unusual place accessible. His cabin has the absolute best view in the valley. Very comfortable and even luxurious for McCarthy. Consider bringing a bike and simple crampons (Amazon) for glacier walk. Only Verizon phones work here. Yes, we loved it.

    Ann2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Dan’s cabin was perfect for our one-night stay in McCarthy. It was clean and comfortable, with plenty of light breakfast and tea/coffee options. We loved sitting on the deck and taking in the views. Dan kindly picked us up from the McCarthy airport and drove us between McCarthy, Kennicott, and the cabin (for gas money, which was far cheaper than taking the Wrangell shuttle). Highly recommended.

    Matthew2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing for the view alone, but there's much more than that. Dan is fantastic host and has a wonderful cabin.

The Wrangle Mountains are a magical place and so is Sweet Creek B&B. Turn right at mile 58.5 McCarthy Road, and follow the blue Sweet Creek B&B signs for 5 miles down a meandering country road, about 15 minutes. It's easy to find us. Drive right up. Wifi is available in McCarthy town, 6 miles away. CABIN for one (1) person only, no electricity or running water. You are welcome to use the house bathroom & living room. If you want to be closer to McCarthy, please book a different establishment.
We are fortunate to live in a remote part of Alaska. We use a large generator and battery bank to create energy. Therefor some items that you use in town would drain the power like electric curling irons, hair dryers, toasters, and fans. Therefore, we ask that you refrain from using these.
Just getting to McCarthy is an adventure. Our place is remote, quiet, and beautiful. You don't see or hear any neighbors, only the peaceful sounds of nature.
  • This is a great way to experience Alaska! Quiet and peaceful with a great view. 15 minutes to town, but allows you to do McCarthy your own way. I would love to stay here again.

  • Carmen's place is perfect for McCarthy. Secluded and quiet. Carmen is the perfect host. She is very knowledgeable about the area and people . We had a great time.

    Kenneth2018-06-07T00:00:00Z
  • Our visit to Sweet Creek, McCarthy, and Wrangell-St Elias was beyond exceptional. Secluded, quaint, and perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, those seeking a reprieve from city life, or a romantic getaway. No real words to describe the overall experience. Carmen was an amazing host, every aspect of our stay well thought-out and planned prior to our arrival. We lacked nothing and returned from our trip wondering how we ever can repay her generosity and hospitality. No doubt that we will return if ever in her neck of the woods.

    James2018-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • I would highly recommend Sweet Creek to anyone who is traveling to McCarthy. Carmen is a wonderful host with great communication and making sure we had everything we needed. The property is beautiful and the accommodations are spacious. We had a true Alaskan homestead experience. The 5 mile drive from the main road to get there was truly worth it.

    Carol2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • This place was totally magical! Clean and had everything we needed! Also the creek running through the property couldn't have been more beautiful and was a great thing to fall asleep too.

  • The property is off the beaten track of Mc Carthy, but can be reached by car in about 15 minutes from the pedestrian bridge over the Kennicott River. The house is very idyllic and quiet. The owner Carmen is very nice and helpful. We can recommend the accommodation to other guests.

    Hans-Peter2019-07-06T00:00:00Z
  • The place was clean and convenient. Carmen was also a nice host.

    Alex2019-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Carmen's was a delight! Perfect place to stay to explore McCarthy. The space was clean and had modern amenities. Extremely secluded and beautiful location. I would recommend this space to anyone.

  • Sweet Creek is a lovely BnB in a quiet secluded area in the forest. It is a bit further away from downtown McCarthy, but in a beautiful area by a creek. Just be warned, there is no WiFi/internet or much cellphone reception, but it’s a great place to unplug and enjoy nature for a bit.

Welcome to Kennicott River Lodge, McCarthy Alaska where the Wilderness is at our front door! The main lodge building provides a common area for guest to enjoy the comfortable lounge, self-contained big kitchen to cook and dine in, and decks and out side BBQ fire pit to cook and have bon fires around.
you can drive right up to your cabin forI am at the end of the McCarthy Road right before the walk bridge and easy walk to McCarthy. There is a daily and hourly van service from the other side of the walk bridge that takes folks up to Kennicott about every 1/2 hour doing the day.
  • Would like to recommend this place to stay if you go to Mc-Carthy. Brad is very kind, house is comfortable, view is great.

    Kittipong2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Could not have asked for a better experience for our trip to McCarthy. Brad was a warm and gracious host, the cabin was clean and cozy with the most stunning views, and the community atmosphere in the lodge was bright and fun. We loved meeting and chatting with Brad and the other guests, but had plenty of quiet time when we needed it. Really a unique and special stay, would absolutely recommend and stay again!

    Amanda2019-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • Kennicott River Lodge & Cabins is the perfect location for visiting the McCarthy and Kennicott areas of Wrangell St. Elias National Park. I was there a week and explored quite a lot and don't think there is a better place in terms of location, amenities and view. The place is very close to the footbridge to McCarthy and is more convenient than staying on the other side since you don't have to lug your things across the bridge. It is easy to catch the shuttle to Kennicott. The cabins are simple but very clean and well kept. The main lodge was had everything you needed to cook meals and eat comfortably. Brad is very friendly and welcoming. There were campfires every night I was there. And, the views of the Kennicott Glacier and the mountains are the best of any place you could possibly stay. I don't think that is hyperbole. I would very much enjoy staying there again.

  • Nice place to stay and very clean. The heat did not work, so we were quite cold overnight. But they did fix it the next morning.

    Suzy2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Well designed private cabins, best view in the area, friendly host, easy walking distance to McCarthy restaurants and shops. Shared hot showers and kitchen were decent, clean, and close to the cabins.

    Sara2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • super clean!

    Cynthia2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • The Kennicott River Lodge and cabins really are in the perfect location. They are super close to the McCarthy footbridge, which makes getting in and out of the town very easy. The cabins and lodge definitely have the most spectacular view of the Glacier in the park, it’s absolutely unobstructed, beautifully peaceful, and a wonderful place to stay. We were in a private cabin, as with most accommodation in the area there was no ensuite facilities, but there was a toilet located nearby, and we could use full facilities in the main lodge such as shower, sink, toilet etc. The lodge itself had a very comfortable living room area, plus a well equipped large kitchen and dining area. So we were able to make some breakfast and coffees each morning, other guests had brought more supplies and were happily cooking their own dinners there. As a host, Brad was absolutely superb. From the booking process, answering questions quickly and helpfully via the app, to greeting us in person when we arrived, to show us the facilities, and give us so much helpful local information. His dog Rio is absolutely adorable too! Brad was always available for any questions, advice, or queries. Having been there many years, he is a wealth of knowledge on the area. He recommended two places to eat, the food truck up at Kennicott ( Meatza wagon), and The Potato in McCarthy itself. Both of which were absolutely superb. The cabins are very well maintained and spotlessly clean. As was the main lodge, for the parts that we saw. I would highly recommend Brad, and the Kennicott River Lodge, for anyone who is looking for a fantastic place to stay in McCarthy.

Blackburn Cabins is quietly nestled in the forest along the historic Wagon Road between McCarthy and Kennicott, Alaska. Our eight eco-friendly, private log cabins offer a comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
Stay with us in your own luxuriously rustic cabin in the woods. Your Cabin comes with free bikes to use to explore historic Kennicott and McCarthy, and the natural beauty of the Wrangell Mountains. Spend the night away from the hustle and bustle of downtown McCarthy, but close enough to walk or bike to downtown McCarthy to have a nice meal, get a beer, take part in Thursday night open mic or Friday night softball game, visit the museum, catch some live music, or take the shuttle up the Kennicott. Each cabin is equipped with super comfy beds (either 2 full size or 1 queen size), a kitchenette (with a single burner cooktop, dishware, and running water), a shared gas grill with plenty of pots and pans, a drinking water filtration system, refreshing outdoor showerhouses with unlimited hot water (also considered a luxury in this neck of the woods!), real Alaskan outhouses, 100% cotton or bamboo linens and towels, a propane heater in each cabin (allowing for year round reservations!), free bicycles, and multiple fire rings for campfires!
There is wonderful hiking right from your front door. We’re just a quick walk from the “Toe of the Glacier”, with it’s million dollar views of The Stairway Icefall, Bonanza Ridge, and the 16,390 ft. Mount Blackburn. Keep your eyes open. Bears, wolves, foxes, and moose are commonly spotted here on the dryas flats, accompanied by the sounds of the glacier.
  • We’ve booked one day stay on Oct.2nd when all the other hotels and lodges and Airbnb are all closed. Livvi is the only one that welcomed us to their wonderful little cabin. We appreciated that we’ve provided a warm and clean place to stay at winter time. All the tips and amenities are very helpful. And they even provided WiFi which is such a surprise

  • Fantastic experience. Beautifully built cabins with thoughtful touches in an epic setting.

    Will2019-08-20T00:00:00Z

    Charlie2019-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • Very cute place! Great showers! Bit far from town, but totally do-able!

    Sandy2019-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • Awesome cabin! Highly recommend if you’re heading to McCarthy. The semi-outdoor showers are great. The bikes were really handy to get into town. Stayed here with a four year old and our eight month old and I would definitely stay here again.

    Kathryn2019-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • If you are heading to McCarthy/Kennicott on your Alaskan adventure, this is the place to stay! Gorgeous cabins. Easy pick up and drop off from the footbridge. Great suggestions for you to check out. Bikes for you to explore the area on. And then the cabins themselves are beautiful. So much attention to detail all over the property. It exceeded our expectations in every way.

Our Alaskan log house is perfect for a small family, couple or two couples traveling together. There is a fully set up kitchen for cooking including a refrigerator, electricity 24/7, gas grill on the large deck and a roomy private bathroom. The house has one bedroom, queen bed and a queen size sleeper sofa in the living room area. Each guest house is screened by natural vegetation for privacy but retains beautiful view to the surrounding mountains. All customers must drive to our location.
The Copper is a lovely, custom designed and built Alaskan log house. The house is fully contemporary with power 24/7, hot and cold running water, private bathroom with tub and shower, full kitchen with all the pots and pans and utensils all provided. Additionally, there is a gas grill supplied out on the spacious deck where you'll be able to enjoy the views while grilling. There is also a table and chairs set on the deck for outdoor dining, relaxing or enjoying a beverage while enjoying the views.
Currant Ridge is a 6 guest house lodging business located at Mile 56.7 of the McCarthy Road. We are located approximately 2.5 miles from the end of the road where everyone has to park since there is no public driving bridge over the Kennicott River to access McCarthy and Kennecott. All of our guest houses are drive up access so there is no need to carry your bags over the bridge or take a shuttle van to your house.
  • Very nice and relaxing after long, but beautiful drive on McCarthy Road! Be sure to go to the Kennicot mine.

  • This is a very convenient location either before or after you visit Kennecott. Lovely setting. The peace and quiet is awesome. We really appreciated the hospitality and their ecological approach in their cabins. You can expect a lovely rest in a very lovely setting.

  • Fantastic cabin equipped with everything you could need. All the cabins are situated close to one another, but we barely saw other guests. The deck in this cabin offers the best view and most privacy, in my opinion. Bathroom has hair drier & shampoo/conditioner.

  • Spotless, Spacious, with spectacular craftsmanship. Easy access. The written itinerary of the highway from Chitina to Cynthia and Andy's place was very helpful. Big roomy deck to enjoy the AK evening. Our first experience with Airbnb, so it was a great one.

Our private all log guest houses contain all of the comforts you are used to in your own home! Electricity 24/7, WIFI, full kitchens, private bathroom, large deck with spacious views of the surrouding national park, gas grills and all of the pots and pans you need for cooking. The super comfy queen bed in the private bedroom will give you a deep and relaxing sleep for the next day of adventure in our version of paradise. Look no further for your private lodging needs while in McCarthy, Alaska.
We are super convenient to get to and located right on the main road to McCarthy, Alaska. No need to schlep your luggage and groceries by walking or waiting for a pick up at the Kennicott River. You can drive right to your guest house door. Located only 2.5 miles from the end of the road you will enjoy our peace and quiet after a long day of adventuring in Kennecott, on the Root Glacier or rafting down the Kennicott River. We built our guest houses from scratch starting in 2003 and opened everything by the summer of 2006. All of the guest houses are made of locally sourced spruce logs and rough-cut lumber where we could use it. Nice touches that remind you of the railroad days are the rail spike coat hooks located in the house and the towel hooks in the bathrooms. We don't provide the following because we are off the grid and provide all of our electricity with solar panels and a battery bank - Hair dryers, irons, tvs and electric coffee makers and microwave ovens.
We are located 2.5 miles from the where the road ends at the Kennicott River. Everyone has to stop here and walk in to McCarthy or pick up a shuttle that will take you to McCarthy and Kennecott. The cost of the shuttle is $10/person round trip to Kennecott.
  • Sparking clean, new and well furnished with excellent views from the living room and bedroom. It was nice to have coffee, grinder and all necessities. Short drive to the Kennecott bridge you have to cross on feet to go to town or Kennecott.

  • Carmen was very nice, showed us around the place. She even let us stay in the bigger room since nobody else was using it, which was very thoughtful!! She had a variety of things to drink such as packages of hot cocoa, apple cider, different types of tea and Maxwell House French vanilla flavored coffee. She gave us good suggestions on where to eat, information on the shuttles, and the glacier, which was very useful. I would highly recommend it if you ever come out to McCarthy!!

    Beth2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Carmen's place may feel out of the way, but there are thoughtful signs pointing you in the right direction. The accomodations are comfortable and the shared areas are spacious. I'd recommend this place over any overpriced room in McCarthy.

tiny2 is the second cabin now available at tinycabins mccarthy! we are excited to offer tiny2 to guests for the first time this coming summer of 2020. tiny2 is a bit smaller than tinycabin, at 11'x13' inside, with an additional 6'x11' screened-in porch....come with someone you love! but trust us, we lived in it for more than a decade, and it's more comfortable than you might imagine a small space to be. we hope you'll make tiny2 your cozy homebase while you explore mccarthy!
this traditional trapper cabin was built in the early 1980's and inhabited by busy locals for years. we've restored every inch and now it's cleaner and brighter than ever before! one room of handhewn spruce logs has it all...a comfy bed, kitchenette, dining table/chairs, bureau and reading corner. the attached screened porch offers a bit more space to relax "outside" without pesky mosquitoes! it's just enough space for two people and only 2 blocks away from downtown mccarthy. perfect location to watch locals come and go from friday night softball or swallows fly to and from their nest boxes. we welcome you at tiny2!
tiny2 is 2 blocks from "downtown mccarthy", main street, the grocery store, restaurants, bar, local guide and flight companies and nightlife. tiny2 faces a dirt road where some vehicles and pedestrians go by. it's good people watching and easy access to town.

  • Great place, true Alaskan experience! Thanks for everything!

  • Oh man, these cabins are incredible! We camped two nights and booked this for the third night to have running water in McCarthy. It was beautiful and perfect; it’s got everything you need while still being rustic and in the wilderness. Having bikes available for all of us to be able to bike into Kennicott was great, although they are pretty old and some of the brakes don’t work. Tip: don’t bike the wagon road unless you’re in tip top shape. The hosts also picked us up at the foot bridge and shuttled us to the cabins which was amazing. The showers were awesome, and I loved the open ceiling. The cabin was clean, bed were comfortable, and the space was perfect for two couples for a night. We paid a pet fee for our little pug to stay which was great. I highly, highly recommend this place. Worth every penny.

A true Alaskan retreat in the heart of Wrangell-St.Elias National Park. Two miles before the McCarthy footbridge, the cabin sits on a hillside above Swift Creek nestled in the birch trees with a breathtaking view of the Chugach Mountains. This family built traditional " trapper style"cabin was built in 2015 and has most all of the modern amenities with solar powered electricity and hot running water in a serene and private drive-to location.
This a custom built log cabin that was built from logs that were harvested from the local spruce trees. It was built down the road and then re-stacked at its current location. Brand new appliances, modern decor and a comfortable queen size bed for sleeping.
This area of the road is called "Swift Creek". It is a private spot a little out of town which provides a real sense of wilderness.
  • Small haven of peace nestled in the middle of the forest. Perfect to relax.

  • We enjoyed three great nights at the Big Woods Retreat. The cabin is beautiful! Set in a peaceful location, close to McCarthy, but far enough away that you can enjoy the remote Alaska experience. Running cold and HOT water was a treat!! We also appreciated the refrigerator and kitchen that was set up well for cooking. All of this with solar!! so it's quiet and you have electricity. The queen size bed was very comfortable and it was wonderful to fall asleep to the sound of the nearby creek. Thanks for a wonderful stay!!

  • Beautiful cabin in a beautiful area! Loved having a kitchen, and the bed was really comfortable! Stay here, you won't regret it. Wish we could have stayed longer.

  • Stef and Adam's cabin was amazing - very cute and in a private location! It is nestled in the trees on the hill above a gurgling creek and has a very peaceful and relaxing ambiance. There is power, running water, and a refrigerator, which are such a convenience out in the "middle of nowhere"! The bed was comfy and everything was extremely clean. There is an outhouse instead of a bathroom, which worked perfectly for my husband and me. Communication with Steph was smooth and easy and reasonably timely. Will definitely stay here again!

    Julie2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • A really nice cabin near the park entrance and close to recreation! A very nice nights stay and a huge kitchen as well.

What a luxury to have a clean outhouse and take a hot shower while also being in the middle of nowhere! Denise went above and beyond as a host and graciously helped us through some mishaps (such as my husband shattering the French press. Yes, our cabin had a French press!) . Denise made sure we had everything we needed! Highly, highly recommend and I hope to stay here again!

PRIVATE CABIN IN THE WOODS! We are located at mile 26.8 on the McCarthy road, between Chitina and McCarthy. The cabin has all of the amenities you need. You have a private bathroom with HOT and cold running water in a private shower (Private hot showers are rare in most rental cabins). PETS WELCOME! The cabin has a breathtaking view from the spacious front deck. It overlooks the Chokosna river, and has amazing views of the wrangell mountains and thousands of acres of pristine wilderness.
We are the perfect place to stay for people traveling to tour the town of McCarthy. The cabin is tastefully decorated in an Alaskan fishing theme. The comfortable deck is only 25 paces from the banks of the Chikosna river. The sound of the river will lull you to sleep each night. It is surrounded by wilderness forest and is on the edge of the Wrangell St. Elias park. We are right off of the road and easy to get to. Your cabin does not include a kitchen or food storage (Bears love unoccupied cabins with food storage), so be prepared to visit the excellent restaurants down the road in the historic, quaint mining town of McCarthy or Chitina. You may bring a cooler with food and drinks and bring your own food with you, just be sure to be mindful of scraps and smells that could attract bears. Be sure to keep all food items secured inside of the cabin during your stay. The smart bears in Alaska know what a cooler is! So any coolers left out could be ransacked! Caned food is like a metal chew-toy with a "surprise juicy center" for bears. The cabin is positioned on the banks of the Chikosna river. During fish runs, the Salmon can be observed as they pack the water to spawn upstream. You may also take advantage of Alaska's gold and copper mining history and gold pan on the banks of our river. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to come away from you visit with a nugget to remember your stay in the Alaskan wilderness. Wildlife abounds on the property! Each morning, while enjoying a cup of coffee, sit in the comfortable deck chairs and watch. Many animals of numerous types can be seen, as they wake each morning at sunrise, to begin foraging. A family of river otters lives and plays on the property. If you are patient and quietly sit on the banks of the river, you might see them scampering and playing along the banks. The property is on a moose and bear corridor where animals frequently cross the river and saunter through the property. The animals are unaccustomed to people, so most do not fear people which can allow very close interaction. Take breathtaking photos of the wildlife from the deck of your private cabin, and even from the windows of the cabin. The cabin comes with a romantic propane heater that looks just like a woodstove with a romantic fire licking against the glass. It will keep you and your sweety warm through the crisp evenings. You will snuggle into a comfortable queen bed on those romantic nights. You will enjoy the tranquil and serene surroundings as you unwind from your time traveling. You will be able to listen to the sounds of the wilderness; owl hoots, bird calls and sometimes even moose bugle! The burble of the river is a peaceful constant in the background.
Expansive wilderness, amazing mountain views, sitting on the banks of the clear Chikosna river.

Fireweed Mountain Lodge-Jumbo Cabin is one of three private cabins situated on our five acre property. Located within the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park on the west side of McCarthy, Alaska, our property is a convenient home base for your visit. You can explore the natural wonder of the mountains and glaciers in our front yard, raft the rivers that surround us, satisfy your curiosity learning about early 1900s mining history in nearby Kennecott, and engage with our vibrant summer community.
Fireweed Mountain Lodge sits at the foot of it’s namesake, Fireweed Mountain. Each of our 320 square ft. cabins are stout-log constructed and privately located on our property. Large windows and decks off the front offer you majestic mountain views. The cabin’s main floor is furnished with a futon couch, table and chairs. The loft is furnished with a queen size bed. Private, new bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets are located just a short walk away. Linens and towels are provided. We are in the process of enhancing the interior of the cabins with local art, artifacts and additional furnishings. From our large, shared fire ring, you can enjoy views of the mountain ridge that once held the largest known copper deposit in the world. The copper mining history of the area inspired our cabin names. Bonanza, Erie, and Jumbo were the names of the mines located on the ridge in your view from the property.
We are located on the west side of McCarthy and the Kennicott River. Our property borders national park land on three sides. You do not need to cross the footbridge to access our property. Our community boasts a number of local establishments that offer food and drink, with a few establishments on the west side for your convenience. McCarthy offers weekly live music, open mic nights, local artists, yogis and masseuses. We would be happy to share information about local activities and events. If this will be your first visit to the area, we offer a quote from the Lonely Planet, “Alaska doesn't lack isolated frontier towns that act as magnets for a colorful cast of folk who want to live away from everything, and nor does it suffer a paucity of tourist destinations. But it's a rare place that manages to bridge the gap between these two identities – a spot that is authentically on the edge of civilization, yet welcomes those curious folk who want to peep in on the raw, wild pulse of the Alaskan bush. Enter McCarthy.”
  • Patrick and Amy have an amazing cabin at the base of the Wrangells with great view out of the front windows and porch. The bathroom is a short walk away from the cabin and is clean and simple. There is a great trail that goes up to the base of the Kennicott glacier starting right at the door! Highly recommend and would definitely stay here again. Patrick and Amy were very accommodating - great hosts!

The Wrangle Mountains are a magical place and so is Sweet Creek B&B. Turn right at mile 58.5 McCarthy Road, and follow the blue Sweet Creek B&B signs for 5 miles down a meandering country road. It takes about 15 minutes. It's easy to find us. Drive right up and bring your belongings in. Presently, wifi is available in McCarthy town, 6 miles away. This summer, we hope to have WiFi.

  • Carmen is a thoughtful and responsive host and we enjoyed talking with her and the other guests. Her house is in a lovely secluded setting and was very clean and comfortable.

  • Staying at Carmen's was a delight! Perfect place to stay to explore McCarthy. The space was clean and had modern amenities. Extremely secluded and beautiful location. I would recommend this space to anyone.

  • If you plan to go to McCathy/Kennicott, I highly recommend Carmen’s place. Hotels there are expensive and yet you don’t get private bath. Carmen is a super nice host, was very responsive when we had question about McCarthy road condition and how to find the place. The only downside is this place requires a bit more driving after you turn into the ally from McCarthy road, only about 10-15 min tho. Signs are easy to follow, so you won’t have trouble finding the place.

  • Good place to stay in the park. There was very quiet and clean, some oatmeals, coffee, juice for breakfast. The place is in about 5 miles from McCarthy road ~15 minutes drive.

We don't provide the following electric appliances because we are off the grid and provide all of our electricity with solar panels and a battery bank - Hair dryers, irons, tvs, electric coffee makers and microwave ovens.
Currant Ridge is a 6 guest house lodging business located at Mile 56.7 of the McCarthy Road. All of our guest houses have drive up access so there is no need to carry your bags over the bridge or take a shuttle van to your house. We are located approximately 2.5 miles from the end of the road where everyone has to park since there is no public driving bridge over the Kennicott River to access McCarthy and Kennecott. The cost of the shuttle is $10/person round trip to Kennecott.

  • Beautiful location. Clean, cozy cabins. This was our second time renting a cabin from Currant Ridge and I'd do it again and again. Lots of local information is provided in a binder in the cabin and the owners are also very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

  • We rented three cabins for our party of 11 while in McCarthy. The cabins are immaculately clean, have wonderful beds, and were quite comfortable for us. We used the grills outside to BBQ some dinner and everything worked wonderfully. After staying in 6 different homes all throughout AK for this trip, nearly all 11 of us agreed the McCarthy cabins were very special, as is the entire area. We would highly recommend staying here, and the hosts couldn't be nicer. The communication between them was superb--which is nice when visiting such a remote area (don't want to get stuck without a place to stay!).

  • Great place to stay!!

  • We loved the cabin and the area was beautiful. The cabin was perfect! In a rustic setting yet had all the amenities.

    Merritt2019-08-21T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great! Awesome location and very stylish and clean cabin. If there is an opening, book it!! If you do, here is what you can expect. Running well water, a filter for water, coffee/tea, and a little propane stove. There is access to hot showers and they have an outhouse nearby. I strongly recommend walking/biking down to the toe road nearby! Very nice lake with icebergs and rocks constantly rolling into the lake.

  • Owners and the staff were super responsive, helpful, and friendly. They picked us up and gave us an early check in. The location and the cabin were great. Especially if you are here in Wrangell St. Elias the intermediary level, i.e., want to experience the frontier rustic feel of Alaska, but still want access to modern living. Perfect balance in between camping and a hotel.

  • This cabin is located on the road behind the Kennicott Glacier Lodge, about a 10 minute walk up the hill. Our group of 5 stayed here for three nights from June 3-6. We were very comfortable in this cabin. There is a refrigerator and stove in the well-stocked kitchen so we had breakfast here each morning and packed sandwiches for our daily excursions. We had dinner at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge and it was really delicious, such a treat to experience what feels like a luxurious meal in such a remote place. This cabin has a bathroom with bathtub, toilet, and sink. The beds were comfortable (my parents in the queen, my little girl and I in the double) and the host offers cots and the couch for other guests. (Teenage son slept on the couch.) There is a TV and VCR with a huge selection of DVDs in the living room. The best part about the cabin is your accessibility to the wonders that Kennicott offers: The Mine Tour, a hike onto Root Glacier, the peace, solitude, and incredible views. A great home base for families and/or small groups of travelers. The cate takers were so accommodating and helpful. Highly recommend.

    Lindsay2017-06-06T00:00:00Z
  • I would absolutely visit the Historic Kennicott Copper Cabin again and enthusiastically recommend it for anyone visiting the area. I recently stayed for 2 nights with my film crew working on a documentary in the are and this was our favorite place we stayed. Kathy and Diane were the perfect hosts. The cabin was fully stocked, clean and thoughtfully appointed for my band of weary travelers. They went above and beyond, checking in on us - physically as there are really no phones or cell reception in the area. Kennicott is a unique remote town in the Wrangell Saint Elias National Forest. Unlike most cabins in the area, the Historic Kennicott Copper Cabin has running water in both the bathroom (which is adorable with original vintage features) and kitchen. There is a stove (and coffee pot and stocked kitchen) and some electrical outlets (running off solar power but strong enough for charging our equipment). There are LED lights in the rooms without electricity. The beds were COZY and the views are stunning. Another big plus, is that the cabin is close to town - an easy walk to Kennicott's main stretch and the shuttle to McCarthy and also has access to drive a car or 4x4 up to the cabin. In a place like Kennicott these are important, helpful considerations! Enjoy.

Every little detail is thought of with filtered water, sink in the room, showers, bikes, grill, etc. We can’t say enough about this place. We want to go back it was so much fun!

  • Thanks for a great stay. We were pleasantly surprised at your cool little cabin village! The beds were super comfortable and we were impressed at the running water, nearby outhouses, and a fun outdoor shower. We would have liked better-functioning bikes, since the location is quite far from town (1 mile away, which we ended up deciding to walk), but that's really our only complaint.

  • Awesome cabin in a super remote location. However, there is everything you need in this cabin. The cabin is also very clean and in a great location. Restaurants in this little town are surprisingly good and in a short walking distance from the cabin. We asked for recommendations for trips and our host even called to book our tour. Highly recommended place!

  • We had 4 adults and 2 kids fit comfortably in this space. All the amenities are brand new and the beds are extremely comfortable. The dark curtains were much appreciated for helping kids sleep in the late spring. Erin was incredibly helpful and responsive in making sure we were comfortable and had everything wr needed. The unit ran out of water at one point, and she was here quickly to get it fixed (took less than 10 minutes all told). Everyone we ran into in McCarthy was friendlier and helpful. Thanks for making or first trip to McCarthy a super memorable one!

  • Wow what a gem! McCarthy is very rustic so this little guesthouse really stands out. Modernized and comfy, it's one block in from the main street and close to everything. The power, plumbing, heat, WI-FI! and all amenities are fully up-to-date (not everything in McCarthy is) and it was a pleasure to return here to unwind after being out adventuring all day in and around McCarthy and Kennicott. I stayed in the lower guesthouse and it's just perfect for two couples - has two separate rooms with really comfortable mattresses and a great deck out back. I also had a chance to peek in to the upstairs house and it is also nice with a full kitchen. I don't think there are any accommodations in McCarthy that are nicer than this, I would stay here again in a minute.

But it's a rare place that manages to bridge the gap between these two identities – a spot that is authentically on the edge of civilization, yet welcomes those curious folk who want to peep in on the raw, wild pulse of the Alaskan bush. Enter McCarthy.”
