Set in the South Downs National Park, on a quiet farm, this cosy self built shepherd, surrounded by birch trees and horse fields, is a peaceful spot for a romantic getaway. Impressive views of the south downs from the accommodation makes this a stunning setting, with plenty of gorgeous woodland walks close by, as well as links to the South Downs Way.
This self built Shepherd hut is built with a lot more space then your average traditional shepherd hut. It has a king size bed to climb up to, with a living space underneath equipped with a sofa bed and a table where you can sit back and relax and have a drink whilst looking at the views of the South Downs. There is a small kitchen space with a wood burner and x2 benches either side of the room with storage space underneath. The interior is furnished with its own unique wooden rustic style and quirky lighting, It is also well insulated and can be kept warm over winter with the wood burning stove on. There is a compost toilet 30 meters from the shepherd hut, you will have access to another bathroom with shower and flushing toilet in the main house, which although shared, is not the main bathroom for the house and is very rarely used by others. This is approximately 30 metres from the shepherds hut. A small basic kitchenette area is provided in the shepherds hut with a single gas burner, fresh drinking water, a kettle, cooking pot, frying pan, plates, bowls, cutlery tea, coffee and sugar available. There is also a small campfire outside next to the shep hut with a fire bowl and grill to cook food on also fire wood and kindling is provided. From Friday to Sundays till the end October, at our nearby campsite (3 min walk away) they will be cooking up something delicious for breakfast and evening meals. It’s always over woodfire or charcoal, either on the grill or in the pot. Breakfast tends to be tea or coffee with a bacon/egg sandwich or avocado bagels. • Lovely, quirky and cosy space. Don’t come expecting all mod cons, electricity, WiFi etc. Do come to escape in a really unique location, surrounded by lovely views (and tiny horses!) and hosted by super friendly people. Loved it.

  • Lovely shepherds hut, full of character and thoughtful personal touches. We really enjoyed our stay.

    Gennie2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Emma’s Shepherds Hut is a perfect nature getaway spot. We had a great stay overnight and really enjoyed all aspects of it. It is not your normal stay as there are not the usual amenities (electricity, mains water) but if you are looking to get away from normal life and slow things down - this place is perfect. We went for a beautiful walk in the forest near the hut, and enjoyed cooking over an open fire in the evening. The hut has a log burner for heating and it heats the space up very effectively and very quickly. The ponies and chickens in the field close by were also delightful! I also particularly liked the composting toilet- really clean and well constructed. There is also a regular toilet and shower available for those who don't want to use the composting one. Overall - it was wonderful so thank you Emma!

    Mila2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin warms up very nicely with the log burner! Very cosy space

    Harriet2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time at Emma's shepherd hut. The location was stunning and the chickens were cute! The hut is cosy and comfortable even in the gale force winds we got and we would love to stay again.

    Alice2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had such a great time at Emma's hut, away from it all. It's such a special place to stay, surrounded by nature. It really makes you appreciate the beauty of its surroundings. The hut was sparkling clean and had everything we needed for an amazing couple of nights. Host was great and very approachable.

    Emanuele2019-10-22T00:00:00Z

A beautiful original Granary on a small farm just outside Petworth is now a welcoming double studio with en suite shower room The Granary is perfectly located for people wanting to visit Petworth or events at either Goodwood or Cowdray. The Granary has a super king size bed, a well equipped kitchenette (with fridge/freezer, sink, induction hob, toaster, & kettle) and French doors onto a pretty balcony with table & chairs.
The Granary is very quiet, very private, very comfortable & has beautiful rural views.
  • Cozy and exactly what we had hoped for. Would definitely go back.

    Sarah2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Set well off the beaten track in deepest Sussex, the Granary is one of the best places I have ever stayed in. Despite the filthy weather, the puppy and I had a great time. Glorious views across green fields, a beautifully decorated space and a huge, comfortable bed, make future stays inevitable.

    Emma2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A lot more spacious than the photos made out!

    Cesare2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We read all the reviews for this property and had high expectations. Everyone is right, it is really a beautiful, clean and spacious property. The countryside around is truly peaceful and as recommended by other guests, we walked to 'The Stag' pub in Balls Cross which is an easy 1-hour walk via small farm roads. The Granary was immaculate and such a great space to live in for a couple of days. There is a small (but amazing) hob which we used to cook ourselves meals and breakfast with the eggs, butter, and bread left for us by the hosts! I would highly recommend this place to anyone, especially those who want a quiet getaway to the countryside, away from city life.

  • A great place to stay in a beautiful setting.

    Araminta2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful rural location with stunning views across the countryside. The space was large and exceptionally clean on arrival.

    Will2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Space was bigger than it seemed in the photos which was a nice surprise. Great facilities in a lovely area.

    Connor2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The location is fantastic, close to Petworth, walking tracks and pubs, but also remote enough to have peace while enjoying the views. The Granary's décor is lovely, the room comfortable and the bathroom has a great shower. We enjoyed our 3 day stay and would return without hesitation.

  • I had a lovely stay with my husband, daughter and dog. Very easy to book and check in. The cabin was spotless and very comfortable. It was much more spacious than I was expecting, considering it is a converted horse stable! Such a lovely, peaceful place.

    Bizzy2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Cute little space with a BBQ area outside right next to some horses. Check in and out very very easy and quick and we felt like we had privacy

  • The cabin is lovely so cosy and warm. Very clean and lovely personal touches. Could not ask for more would highly recommend.

    Sammy2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I booked a last minute weekend away here, the pictures looked lovely and it looked like a nice quiet getaway, but when we arrived it was even nicer than we expected. The pictures honestly don’t do justice for just how lovely this cabin is. It is cosy, homely and warm, and has everything you could need for a little weekend away. Right next to the cabin is a horses field, which was lovely in the morning as the breakfast table is right next to the window where the horses are. Around the area there are lots of great national trust properties, the weather was atrocious for our stay, but we still had a great time in the parks and surrounding villages with lots of shops down lovely little roads. Highly recommend staying here as you will not be disappointed, we didn’t want to leave! Thank you!!

  • Pauline’s Shepard’s Hut is perfect! It is very well kitted out with breakfast and all the bits to keep warm! It is super cosy and very easy to get to. We were walking the South Downs Way so it is right en route. You can catch a bus from the end of the road (couple of minutes walk) into Cocking where there are 3 pubs on the bus line. The buses run late too so it was easy to get around. We loved the Shepard’s hut and would definitely stay again!

    Sam2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • The cosiest cabin around, with a splendid view of Cocking Hill and a short bus-ride to the quaint little town of Midhurst. Pauline was so kind to provide a snack bar inside the cabin, complete with drinks, cereal, and porridge.

  • A little haven in the countryside. You can expect well appointed, decorated and furnished accommodation. Spotlessly clean, cosy, quiet, comfortable and bright. We visited in March with awful weather; it was cold, windy and rained a lot. But once inside this little cottage in Julie & Alan’s delightful garden, you will not be concerned with the weather. It must be even better in the Summer months when you can enjoy the terraced area off the first floor bedroom. Radiators in all rooms, underfloor heating in the shower room, a more than adequate dining area with sink, fridge, kettle and toaster ... just right for breakfast, from the welcome basket provided. The Black Horse local pub is less than 5 minutes walk away and has a lovely pub menu, a real log fire and friendly locals; including Julie & Alan. Nice touches, like milk, butter and orange juice in the fridge. Fresh coffee. Tasteful shower gel and shampoo. They have thought of and provided everything ... very well.

    Steve2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Julie and Alan were very welcoming hosts and the Granary is a perfect Bed and Breakfast location. Comfortable, spotless and toasty warm. I bet it's gorgeous in the summer, set in a lovely spot in the South Downs National Park. Would recommend visiting the Roman Villa at Bignor to see the floor mosaics - wonderful evocative history from 400 AD.

    Peter2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Really lovely stay with Alan & Julie. The Granary has everything you need and is right next to The Black Horse Inn which was ideal and Petworth is an easy walk away. It was spotlessly clean and comfortable and Alan and Julie even left a birthday card which was a lovely touch

Julie was really easy to communicate with and was really helpful when our cab couldn’t find the place. The place was sparkling clean, we had a great breakfast and chocolate cookies :)). It was a short walk (15mins) from the main town and a short drive from Pulborough Station

  • The place is idyllic and has a magic feeling. We spent the best weekend ever, the sound of the stream and the beauty of the place is something we never experienced before. The hut has everything you wish for with all the amenities and comfort. Emma and her husband are the perfect hosts and they made us feel at home the whole weekend. They provided us with all the information we needed as well as catering for us with a delicious breakfast in the morning. They are very friendly and gave us precious information on the walks and the surrounding area . Among all places we have visited throughout England I would definitely say that this is the one which stole our heart and we would recommend to anyone looking for peace and beauty. We will definitely be back!!

  • Emma was great host. She and her family went above and beyond to help us out when storm Dennis hit. Beautiful hut, with everything you would need. Watching the chickens roam around and an appearance from a local pheasant was lovely to see. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

  • We spent a lovely night at The Hut with our dog and everything was fantastic. Great local tips, and thoughtful touches - breakfast was great - everything you need in a neat little package. A pretty and comfortable place to stay with hosts who were communicative and attentive without being intrusive. Thanks for a lovely stay!

'Maggie's Hut' is a cosy shepherd's hut set in a beautiful garden. It has a comfortable double bed and a woodburning stove for colder winter nights. The Swan Inn, (currently open!) a family run 15th century pub is a short stroll away. Perfectly located for the South Downs National Park. Also near Goodwood for its famous Festival of Speed and Revival and for exploring Chichester, Petworth & Arundel. Separate outdoor hot shower (**see note below) and 'Eco' composting loo are adjacent to the hut.
If you want to get away from it all, unwind, switch off and relax, Maggie's Hut is the perfect venue. Our bijou and perfectly formed hideaway is set within a pretty garden in the downland village of Fittleworth. It is within a short stroll (literally 2 minutes!) of the fantastic Swan Inn, which serves fine ales and delicious home-cooked food. (Do check their website for opening times as it alters opening hours in winter). There are other good pubs within a short drive or a good walk. The hut is extremely cosy and warm in the winter whilst also managing to stay cool at the height of the summer, shaded by the surrounding trees. There is a very comfortable double bed with crisp cotton sheets, a cosy duvet, pillows and fluffy sheepskins. 'The Bamboo Loo' is a separate outdoor 'eco' composting toilet adjacent to the hut. There is a private outdoor gas shower with instant hot running water. Showering outside is a unique and special experience and even in the colder months our guests enthuse about it! We provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Bathrobes are also provided. *** In winter, when the temperature drops below zero, we may have to drain the shower to prevent burst pipes etc. This means the shower isn't usable, but hopefully only temporarily. Once the temperature rises we will turn it back on again *** The hut has a small wood-burner. We will give you enough kindling and logs to keep a cosy fire going for those cooler nights and mornings. There is all you need to make cups of tea (herbal teas are also provided) or enjoy a cup of our own delicious ground coffee, 'Maggie's Hut Blend', which has been especially created for us by our next door neighbours at The Honeybee Coffee Roastery (a decaffeinated blend is available on request, in advance). You will find wine glasses, tumblers, plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery. There is a mini fridge, kettle and a toaster. Breakfast cereals are provided and you will find milk and water in the fridge. If you would like our special breakfast basket delivered to your door in the morning, containing warm croissants, fresh bread, butter, jams, yoghurt and fresh orange juice, ** please enquire/ request at time of booking as sometimes this is not available ** (an extra £7.50 per person per morning is payable for this). Hopefully the weather will be good enough for you to eat outside but if not, there is a fold-down table and chairs within the hut. Maggie's Hut also has mains electric and two double power sockets. Secure parking available in our private driveway. There is also undercover parking for an open top car or motorbikes. The recently opened 'Fittleworth Village Stores and Cafe' is about a 10 minute walk away. * It has a wide variety of produce, much of which is local. It also has a lovely café serving breakfast, snacks and light lunches. You can also buy alcohol, newspapers and it has a post office where you can withdraw cash. * revised opening times (mornings only) due to Coronavirus, cafe is currently closed. Food deliveries available.
There is plenty to do and see in the area, and something for everyone. There are some lovely walks straight from the front door, and slightly further afield lie the beautiful South Downs with the well known walkway and many other beautiful routes. Fittleworth itself sits within the South Downs National Park and boasts two commons. We have Hesworth Common, which is just a 5 minute walk from the Hut and is an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty. If you walk to the trig point at the top you will be rewarded with beautiful far reaching views to the Downs. Fittleworth Common is a 10 minute walk away and is smaller and quieter (known mainly to the 'locals') than Hesworth but also has lovely views and a collection of unusual trees. The Lord's Piece at Coates Common (2 miles): A beautiful piece of parkland which looks like a piece of the New Forest that has been transported to West Sussex. The historic towns of Petworth, Arundel and Chichester are all within striking distance. We are also conveniently located for Goodwood with its very popular Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting. You might like to hire bikes from 'Chalkpit Trails' based in Amberley. They have a good selection of mountain bikes and E- bikes and can advise on routes. Other places of interest: Petworth House and Park (3.7 miles): Magnificent National Trust House set in a beautiful 700 acre deer park landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalized in Turner's paintings. The nearby town of Petworth is worth a visit too for a mooch about the shops (there are an abundance of antique shops), and there are a variety of good places to eat and drink. Amberley (6.2 miles): is one of the most attractive of all downland villages. It has a lovely setting; on the east side there is the scarp slope of the Downs, rising up to Amberley Mount with a steep climb up to the South Downs Way . On the south and west sides of Amberley there's the atmospheric River Arun and the wild brooks. The village has its own Castle, and although it's in use as a hotel and wedding venue rather than a good old-fashioned historic monument the castle is extremely atmospheric. Non-guests of the hotel can walk around the back of the Amberley Castle on their way into Amberley Swamp. The recently renovated pub 'The Black Horse' is very popular and worth a visit. Amberley Wildbrooks Nature reserve (3.6 miles): A great haven for birdlife in winter. Amberley Working Museum (5.4 miles):This is an interesting use of an old chalk pit above the railway station - it's now home to a treasure horde of old agricultural and industrial machinery, nearly all of it still functioning. Arundel Castle (8 miles): Founded at the end of the 11th Century, it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for nearly 1000 years. Set high on a hill in West Sussex, this great Castle commands the landscape with magnificent views across the South Downs and the River Arun. The town of Arundel is also worth exploring with a wide variety of interesting independent shops and eateries. Parham House and Gardens (5.8 miles): (please note it is closed during the winter months, re-opening on Easter Sunday 2019) Parham is one of the country’s finest Elizabethan Houses, complete with a Great Hall and Long Gallery. The Gardens consist of beautiful Pleasure Grounds and a four-acre Walled Garden. There are stunning herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden, orchard and a 1920s Wendy House. They featured in The Guardian’s “10 best gardens to visit this summer” The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum (14.7 miles): Historic houses and agricultural buildings dating from the 13th century to Victorian times, rescued from destruction and rebuilt in a magnificent parkland setting. West Dean Gardens (15.6 miles): Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of features from surreal trees to the restored walled garden. Goodwood: House, Hotel, Race Course, Motor Circuit and Aerodrome all within approximately 15 miles of Maggie's Hut and are worth a visit. The Aero Club cafe is open to the public and very close to the airfield and motor circuit so you can watch the comings and goings. Cass Sculpture Foundation (12.1 miles): Visitors are welcome to explore the tranquil 26-acre site, which contain over 50 large-scale, contemporary sculptures and two indoor gallery spaces. The organisation commissions new works and curates dynamic exhibitions every year, featuring some of the most exciting artists working in sculpture today, all within a beautiful country setting. Vineyards: If wine is your thing.... we are lucky enough to have several Vineyards very close by. Most offer visits and tours (seasonal April/May to October) but DO CHECK WEBSITES for opening times and availability as some are more limited than others and often get booked up quickly! Stopham Vineyard: (1 mile) English still and sparkling wines on our doorstep! You can even take a lovely cross country walk from to get there. Tours and visits available. You can include lunch at the White Hart Pub, situated on the river. Do check opening times. Nutbourne Vineyard: (6 miles). A family run winery, in a lovely setting that you can visit free of charge and simply enjoy the surroundings. Lovely lake and alpacas! You can also take a picnic to enjoy in the grounds. Tours available for booking too (limited days - check website in advance). Upperton: (5 miles) near Tillington (a picturesque village with a fabulous pub, The Horseguards Inn) A vineyard in another wonderful setting. You can enjoy a glass of sparkling wine on the terrace overlooking the Downs. Tinwood, nr Chichester (13 miles) More delicious sparkling wine to sample at the foot of the Downs. Tours bookable in advance. Langham Brewey, Lodsworth (7miles) An award winning micro brewery. Brewery Tours available. Once again check website for details of booking etc. Bignor Roman Villa (4.4 miles) is the stunning remains of a Roman home with world-class mosaic floors in a spectacular Downland setting. Learn why the Roman owners chose to develop such a magnificent settlement at Bignor in the 3rd Century AD and how they acquired wealth from its location. Open 7 days a week: 1st March – 31st October From 10am until 5pm (last admission 4pm).

  • Can’t recommend this beautiful shepherd’s hut highly enough.... the thoughtful touches, high quality finishes, natural surroundings and welcoming and considerate hosts make it one of the nicest places we’ve stayed (& we’ve stayed in a LOT of places!) Great pub a short stroll away, and the best of the National Park on your doorstep from here.... we would love to come back and spend more time in this wonderful corner of the world :) Thank you Shirley, Charles & Rita!

  • Lovely homely space, private but with local amenities nearby as required. Good walks in the area and helpful maps left by Shirley and family. Excellent host with everything catered to. Lovely woodburner and comfy bed with enough space to get comfortable for your stay. Would strongly recommend for a country retreat or base for a while. A++

  • When I found Maggie’s Hut, I thought just from reading about it that it was going to be a magical place, but it managed even to exceed my imagination. The bathroom facilities are truly inspired. I feel the cold a great deal, so I thought the (in principle, wonderful!) outdoor shower and toilet might not show to their best in the depths of winter. Even with subzero temperatures and frost on the grass however, it was heavenly to bathe outdoors, the water is so hot, and provided the most gorgeous sensation of luxury in contrast with the chill of the air. With birdsong in the morning, and stars in the evening, it felt truly heavenly. The hut itself is perfectly charming, everything cosy and tranquil, and the wood burner does a phenomenal job of heating! We even had to open the (so, so lovely) barn door for a bit of a breeze. Shirley’s breakfast basket was simply the final touch of pastoral charm in this lovingly arranged little hideaway. It’s phenomenal value for money - especially considering the rarity of these sustainable facilities. Composting toilets are so much better for the planet, and in fact so much more pleasant to use!

  • Maggie's hut is perfect for a getaway in the South Downs. The hut gives you privacy and all the amenities you need while still letting letting you switch off for the time you are there. It makes a great base whether you want to drive further afield in the area or simply relax and do local walks which start at the end of the drive way. There are lots of great walks starting from the village, a good pub right on the doorstep (2 mins away!), a lovely cafe up the road and wineries nearby. The eco toilet and shower make this a unique experience and was great fun even in the middle of winter. The cabin was super warm and cosy and you have a lovely space whether you're sitting inside or outside. Shirley and Charles were great hosts, very friendly and with some great tips on the local area. We'll definitely head back to Maggie's hut in future!

    Euan2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • It was an amazing stay. We loved escaping and still can't believe we managed to create a fire that didn't go out immediately! The outside shower was amazing. As someone who always runs cold, there was a slight worry - but you would never know it was December in there! We slept in the most comfortable bed ever and your homemade bread was gorgeous. We will be back to enjoy another peaceful, perfect break. Thank you.

    Hannah2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I had a wonderful weekend in Shirley’s hut. Lovely little touches like getting the wood burner going before we arrived so it was nice and cosy plus homemade flapjack for a delicious snack. Coffee was excellent as was the breakfast which we ordered as an extra. Perfect for a quiet getaway!

  • We booked cabin as we wanted to get away urban city life and wanted somewhere peaceful and we were really tempted by the hot tub. When we arrived, everything was as we had imagined. The cabin was very clean and really cozy and it had all the equipment you could think you would need! The hot tub was the best ever - being in the 33 degrees warm hot tub when it was freezing cold outside was an amazing experience. We played tennis, and again had everything we needed - the views from the court of the surrounding countryside were just beautiful. Petworth is only a 15 minute drive and has plenty of lovely restaurants to try. We would love to come back and stay in your cabin again.

  • Hilary was very quick to respond to our booking and questions before we arrived. The cottage is tucked away with a few others at the end of a long private drive off a minor road, and facing the woods, so very private secluded and peaceful. Everything inside was clean and well appointed and it was nice to find freshly baked bread, tea, coffee and milk on arrival. Our 8 year old daughter loved the extensive collection of children’s’ books. Hilary popped by to introduce herself the day we arrived and was friendly and helpful with great tips for the local area. All in all a very pleasant stay!

    Steven2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • We very much enjoyed staying here. Ours girls loved the toys provided (which we weren’t expecting at all), including a great dolls house! The place is compact but has everything you need, and we were very happy here.

  • A very well equipped cottage in a lovely tranquil location. Warm and comfortable. We loved the wood burner. Hilary and Pete are great hosts and very helpful.

  • Lovely peaceful place to stay. I’d forgotten how quiet the countryside was at night. Well equipped kitchen. Well insulated house. Shower was amazing - great pressure. As the Host has said the wifi is rural. I actually managed to stream programmes pretty easily but it wouldn’t sustain calls and dropped out on occasion. Small price to pay for the serenity.

  • Absolutely amazing stay, we ran out of fire wood and within an hour of messaging to get some more Charlie had delivered it. Amazing Woodlands to be in with lots of different wildlife to be seen!

  • Great location, great host. Highly recommended for a great camping trip.

    Dylan2019-09-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is the second year we have camped here and would definitely recommend any of the camping locations at Charlie's. They are clean, secluded and perfect for a camping weekend with friends

    Sophia2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Charlie’s woodland campsite for 5 nights and absolutely loved it! There was a portaloo round the corner that was always kept clean and fully stocked of toilet roll and soap. The woodland pitch was perfectly secluded giving us the same privacy that you would get with wild camping. Charlie was amazing with replying to any questions we had and gave us tips for the local area. 100% would recommend!

    Rae2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot, each of the camping sites is secluded so no worries about disturbing other campers. Camp sites are lovely and well thought out.

    Emily2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • BEAUTIFUL land, plenty of space inbetween sites, feel like you're the only ones there, (make sure u look up at night, stars are AMAZING). Charlie provided us with plenty of wood and water, and was a great host. We walked down to the river to cool off which was so pretty and the cherry on top!! BEST CAMPSITE!! We'll be back!!

    Rebecca2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great camp sites even when a bit of rain sets in its quite sheltered. Everything taken care of a Charlie pointed out local sites etc. Cheers Dan

    Dan2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • This was our 4th time at Charlie’s place. It’s an excellent spot for a quiet wild camp experience. Charlie brought us wood and water (and extra when we ran out!) and was an absolute star at helping us with jump leads when our car ran out of battery. The site was clean, quiet, and has a nearby portaloo. Other than that, just the sounds of the birds, the occasional cow mooing, and a combine harvester in the distance. Perfect for a “get away from it all” trip. Wouldn’t change a thing!

    Anna2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I loved our stay in the Annex! We arrived quite late at night, nonetheless, Sue greeted us and showed us around the airbnb. The Annex is cosy, stylish and had everything we needed for our stay. We were even welcomed with cookies and sherry, and a soft blanket for our dog - which was a lovely touch! The location is perfect. Lots of walking routes, nearby pubs, 10 mins drive from Sainsburys, near to Arundel etc. My dog enjoyed how quiet the area was. There was a private garden area for him to roam around, as well as a gated dog paddock. Overall, a lovely short stay. Thank you again for having us! We will be sure to return!

    Amy2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Great snug little annex. Only 10 mins drive to Arundel and loads of other spots. Folder full of things to do. Great place

    Carl2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Sue and Tim’s place was really nicely decorated and clean. They were kind enough to lend us their bikes including one electric one which was really fun. The sky at night was clear and starry and the place itself was very cosy, we were given lots of recommendations for the local area and were left cookies :)

Set in the South Downs National Park, on a quiet farm, this cosy self built yurt, makes it a peaceful spot for a romantic getaway. Impressive views of the south downs from the accommodation make this a stunning setting, with plenty of gorgeous woodland walks close by, as well as links to the South Downs Way.
There is a compost toilet nearby the yurt (30 meters) and a flushing toilet with shower in the main house, which although shared, is not the main bathroom for the house and is very rarely used by others. This is approximately 1 minute walk away from the yurt, the only people it is likely to be used by are other airbnb guests from my shepherd hut. A small basic kitchenette area is provided in the yurt with a single gas burner, fresh drinking water, a kettle, cooking pot, plates, cutlery, tea, coffee and sugar available. There is also a fire bowl provided outside the yurt to make a fire or cook food on. (Fire wood and kindling provided) From Friday to Sundays, at our nearby campsite (3 min walk away) they will be cooking up something delicious for breakfast and evening meals. It’s always over woodfire or charcoal, either on the grill or in the pot. Breakfast tends to be tea or coffee with a bacon/egg sandwich or avocado bagels. Dinner is usually grilled meat or fish and salads or delicious stews with gremolata and home-made flatbreads. There are plenty of tables and chairs for a communal feast around the Camp Kitchen, or head back to your own pitch for a private dining experience. Either way, no one needs to be the designated driver home! I will email you the week before your stay with the menu and ask for your orders in advance so we know how many we’re cooking for. Prices are between £7-£12 for adults and £4 for kids. We’ll always try to do a bit more in case the delicious smells lure some late-comers, but once it’s gone, it’s gone! Just please email me in advance if you would like to eat at the campsite. (Woodfire campsite only cooks on Fri and Sat evenings and Sat and Sunday mornings till the end end of September) The yurt is not connected up with the mains electricity but is decorated with battery powered fairy lights (a warm yellow) and there is a battery powered portable lamp which is quite bright. If you need to charge your phones you can do that safely inside the main house where the airbnb bathroom is. There is horse riding available on our farm and pony rides for children :) Tuesday evenings I hold life drawing sessions in a lovely studio space on the farm from 6pm till 9pm pay as you go £10, you are of coarse aloud to leave earlier if you like, tea and coffee provided. no experience needed at all, bring your own drawing materials if you have , if not I provide paper and charcoal. • We had such an amazing time at the Shepard’s Hut. It was a perfect space for two and had everything we needed. The chose the wettest, windiest weekend but it didn’t matter was we had so much fun staying cosy inside the hut watching films on the iPad. We didn’t have a car but it’s pretty easy to get to without one. We got a train from London and one of Sues taxi friends picked us up to take us to the hut. Thank you so much for an amazing weekend. We will definitely be back.

We used the wood burner a lot as it was a great way to keep warm and makes the hut super cosy. Sue was very helpful and a great host. We loved the Christmas treats left out for us on arrival! Sue was there if and when we needed help and left us to relax the rest of the time. There are lots of lovely pubs in the area serving great food and drink. My partner and I are 32 and 27 with very hectic jobs and lifestyles based in London. I’d highly recommend other city dwellers with lots going on to come and decompress here. Read, cook, relax, go to the local town, take in the countryside. Can’t wait to come back!!

  • Amanda was a warm and welcoming host . This is a real home from home ! We enjoyed our two night stay with our large dog enormously ! Amanda is a kind , attentive and really charming host ! Strongly Recommended to other guests .

  • Amanda is a kind host, and check in was easy. My son enjoyed played with Amanda’s well-behaved dog. Our room went out to the street, which was slightly more noisy than expected/hoped, but this was the Goodwood weekend, so more traffic than usual. Would love to come back and explore the “outback” begins the house with Indigo, Amanda’s dog. Amanda also provided some guidance on local food/attractions. A nice stay all in - thank you Amanda!

  • Had a lovely one-night stay at Amanda's. She was there to let us in and make us feel welcome, responding quickly by text when we asked to check in earlier than planned. She offered some local tips for good eats - the White Hart was delicious and would really recommend. My favourite part was the candlelit breakfast she included for us!

They can have a separate room at night. (One lab welcomes with a bark).
Our house is quiet, relaxed and clean. There is a sitting room with books, magazines and a DVD player and large screen, which you can use privately (as we often work in the office or kitchen (unless you would like to have the kitchen free). The kitchen has an Aga, belfast sink, new fridge & freezer, dishwasher and drinking water filter. Washing machine and tumble dryer upstairs. We only use natural/eco biodegradable cleaning products. We have two friendly old labradors, who can be kept separate from you if you wish.
You can walk from the front door straight down a beautiful track with views over an amazing large winding stream, and go up into the forests and fields. There are endless routes with a lot of pine trees, mixed terrain, bridle paths, and far reaching views. The 10min walk into town (Midhurst) is also very pretty, a wide quiet road, which many take baby buggies down as there are wide verges. Down another pretty road there is a really nice large country pub less than ten mins walk away (The Red Lion), which also serves food.
  • This was such a perfect space. Christina’s home is beautiful, and beautifully decorated. The bedroom was very comfortable, as was the bed. The area was beautiful to walk around. We’d love to go back.

    Seren2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • A great getaway from London. Easy to travel to - you can get a train from Waterloo to Haslemere, and then catch a bus straight to Midhurst. The cottage is lovely, and walking trails begin from directly behind the property. Christina was a great host and she has inspired me with her minimalist and sustainable way of living. I would highly recommend if you want simple getaway in a relaxed and homely airbnb!

    Charlotte2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed with Christina for a weekend away. Christina was an amazing host, she communicated with us throughout the process. Once we arrived Christina proceeded to be a great host as I soon found out she shared my passion for photography. We were made really comfortable and the icing on the cake was that Christina showed me her photo book collection and gave me complete freedom to use any of them.

    Bruno2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • The only drawback of this experience was not meeting Christina herself. Her way of sustainable and circular living was a serious inspiration. The place was comfortable, cosy and so minimal, neat, clean, furnished with good taste and thoughtful touches. She was communicative and accommodating. Thank you!

    Ni2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great little place, lovely double bed and a very peaceful location and great host.

    Gavin John2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Christina’s place is beautiful - quiet, comfortable, restful. Perfect for anyone looking to get away from it all. Christina was kind enough to make us a fire in the evening and encouraged us to use candles she’d laid out for us.

    Emily2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time, the place and the nature around are lovely.

    Fela2019-12-29T00:00:00Z
  • A most wonderful place to stay if you can savour the beauty of the artistic details in the house , the purity and hospitality of Christina , if you have a car ( hardly any taxi’s available) and if you ignore the angry neighbor ( please pay attention to the house rules of Christina in order to avoid irritating the neighbor and save trouble for Christina ) . I was here for a yoga retreat ; the perfect spot for “digesting” the days ..

  • Just traveling home from a magical stay at the Hut. We stayed whilst attending the Goodwood Revival. We wanted a unique stay and this was exactly that. Beautiful inside and out, the hut had everything we needed for our 2 night stay. Blankets to snuggle up with whilst roasting marshmallows at the fire pit, beautiful flowers, comfy bed linen/towels and a truly welcoming host. Thank you Lyndsey for a fabulous stay, so sad we had to leave but it’s always good to leave wanting more. We will be back.

  • We had a fantastic stay - warmly welcomed by Lindsay. The location is beautiful & feels really secluded, not looked in on at all & peaceful enough to see deer running across the field on both days we were there. The shepherd’s hut has everything we needed for a wonderful stay. Thank you for a great break.

High View House is a beautiful 19th century stone cottage. What makes it extra special is its location in the South Downs National Park. With its stunning rural views and friendly polo ponies in the neighbouring fields. It’s your very own stylish self-contained ground floor ‘Escape to the Country’ retreat however, with no shortage of fantastic restaurants & adventures on your doorstep. Conveniently located near to Goodwood, Cowdray, Chichester and wonderful beaches on the South East coast.
Your self-contained suite has just been refurbished and is beautifully styled throughout. A historical ordnance survey map wall, wood floors, with luxurious carpet in the bedroom and an original Chesterfield sit comfortably alongside fluffy towels, crisp linen, feather pillows and a generous King sized bed. Comfort is key. Ideal for couples, friends or solo travellers alike. All are welcome to relax and unwind. A Nespresso coffee machine, fridge with a 'welcome pack' of biscuits, soft drinks, water and a choice of red or white wine are all on hand. A complimentary breakfast of granola, yogurt and fruit is on offer or a more substantial option is available (sourdough bread, croissants, jam or local honey at an additional cost on advance request). Think well equipped hotel suite (rather than full catering holiday cottage). There are sweeping views from the garden of the stunning Shimmings Valley and there is a footpath off the property over the field from which you can walk to Petworth town centre (approx. 5/10mins). There you will find a number of restaurants, shops, galleries and amazing pubs. It's always best to book when eating out and we can happily help recommend.
There is so much to see and do in an around Petworth. Petworth itself is a picturesque market town situated within the South Downs National Park, with an wonderfully eclectic and exciting array of shops, galleries and restaurants. Adjoining the town is Petworth House and its 600 acre deer park owned by the National Trust. However, Petworth really comes into its own in July & October where its annual Music and Arts (July) & Literary (Oct/Nov) festivals take place. There are also numerous sporting activities available in and around the area. Horse and motor racing at Goodwood, Polo, fly fishing & golf at Cowdray, wind-surfing at West Wittering, sailing at Itchenor and amazing walks and hiking in the South Downs National Park.
  • This is very close in to central Petworth, and yet it's very quiet, well away from the traffic, and with a wonderful view. Melanie and her mum were both very considerate and welcoming. Everything is glitteringly clean, with beautiful linen and nice touches.

    Alexandra2020-02-21T00:00:00Z

  • We really enjoyed our stay, thanks so much for making us feel so welcome xx love the ground floor where we stayed, thanks for all the thoughtful touches xx Especially loved the view over the fields while we had brekkie in the garden xx

  • This is a gem of a place to stay. The accommodation was sparkling clean with a large and comfortable bed. The bedroom is a good size with plenty of space for luggage with a sofa and coffee table at one end so ideal for relaxing. The bathroom has a great shower and Melanie had added some thoughtful extras including dressing gowns for anyone who may not have one with them. Breakfast was self service with fruit juice, milk, granola, yoghourt and fresh fruit provided in the fridge with tea and coffee available from a machine. This worked really well allowing us to have breakfast at our leisure and coffee sitting in the beautiful private garden overlooking the countryside beyond. This accommodation is very convenient for the town and Petworth House. Melanie was very helpful offering to recommend local amenities. We would definitely stay with Melanie again if we are in the area.

  • What a lovely. On one side with historical value being the former Photo Studio of Mr Walter Kevis in the 19th century (check under history on penthouse Petworth) . Very clean, cosy, beautiful decoration, great location. The livingroom is very spacious, and the light entering from the windows on side and top is amazing (former studio). Location: central location in Petworth, between downtown and Petworth House. Very good. The Lucy helped us with all our questions and treated us very well. We can highly recommend the Penthouse Petworth

  • Preparing our trip Lucy was very helpful giving us good advice regarding eating and taxis in Petworth. The penthouse have the best location and was very clean and nice. Wine and milk in the fridge gave us a good start. If we come to Petworth or southern England we will for sure stay at Lucy’s place.

A warm ,relaxed, loved and lived in creative home that is just that little bit different. our glorious fields are there to be enjoyed and the above ground pool My place is close to parks, art and culture, restaurants and dining, and great views. You’ll love my place because of the ambiance, the outdoors space, the neighbourhood, and the light. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets).
My home is a relaxed and creative home, built in 1919 so it has character, with the added bonus of an above ground swimming pool and our fields at the back of the house with gorgeous walks through direct access, badminton and tennis on the field and breakfast picnics if desired . there is a full size trampoline too.
I am blessed with the most wonderful community at the top of tripp hill, where as neighbours we will often meet on our field. I couldn't ask for a more friendly and supportive network and I am sure you will find that too. the village of fittleworth is blessed with outstanding beauty , walks and a lovely pub. arundel ,chichester .goodwood are all within 20 mins drive with all the fabulous amenities and heritage on offer. there is no shop in the village but a great farms shop 5 mins away.
  • Amanda lives in a beautiful house and the space upstairs where we stayed was roomy with a big, comfortable bed and well serviced. There were little touches throughout which just made the trip seamless. Perfect for weddings at Fitzleroi Barn as it is only a five minute drive away. Highly recommend

    Simon2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Amanda's just for one night for a local wedding. She was extremely accomodating and even managed to fit one extra person in at short notice. Brilliant place at a brilliant price.

  • Amanda is very nice and helpful! The place is warm and lovely. We stayed in the attic room, Amanda helped to make another single bed so the three of us could all fit in. We had an amazing experience looking at the stars from the windows!

  • Amanda was a great host, very welcoming and provided breakfast in the morning. Her place is in a great rural location a short walk to the nearest village. The room was very comfortable and all amenities were provided.

  • Stayed for a weekend with friends as we were going to a wedding nearby. Lovely house to stay in with decent sized rooms and parking. The provided breakfast food was very much appreciated 🙂.

    David2019-04-07T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda is a lovely warm person. We stayed in the top attic bedroom that was very spacious although it doesn’t actually have any door at the bottom of the stairs. Saying that, it was private enough. . Quite purple which is not really my thing but I had the most incredible sleep and woke up feeling amazing.

    Bronwyn2018-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Amanda’s place is such a warm and welcoming treat, we had everything we could have needed and more and felt right at home. It’s a short walk to a wonderful pub for lunch or dinner and the views from the property and around in general are so stunning. Really recommend staying here.

  • Amanda is a lovely host - very friendly and helpful! The home and room is charming with plenty of space, comfortable beds and lots of interesting ornaments throughout. Pretty garden and field at the back for short walks if you want. Breakfast was great for our purposes (cereal, croissants, fruit). The location is also good - right in the middle of the South Downs National Park with lots of good walks, pubs and little villages nearby, although we had a car so I’m not sure how the experience would be without one. A fantastic stay overall, looking forward to coming again.

  • What a lovely little find. We arguably couldn’t have picked a worse date for our night away, we were caught in the midst of Storm Dennis, in my little car that was not equipped for the high winds, rain or rising river levels, but Mary’s hospitality and a the Hay Loft more than made up for this. The Hay Loft itself is such a lovely, unique space. By about 230 we had given up on exploring the local area due to the storm and decided to head back for the rest of the day and night. It’s such a cosy, romantic space that we were more than happy to be cooped up for the rest of the day and night with a bottle of wine. The extra touches and details that Mary has implemented were so thoughtful and really made this a 5* stay, completely worth the money. We needed a warm bath after returning from Petworth, the slipper bath was perfect, ready with bubble bath and fluffy towels and dressing gowns. Plenty of glasses, plates, cutlery etc, a mini fridge and freezer were all to hand. Games, magazines, freeview TV, even hairdryers and shavers. Breakfast is included in the cost and what a spread we had available! Various teas, coffees, croissants, hams, honey, butter. Freshly prepared fruit salad (so sorry we didn’t have time in the morning to eat it!), fruit bowl, fresh milk, bottled water, yoghurts, meats and cheese, bread, rolls, orange juice! And best of all eggs fresh from the ducks and chickens. We had to make an early exit to avoid the rising river, so we took the eggs with us for breakfast at home...lovely!! I’d imagine on a summers day, the little terrace outside the loft would be perfect for a glass of wine overlooking the river, chickens and ducks etc. I hope we can return again one day, ideally in less biblical weather so we can enjoy the walk and local area more. Mary was so friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble, a perfect but non intrusive host, thank you! If you’re looking for a quiet, romantic getaway, absolutely book the Hay Loft.

  • This is one of the best Airbnbs we have ever stayed in - the place is so cosy and romantic. Mary went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect - from an amazing breakfast to extra touches like bath soaps/kits. We we certainly be coming back again. Thank you!

  • We had a lovely night at the Hay Loft. It's a very tranquil spot, and the loft has everyone we needed for a perfect stay. And the breakfast Mary provided was top notch!

  • The Hayloft is very cosy and relaxing. We almost felt as if we were staying in the Swiss Alps!! We had some lovely walks in the local area, great pub food nearby and enjoyed relaxing in the hayloft. The breakfast was just perfect and the hayloft has everything we needed. Mary was extremely helpful. It was a wonderful stay.

  • Short but lovely stay at Mary’s place. Thank you for having us. Was the perfect location for us to get to a wedding in Petworth. We enjoyed the breakfast spread prepared by Mary. We would definitely stay again. Highly recommend.

This is one of two rooms available in our converted barn. Gorgeous downstairs small double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and shower, in a beautiful riverside country village 10 minute walk from South Downs way. Goodwood, Petworth, Arundel all within 15 minute drive. The room has a temper mattress, roberts radio, kettle, chest of drawers, hangers and plenty of quirky artwork. We provide fresh linen and towels. Wonderful cooked breakfasts including free range eggs, and fresh fruit.
The bedroom is located in our beautiful thatched barn which dates back 400 years. Plenty of character and a beautiful garden you can relax in too. We love art and there is plenty to see hanging around the house and in the room. Swell as quirky antiques that we have collected from our travels in Europe.
We live in a beautiful village on the foot of the downs a 10 minute walk from the south downs way. From our front door you can walk down to the river arun and wander to the pubs in Houghton, or Amberley (all a 30 minute walk) or into Arundel along the river path which takes 1.5hours We also have a great pub in the village which is a 5 minute walk.

  • We stayed one night whilst attending a wedding at Upwaltham barns. The place is extremely stylish and beautiful. The bed was very comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. Sammy and Tim were good hosts and made an amazing breakfast. Would highly recommend.

  • Snug and comfortable room in a lovely barn conversion. Excellent breakfast.

    Oliver2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Sammy and Tim went above and beyond to accommodate us. We had a terrible journey on our way to the B&B, and rather than risking us missing the wedding ceremony we were travelling for, Sammy was so understanding and made plans for us to avoid wasting time with check in AND gave us a lift the next morning to get our car from the wedding venue. Our room was lovely and clean and the bed was very comfy. The setting is beautiful and breakfast was very nice too! Thanks so much. We’re already planning another visit!

  • We had a really great stay in the hut. It's a beautiful location - loads of space, water, trees, moss, flowers and birds. The breakfast things provided were really appreciated - everything you could need and really great bread. Cosy bed and surprisingly good shower for a little hut. Walks from the grounds - we walked around the lakes and then on to Petworth. Did it by train to Pulborough, taxi to the accommodation, and just walked everywhere. Thanks for being wonderful hosts Megan and Nev. :)

  • I’ve just spent two wonderful nights in the Shepard’s hut, which is set in a stunning setting, and I’m already planning when I can come back. Honestly, this is a truly magical place and one I recommend without hesitation. If you’re looking to “switch off” and relax, this is the place for you.

  • This was our second stay at the idyllic Woodland sheppherds hut with its fantastic location and lake view. Our host was more than accomadating and helped us out with an extra torch and umbrella on our rainy arrival. We will no doubt come again for another break. The hut itself lived upto our expectations from our first stay with extra bits like localised baked bread, milk, orange juice, butter and cerials. The stylist hut was cosy and warm with two heaters despite staying the coldest day of the year so far! You won't be disappointed staying here!

    Alex2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Megan was a lovely host, showed us to the accomodation and discussed everything with us, covering all the things that we could need. The place was beautiful, great location, lovely finishing touches with the amenities and always hot water and heating (which was good because we went on a particularly windy weekend!). Would definitely recommend a stay here and personally want to come back soon for another little get away.

    Mirran2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • We had an absolutely wonderful time. My husband and I were looking to get away for a long weekend somewhere private and surrounded by nature. The hut and its surrounding were better than what we were even expecting and a perfect stay. We have decided that we will certainly be returning!

    Leslie2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • We had a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend stay in this little gem of a hideaway. The hosts, Meg & Nev, were friendly and welcoming, and Nev was a treasure trove of local information. The hut itself is thoughtfully kitted out with everything you might need for a comfortable stay, no matter the weather or season, from hot water bottles to heaters and umbrellas. We appreciated the delicious breakfast foods provided (milk, bread, cereals and jams along with the tea and coffee) The bird life was a real highlight for us, and we spent hours sitting outside the hut looking out over the water watching the birds (and bats, come evening). There are lovely walks you can take right from the door. It’s the perfect place for some downtime away from the city, and our only regret was that we couldn’t have stayed longer.

This self-contained apartment has its own private entrance and is situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park. At the end of a one mile drive, on a private equine estate near Graffham, this is perfect for couples wanting a tranquil and romantic get away.
A luxurious and peaceful suite of three rooms, the Hideaway is to the rear of our house and is surrounded by woodland and grass paddocks. The interior has an African theme and is complimented by a super king Simon Horn bed with Egyptian cotton linen to match! There is then an open plan sitting room with kitchenette and a modern bath & shower room, equipped with fresh Egyptian cotton bath sheets and hand towels. The kitchenette comprises a fridge freezer, toaster, kettle, mini oven with hobs, all the equipment you need to cater for your stay if you don’t want to visit one of the many local pubs or restaurants. There is parking for your car(s) directly outside the property.
  • The Hideaway is a fabulous place for a chilled or romantic weekend. Lovely inside and a great location for exploring the beautiful Downs and surrounding area

    Paul2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely clean, private space with all you need for a quick getaway. Reached via stairs but set in its own barn you are left inyour own space. The kitchenette is good for basics but the area is a wash with lovely places for breakfast and dinner. The host met us on arival and was extremely responsive including local tips in the informaiton book that really helped. The location of the cottage was excellent with some amazing walks to be had straight from the door, and two easy to reach pubs in the local villiage. Can recommend the White Horse for a posh meal out, and the Hungry Guest Cafe for breakfast in Petworth. Both an easy drive from the cottage.

  • The Hideaway is a lovely place to stay , and for what we wanted the unique location couldn't have been better. It felt very remote and idyllic, there is a wooded area right behind the house where you can hear birds singing. We live in London so wanted a couple of tranquil days in the countryside and Oliver's place was exactly what we were looking for. We were very lucky to have beautiful weather so felt we got to experience the location at it's best. The Hideaway is decorated tastefully and is very comfortable for a few days stay. Oliver gave us a mix of maps and directions which we found fairly straightforward to follow and found the place pretty easily. There's a National Trust walk very close to the property on a beautiful heath land - lots of heather in flower in summer. The cooking facilities are fine for cooking a breakfast or something simple but not really enough to cook a complicated meal.

  • The Hideaway is a gorgeous space set in glorious countryside. It's tucked away and so truly lives up to its name although in walking distance of local pubs and a shop. Oliver is a lovely host and couldn't do enough to ensure we were comfortable, all communication was rapid and comprehensive. I would highly recommend this lovely place, clean, full of character and lovely touches such as fresh eggs for breakfast.

    Sarah2019-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • The Hideaway was clean and comfortable. Really comfy bed and bed linen! Oliver was helpful and the local area was beautiful to explore.

  • Quirky attic style lodgings with homely feel. Very comfy bed and ceiling fans kept rooms cool in the warm weather. Lovely quiet surroundings but only a pleasant 20 min walk to 2 nice village pubs. Handy for lots of surrounding places to visit. Welcoming host with lots of useful information provided. Kitchen space fine for a couple of days but maybe a push for a week
