Places to stay in Keokuk
Located 1½ miles north of Keokuk, nestled on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, sits a quiet sanctuary waiting for you. There is a private bedroom with a queen bed and another sleeping area with four twin beds, perfect for one person or a family. All are welcome! Relax, enjoy nature, and take advantage of our large backyard. We are located approximately 18 miles from downtown Nauvoo via the bridge in Keokuk. WINTER SEASON TRAVELERS: 4-wheel or All Wheel drive required for snow & ice
We allow dogs of all sizes (a crate is set up for your convenience), but due to host allergies, no cats can visit. We have two chihuahuas who have their own fenced in area on the side of the house (which is a good thing because they don't always get along well with other dogs).
  • Beautiful property. I wish we had more time. It was such a fun and relaxing environment. I hope we can return one day. It is lovely.

  • My husband an I have stayed multiple times at this lovely home and plan to return each time we are in the area. The hosts are extremely quick to responded and extremely eager to be of assistance, if needed. We always feel welcome and each time we walk through the door, it’s like coming back home.

  • You will not regret staying at the Tree of Life River Retreat. David and Tammy were excellent hosts - very thoughtful and added special touches to make my stay extra special.

  • If you’re looking for a nice place that’s off the beaten path, this is it! We only got to spend one night at the retreat but it was a wonderful setting, well appointed and the hosts are awesome! Not to mention the sunrise across the river! I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy it as much as we did.

  • David makes booking and using his space so easy. Communication is wonderful, the space is very clean, and it’s a calm and peaceful setting. We loved our stay for a girls retreat and plan to return!

This 3 bed, 1 bath restored brick home is located in Keokuk, Iowa, just 12 miles south of Nauvoo, IL and 66 miles north of Hannibal, MO. Great location for a family vacation. Bathroom upstairs, not suitable for those with limited mobility. We have a new air conditioning system, house stays cool during the summer months. There is only one bathroom so if you have a large group, be prepared to share. There are plenty of extra towels.
When requesting dates, if you need to book a date either side of your reservation that shows as unavailable, send me a message. I block a day either side of a reservation to allow for cleaning but may be able to have it cleaned more quickly on an individual basis. Thanks for looking!
This is a pretty quiet neighborhood. There can be traffic in the alley, so please be careful with small children. You can park on the street in front of the house or behind the house on the grass near the garage.
  • Place was very clean and nice

  • A beautiful historic home! We loved the spiral staircase and antique furniture. Although our travels brought us to Nauvoo, it has handy staying in Keokuk since that is where all the shopping is. Looking forward to coming soon.

  • Great quiet location - just what we wanted while doing many family reunion activities. And great access to River Road for some long bike rides. The bed was super comfy too! We didn’t interact much with our hosts, but they were certainly open and available for any questions or needs.

    Lynn2019-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great location on the Mississippi River and a lovely home. We had a private sitting room with TV, refrigerator & coffee maker. It was very quiet with a comfortable bed. A great place with great hosts.

  • After 10 days of travel I felt like I had arrived at an oasis. The secluded location was perfect for my needs. Everything was clean and the room was well-appointed. Brad and Deanna welcomed me into their home as if I were an old friend. Evenings spent on the patio watching the Mississippi River and a scattering of wildlife were calming. If I ever needed companionship Bentley the dog was happy to oblige. I loved it so much that I extended my stay three times.

    Angela2018-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • This home was great. Brad and Deanna made us feel welcome, as well as our two dogs. Plenty of space for the dogs to stretch out and explore outdoors. The back patio was great, with views of the river. They gave us a great recommendation for dinner as well as some things to do locally. The room was so nice, with attached bathroom and sitting room, coffee maker, refrigerator, snacks. Highly recommend!

    Maryl2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • I had a great suite to myself. I was given a tour of my space and the outdoor space on arrival. They have a friendly dog who kept me company in the backyard. I felt like I was visiting friends. I would definitely return

Emma’s Cottage is close to great views, family-friendly activities, Nauvoo sites and the Historic Nauvoo Temple. You’ll love it because of the comfy bed, the coziness, the river views, privacy, peacefulness and close to everything.. It is good for couples, families, solo adventurers, and business travelers. The cottage was build around the 1940’s . If you enjoy privacy in an authentic environment then you’ll love it.
Please note that during July the minimum stay is 2 night stay. The cottage is an open floor plan.
The cottage in close to the river in a rural setting. My neighbor is antisocial so don't mind all his No Trespassing Signs.
  • Quaint, cute, comfortable, cozy. Guest cottage on a small farm. Near to the Mormon temple and Mississippi River. Sara was a hospitable and responsive host.

    Robert2020-03-04T00:00:00Z

    Marie2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very cute. There is no DVD player. But I believe Emma's cottage had everything else we wanted and needed. The restaurants close down early so it was nice to use the fully stocked kitchen.

Sara was kind, responded quickly to any questions or requests, and provided excellent suggestions. This is a great place to stay!

We are quite proud to be stewards of this historic home. The house was built by Gen Samuel R Curtis in 1850 and served as his family home until his death. President Lincoln both dined and stayed overnight in this home as General Curtis was a key figure in his administration and the Union war effort. Funds from guests are applied back into the estate to aid with restoration and preservation efforts. Longer stays are discounted!
  • Richard's house is beautiful! Large, comfortable, clean, full of great amenities and well located. Richard is super easy to communicate with, tons of local tips, very accommodating and friendly. Absolutely coming back! THANK YOU!

  • Brad and Deanna are lovely people; their place is clean, just as described and located on beautiful property. They were very responsive to messages for same day check-in, had a place to park our Harley for the night and brought extra coffee out while we enjoyed the scenic river view. Everything was clean and the room had many interesting decorative pieces. They gave us a dinner recommendation that was fabulous. We frequently go through Keokuk on motorcycle day trips and would stay here again.

  • The location is beautiful and very peaceful. The views of the river were stunning. The beds were extremely comfortable and we were able to get great rest. Everything is as described so there were no surprises. Clean, comfortable and convenient. But the best feature of this place, by far, is the hosts. They were so kind, accesible, and friendly. They genuinely cared about my experience and looked for ways to make it better and more comfortable. I would definitely consider staying here again if I’m ever in the area.

This is a well kept home in the quaint town of Hamilton, IL. It’s right across the river from Keokuk, Iowa with a beautiful river drive to Nauvoo, IL on the north with Carthage, IL to the east. This brick home is on a corner lot between the city park and the public library. There’s a lot of space to relax and enjoy with family and friends. Great eating places in Keokuk, Hamilton, Warsaw, Nauvoo, and Carthage.
We have a large front yard and a fenced in back yard that includes a fire pit and grill area that you are welcome to use.
  • Great place for a family-everything you need in a great location.

    Wina2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible house! Lots of room, bathrooms were very clean, and kitchen was huge! My wife told me, "take photos, cause I want a kitchen this big someday!" Beds we're on the firm side with plenty of room on the King mattresses. Being able to use a propane grill was a really nice addition for grilling up steaks. Most of the wedding party stayed in a cabin resort near Nauvoo, and several expressed regret when they saw or heard how great our stay in this lovely home was!

Pelican Pegs has a very relaxing atmosphere. It is situated on an acre of land surrounded by tall shade trees, which gives it an air of privacy. The Mighty Mississippi River is 50 feet from the house, giving a panoramic view from the large decks. The room is set up for 2 people (my limit) with one king size bed.

We have snow in the winter, the river partially freezes over and the Bald Eagles come to feed in the spots of open water. They can also be seen in large numbers perched in the trees along the Great River Road. Spring brings blossoming trees, multi-colored wild flowers and mushrooms. Lush green landscapes abound in the Mississippi River Valley. Summer abounds with river activity, warm weather, and a multitude of festivals in all the surrounding towns. Fall is Gorgeous! You will see lots of colorful fall leaves along Mississippi River Drive in Iowa and Illinois. Montrose Iowa Official Website (URL HIDDEN)
  • My jhusband and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary with Pelican Peg and her cat, "Smokey" in their delightfully charmingl cottage on the banks of the Mississippi. We were welcomed as cherished family members. The residence was quaint and adorned with whimsy and a cheery beach house theme. Our quarters were private, cozy and comfortable. Mornings were sweetened with a leisurely tea, delectable homemade breakfast, the rumble of passing trains and the hum of barges on the water. Peg was a passionate advocate of area sights and sent us exploring with the spirit of Mark Twain. The time flew by and we parted ways rested and refreshed with memories to keep us company, until next time!

    Steven2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • I've done many an AirBnB review in my time. How to quickly distinguish this one from most in a single line? Peg's place is the ideal couple's retreat. Personally I think her secret weapon is Smoky the kitten cat. We were visiting relatives serving in Nauvoo. After reading the reviews and Peg's description, we decided her place was worth the 35 minute one-way drive. Peg has lived on the river her whole life and in this home 40 years. She loves the relative seclusion of her location and loves to share it. We are all the benefactors of her love of decorating. I'm reminded of what I'm sure was an off review that claimed Peg's breakfast was nothing to write home about. Rather, speaking of home, we were still working on Peg's breakfast at our dinner table an hour ago after driving the six hours home. Peg lovingly led us out to the patio for two of the breakfasts and we're glad she did. The room and bed are as others have described it. Yes there's a train that comes through between 11:30 PM and 2 AM only a 100 yards from the house. I'm a light sleeper, but the train is early enough in the night that I went right back to sleep on those occasions that I heard it at all. The quiet modern air conditioner is local to the room and allows you perfect control. I had the best run of cumulative nights' sleep at Peg's place in memory. Get ready to have your picture taken to be inserted in her guestbook next to your entry. That's the kind of host you're dealing with. In my skimming of some of the guestbook entries, I noticed several repeat guests. One couple has been coming for eight years.

    David2019-08-05T00:00:00Z
  • This place cannot be missed. Sitting in the ample shade, sipping lemonade and watching the life of the Mississippi River a few feet away is amazing. Peaceful and within a short drive of incredible fun and historic sites makes it a certain winner. Peg's hospitality and friendliness is top-notch. Be sure to have time to relax ...

    Michael2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Pelican Peg's felt like visiting a beloved relative. Peg went above and beyond to make me feel at home, from allowing me to drop off baggage a week early to driving me to the train station in Fort Madison. She even insisted on treating me to dinner at a fantastic BBQ just down the road! This was, by far, the best experience that I have had at any kind of bed and breakfast or guesthouse, and when my wife and I return to Iowa, we will reach out to Pelican Peg. I want my wife to experience true Heartland hospitality, and no one provides it like Peg.

    Craig2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Pelican Peg’s. Location is to die for and we had perfect weather. We drove into Nauvoo each day for activities and wish we could have just spent more time at Peg’s right on the water. Great breakfast each morning too!

    richard2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • I just can’t say enough good things about Peg! She was so knowledgeable about the local area that we rearranged our schedule to see more. Her breakfasts were plentiful and delicious. The day of our departure we had a flat tire, and she pulled out her pump and called to find an open shop. In addition, her home is beautifully positioned right on the Mississippi River. We enjoyed breakfast outdoors watching boats go by. Our private area was spacious and clean with a king bed and our own bath. JUST FABULOUS!

    Jessie2019-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice place to stay. Peg is very thoughtful and I enjoyed spending time talking with her. House is right on the river and has s really nice view and space to go outside and relax. Would definitley return.

  • Peg was such an amazing host! The breakfast every morning was such a great addition to our stay. The place was very clean and was right along the banks of the Mississippi River. We look forward to hopefully staying here again in the future!

"Nauvoo" understandably translates as "Beautiful." It is a renown place of fascinating history, presented through free and family-centered activities. We hope you plan on spending some quiet down-time in the cottage just to draw upon the peaceful persuasion of the place being on the wide, blue river. We have decorated our cottage as we have decorated our previous homes, with a Scandinavian touch. We hope you enjoy the heart-warming, cheerful, and fresh charm of the cottage. Valkommen!
We have plenty of woodland property for you to explore and make all the noise you want, and no other party will hear or notice. We consider our porch our first room, as it has an open view of the wide river right in front of you and plenty of seating. We also have a picnic table there with a gas barbeque. Our kitchen table sits only 6 or 7, but the picnic table is enough for our given guest count. The cottage is compact but open, and fine for families who wish to spend their days sight-seeing the area and come home to it's cozy comfort. We regret our dock went down river some years ago and since then there is no beach left. However, across the street and kitty corner is a relaxing walk along the river on the mowed green grass of the Hammas Scenic Turn-out. You can see why the slips of shore are often called by visitors as "shell shore." The Nauvoo/Hamilton area is renown for its geodes and guests sometimes come just to seek them in streambeds and in the river. We have many around the yard that we have found.
We are located adjacent to a scenic turn-out that offers a nice stroll along the river and picnic tables and invite you to discover "Shell Shore." This portion of the river is located above the only damn on the Mississippi River, and is the widest part of the river, even given the name of "Cooper Lake." You can watch long barges traveling up and down the river in the spring and summer and hear the distant sounds of the coal shoot and railroad across the river. In the fall and winter there are bald eagles who fish in the open area of the damn beside the next town downriver and many can be seen while taking a walk outside the cottage. There is so much to see in Historical Nauvoo, and the downtime in the cottage is just the right ending of a busy day and a cheerful and relaxing way to start a new morning. See the moon over the river in the middle of the night and the shining blue of the river when you sit up in bed in the morning. Again, Valkommen!
  • There's absolutely nothing the host could do more in making your stay comfortable . The sunset across the Mississippi is breathtaking from the front porch! Cant wait to come back

  • This was a clean and cute place to stay close to Nauvoo, IL which was our destination. Six of us stayed comfortably.

    Karlene2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Kim is a great host and was very helpful when we needed some flexibility.

    Kevin2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely place to stay and well worth the price! We stayed in the basement while another group stayed above. With some stairs connecting the two units, noise can travel easily between spaces, so keep that in mind if you are a light sleeper or will be a noisy group. Our neighbors were loud into the night, but this is nothing against the airbnb itself or host. We enjoyed the coke theme and spacious area. We recommend for any group checking out Nauvoo or surrounding areas.

Cozy vintage cottage in the tranquility of country setting, period decorated and furnished to give our guests a relaxed feeling of the place and time represented by the area. We will welcome you with cold lemonade and serve you a healthy breakfast.
Please note this is an owner occupied cottage. Rental pertains to one private guest room with a shared bathroom. Meaning, the bathroom is shared between guests and residents. The location or the cottage is not suitable for guests with handicap or persons allergic to insects. As much as we try to prevent it, this is a country home and one may walk through insects even before reaching the door and some may access the house. So if you are sensitive to country living and smells this home is not for you. But if you enjoy country setting, fresh air, the sound of birds while you have breakfasts and history, you will love staying here. Re built in 1905 on a 1845 Mormon 2 room farm house foundation. An old well dates back to mid 1800s. Our guests experience a true pioneer spirit. Vintage decor goes back to the turn of last century with charm and up to date conveniences. Our guests find comfort in the plush dawn feather cushion on a queen size bed, TV and window unit air conditioner. The extra long slip soaking tub will relax our guests from the day driving or visiting. • Gleydy will take great care of you.

    Dean2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Gleydy is such a wonderful woman! She will take the BEST care of you, treating you to the best breakfasts you will ever eat! Her vast knowledge of Nauvoo is priceless and her home is simple adorable! She even made my husband and I cake to celebrate our birthdays!❤️

    Tiffany2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Gleydy went above & beyond expectations in hosting us! She knew we were coming to Nauvoo to see the pageant performnce -- we did not anticipate that she would reserve great seats for us earlier in the day and then take us to them upon our arrival!! We did not expect breakfast but she had that lined up each morning. Gleydy was very helpful with local tips and suggestions. She is originally from Brazil and has taken to heart the Brazilian saying "minha casa e' sua casa" (my house is your house). We felt more like family friends than paying customers. The room itself was nice ... and larger than I anticipated after reading the word "cozy". Nauvoo itself is so small that any location is a good location. We would stay with Gleydy again in a heartbeat!!

    Marshall2018-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Gleydy's place is perfect for your Nauvoo stay. It is a lovely home that adds character to your visit. We loved learning from Gleydy; she makes great food, is very accommodating, and quickly becomes your friend. The room and bedroom were cleaned daily, and her breakfasts and recommendations were excellent.

    Aleni2018-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • Gleydy is the consummate hostess! She stayed up so late to give me a tour and let me in. She offered her food and kitchen and was so gracious. You will not be disappointed.

    Noël2018-07-15T00:00:00Z
  • This was a delightful place to stay! Gleydy is incredibly generous and fun to talk to. She made us a lovely breakfast and told us all about Nauvoo. The cottage is lovely and it’s a quick drive from downtown. I truly can’t say enough good about my stay there! I’ll definitely be booking again!

    Heidi2018-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a charming place to stay in Nauvoo, then Gleydy's place is it. This home is lovely and is down Parley's street from Old Nauvoo. There's not much to eat in town so you might want to stop in Keokuk before arriving if you are ending up in town coming from somewhere else. Take the scenic route along the Mississippi River!

  • This charming home was the perfect location for visiting all of the church history sites in Nauvoo and Carthage. Close to everything, yet on beautiful piece of property that was peaceful and quiet. Decorated nicely, everything we needed to make our meals and to make our stay comfortable. Sparkling clean! Highly recommend Anne’s place!

    Melinda2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Anne’s place. It had fun, classy decor and was clean and comfortable with plenty of space and a nice layout. The kitchen was well stocked with any dishes and appliances we needed, along with plenty of paper towels, ziplock bags, etc. The bathroom was also well stocked. My kids loved the assortment of games in the game cupboard, and I thought that was a nice touch. Anne messaged us to tell us the home was ready early in case we wanted to check in ahead of the standard time, and she responded almost immediately when we messaged her. The only thing I didn’t love was that the bed I slept in was very firm, to the point of being uncomfortable to me. I am used to a softer bed, so others may have been just fine, but I thought it was worth mentioning since all the beds were on the firmer side. I slept in a different bed after the first night, and it wasn’t bad. The home is in a great location— close to everything, but in a quiet neighborhood. We’d totally stay here again!

    Jennie2019-10-09T00:00:00Z

An off the grid whimsical gem in the Ten Acre Treehouse forest! "The Captains Quarters". This is the 2nd treehouse in rural Nauvoo. A lot of the same touches found in "The Whitetail". The first treehouse here, you will find in this nautical inspired creation. This treehouse is a full 2 story, 400 sq foot, and features second story bedroom, sleeper sofa on the first floor, small kitchen area with refrigerator/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, plates, silverware, cups and a sink!
Upon entering you are treated to the huge map of the world as you look up in the 13' vaulted entryway. A small window seat area with a small collection of old books to explore! The wrap around deck with gas grill provides a laid back environment to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding forest! The 2nd floor bedroom includes 10' vaulted ceiling which provides plenty of Windows for 360 degree views of the forest from the comfort of the queen sized bed, step out on the balcony which features a whimsical "outhouse" with year round compost toilet and a outdoor hot water shower nearly 30' off the ground! (Nov-Apr the water may be shut off due to winter weather)
  • This place is awesome. It’s really homey, the AC & Heat works great. There is a nice stereo in the place that makes you feel at ease. The decorations are awesome and very well thought out. The path to the house is well lit at night with old fashioned street lights. His dog London is the sweetest black lab who will hang out with you all weekend. Bob is a great host too. We got locked out of the outdoor shower & bathroom (tricky bc it locks from the outside) and he came right over and got it open again. He is as friendly as can be! We hope to be back again in the summer time. It was just what we needed to get away from wedding planning stress and just disconnect from everything.

    Erin2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our time in the treehouse & wished we had planned to stay longer! We only stayed one night because we were just traveling through. I highly recommend it & will definitely be back next time I am in the area!

    Sheryl2019-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • Really cool treehouse! It was pretty amazing!

    Priscilla2019-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Bob’s Treehouse is amazing! As soon as we pulled in, we were greeted by his dogs, Paris and London. They were both super sweet and hung around with us off and on during our stay. This place is beautiful and magical. It is tucked into the woods perfectly so you don’t have to hike too far to get to it, but you also feel secluded. There are trails to hike around the forest too! We were able to walk around and see the other treehouse and cabin. The treehouse itself felt like its own little world. It has all the amenities you could want, while also feeling like you’re “roughing it” (in a very fun way). I could not recommend this place more. You really need to see it for yourself!

  • This historic home is so well preserved! We loved staying here and feeling a part of history. We loved the location being out next to a state park with lots of trees turning their fall colors. The hosts were so helpful and kind. They made us feel right at home. We will be recommending to friends and family!

  • We stayed at the Ellis Sanders House is Nauvoo at the end of June. The Innkeeper was very accommodating as well as knowledgeable about the history of the house and the surrounding area.

  • This charming little place is the perfect spot! My 5 week old, my husband, and I came through for two days while visiting Nauvoo and had a wonderful time. Steve, the innkeeper, stayed up well into the night waiting for us to arrive even though he didn't have to. The breakfast selection is awesome, the bedrooms are cute, and if you like history- the house is full of it. Go go go!

  • Brad and Deanna were wonderful hosts. Their place was clean and spacious, and they were both responsive to messages and flexible on the check-in time. We’d definitely stay with them again.

  • The hosts were very hospitable, and had a lot of great suggestions for the local area.

  • On our trip to Nauvoo we found no vacancy causing us to look in surrounding areas. This is how we found Brad's place and we are so happy we did. It was much nicer than I expected. The hospitality they showed us was exceptional. We were made to feel right at home immediately. My wife loved the time she spent conversating with Deanna. The bed was very comfortable (and Im pretty picky about beds), the property and the river view were fantastic. If you are thinking about this as a spot for you, don't hesitate, I am confident you will be as happy as we were.

  • Very friendly and the place was very nice and clean! The back yard has a great view of the river, perfect place to spend the morning with coffee!

  • We were greeted by Brad and a very adorable Bentley (the cutest, sweetest, happiest pugle you're ever so lucky to meet) when we arrived. The room had it's own private. We were welcomed to use their kitchen, fridge, billiards table, TV room, and beautiful outdoor area with a picturesque view of the Mississippi. The fireflies were a magical touch and we even managed to get a video of the local bald eagle resident that resides in one of their pines. I love this place and wished we could have stayed more than one night, I believe I will be booking this place again in the future.

  • Great experience and great people! Place was beautiful!

    Hector2019-06-16T00:00:00Z
  • This was our first time using Airbnb and it couldn’t have been a better experience. Brad and Deanna were lovely, their home was unique and interesting, and our room with an attached bathroom was clean and spacious. We mainly kept to ourselves but when we interacted with our hosts, they were kind and welcoming. If we find ourselves in the area, we would definitely stay here again.

  • This was a really beautiful place with plenty of sleeping room for our big family. It was clean and secluded and smelled of cedar inside! It's a gorgeous little place. Finding a place in Nauvoo that has room to cook (let's face it, there's NOWHERE to eat in this town:) is such a blessing. Carol was always quick to answer any questions we had.
