Places to stay in Buckfastleigh
Beautiful character cottage set on the outskirts of The Dartmoor National Park. A peaceful, secluded hideaway with period features throughout, this tasteful conversion provides all the comfort and style for a truly unique holiday experience. River Garden Cottage is our sister property to our other Buckfastleigh holiday home The Old Stables
A beautiful, 18th Century cottage, bursting with original features, with a private South facing garden next to a river. Positioned in a quite private lane, just off Buckfastleigh high street, River Garden Cottage provides a bright, relaxing, characterful home, ideal for exploring the wonderful Devon countryside by day before returning for cosy evenings in by the log burning fire. Stepping into the open-plan living, kitchen and dining area, you'll find an abundance of exposed stonework, oak flooring and beams, matched with rustic and original furniture and fittings. A short distance from the cottage is a private lawned garden, with a seating area over looking the fast flowing River Mardle. We provide a parking permit allowing use of any of the four near-by town car parks. There is also a private parking space with a narrow access for a small to medium sized car approximately 100 meters from the cottage.
  • What a lovely, warm, stylish cottage with everything you need. A friend and I stayed there to attend a course which is run locally, so chose it to be near to the venue. We were therefore pleasantly surprised at how quaint and pretty the street and this cottage were, so the ideal setting for a country holiday or break . Paul was the perfect host sending a helpful message with lots of details a few days before our stay. When we had a problem with the boiler one morning he responded to my text immediately and within the hour someone was on our doorstep to fix it. We hope to book again for a few nights when we return for the final part of our course in a few months time.

  • Really helpful host, very responsive to messages, instructions were detailed and concise. Could rely on Paul to reply immediately when trying to find local parking or questions about how to operate the amenities in the house. Lovely and comfortable space!

  • Lovely place in the heart of Buckfastleigh. Great open fire. Once we worked out how to use the television we were set for cosy nights in.

  • Pauls cottage is a little gem. It is immaculately presented. The welcome gift of local produce was a thoughtfull touch and all tasted delicious. We experienced some awful weather during our stay but the cottage was always warm, dry and comfortable to come back too. A goods night sleep was always had aswell on the comfortable beds. Will certainly be staying here again.

  • The cottage is in an excellent location for Dartmoor and other Devon sight seeing. The cottage was very comfortable and the wood burner was a bonus on a cool night.

  • Lovely welcome basket, great location, spotless

  • We had a great time in Buckfastleigh. The house is not that big but has charm and makes you feel comfortable. Paul is always there for questions. Surroundings are beautifull. We'll certainly will visit the region in future.

    Martijn2019-08-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was wonderful, spotlessly clean, characterful with all the amenities we needed for our stay. The garden next to the river was a real bonus and we spent a few evenings enjoying the space. Paul was a great host and always available if needed. Being located right in the centre of Buckfastleigh allowed us to enjoy the lovely surroundings, local pubs, shops and a great Chinese takeaway! Our sons loved the skate park and open-air heated lido. If you’re looking for more children entertainment options, the River Dart country park was brilliant and only 15 minutes away by car. Thank you Paul for a wonderful stay and we will definitely see you again!

A clean modern house with two comfortable guests' bedrooms, contemporary private bathroom with bath and shower attachment; towels are provided. Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities in both bedrooms. Please note: The hosts sleep on the top floor of this townhouse. Buckfastleigh lies on the Southern edge of Dartmoor. Our house is near the A38 (Devon Expressway) which serves both Plymouth and Exeter (30 mins each way by car). See map. We have a cat, she is not allowed in the bedrooms.
The two letting rooms and guest bathroom take up the whole of the middle floor of our townhouse and are not let out separately to unconnected people. We sleep on the top floor. Besides the main king sized bedroom we also have a twin bedroom available with two full size single beds, which is very suitable for 2 children or two adults. We could put in a camp bed in that room for a third child if required. Should you wish to make use of it just add extra people when booking. The twin room is at the back of the house and with the window open, some road noise can be heard. Please be aware of this before you book this room. Our windows are double glazed and if closed this is barely audible. We supply a fan for our guests' comfort in the summer. It is naturally a fairly cool room. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided in both bedrooms. Towels provided. A hairdryer can be provided on request. The cold water from the bathroom taps is drinkable. NB If two guests would like a room each then please book for 3 people. Otherwise it will either be the Kingsize OR the twin room.
Buckfastleigh was a bustling woollen town until the middle of the 20th century. In Fore Street there are still a few small shops, a general store - Huccabys which includes the Post Office, and a Co-op amongst others. It is very quaint with some lovely little nooks and crannies and churches of most denominations. There are 3 pubs - The Kings Arms, The Globe (serves food daytime and in the evening 6pm until 8pm Mon - Thurs, 6pm until 9pm Fri and Sat) and The White Hart, within a short walk from our house, together with an eat in/takeaway fish and chip shop, a Chinese and an Asian takeaway. There are two cafes serving snacks etc during the day. A short walk away at the start of Fore Street there is a pub called The Valiant Soldier which closed its doors in 1965 and today remains exactly as it was then. It is now a museum and well worth a visit. Open from April - October. A heated, open air swimming open from May to September. Many eating places out and about for wonderful local dishes, fish and cream teas. Buckfastleigh is in a beautiful part of Devon. Within 30 min drive to the nearest beach. A mixture of ages live in Buckfastleigh who all give you a ready smile when you meet them walking along the road. There are pubs/restaurants serving food a short drive away. Dartmoor Lodge and Abbey Inn to mention two. Nearby is the South Devon Steam Railway which runs from Buckfastleigh to Totnes alongside the picturesque River Dart. Buckfast Abbey. Well worth a visit with beautiful grounds and gardens and a lovely restaurant. We are very close to Dartmoor with the ponies, sheep and cattle wandering around freely. Ideal for walking. The little village of Widecombe on the Moor is not to be missed. Places very close to us are Dartmoor, Plymouth, Exeter, Totnes (nearest station 15mins by car), Newton Abbot, the beaches and towns/villages in the South Hams (Salcombe, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge). English Riviera - Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Teignmouth and Dawlish. Facilities nearby for children include Pennywell Farm, Dart Country Park, Woodlands. All great fun outdoor experiences. Round the corner there is Dart Rock which has climbing walls for all ages
  • We had a great last minute stay. Diane made us feel very welcome. All the information was correct and helpful and the location is very convenient. The room and bathroom was clean, spacious and quiet and the bed was very comfortable so we had a great nights sleep. Thanks again.

Leat Orchard is on the edge of stunning Dartmoor, yet only 30 mins drive from beautiful beaches. Its minutes walk from beautiful Hembury Woods and majestic Buckfast Abbey, 5 minutes drive from the charming town of Ashburton and 15 mins drive from vibrant Totnes. The annexe is spacious and light and surrounded by beautiful nature and tranquility. The perfect place to relax after a day's walking on Dartmoor. Suitable for couples, small families, solo adventurers, and well behaved furry friends.
A woodburner will be installed by the end of February so you can curl up in front of the fire after a walk on Dartmoor....
Being on the edge of Dartmoor we are easy to reach (the A38 is only minutes away) yet you are on the doorstep of stunning walks and scenery. You can also easily access the local towns with their cafes, restaurants and quirky shops.
  • Great location (just a few mins from Buckfast Abbey) and the annexe and surrounding garden is wonderful - lovely log burner kept us toasty all evening. Jo as a host is kind and considerate, perfect for me and my family - i'll be staying here again on future visits to Devon if possible..

    Simon2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely, light and airy space. Jo gave us a friendly welcome with ideas for local walks and dining. Clean and with environmental consideration which meant we weren't overwhelmed by synthetic scents everywhere. Would recommend.

    Jim2019-10-18T00:00:00Z
  • Took my 91 Mum down for a 3 night stay and this met our needs perfectly. As described the annexe is spacious and bright and was lovely and warm. You can park right outside the door so easy to unload and load the car. Great to be able to trot down the road for provisions and have Buckfast Abbey on the doorstep. Very comfortable bed and air bed so we slept like logs. Everything is very well organised by Joanna including a treat and milk on arrival which was very welcome after a long journey. We felt very comfortable in every way and would definitely recommend staying here.

    Jane2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time to Joanna’s place and it was fantastic! A great space with everything you need for a comfortable weekend stay.

    Laura2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely as advertised.

    Julia2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing annex in a quiet location! The annex was amazing and spacious for me, my husband, two kids and dog! The location was fab with beautiful walks to the forest. Buckfast Abbey and the centre were also a short walk away. Joanna, Miles and the kids were fab and made us feel really welcome, we look forward to visiting next time and hopefully can stay for longer!

    Laura2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Joanna's place was a cozy and I would've loved to stay a bit longer. It was clean, had a well equipped kitchen, and was a nice quite space to relax. It was a great location as well and the area had more to explore than we had time for.

    Micky2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful, immaculately clean, quiet and cozy annexe. It was spacious and easily accommodated the four of us( two adults and two children). The location is fantastic with the abbey less than five minutes walk away and the river darts only a short walk - we enjoyed walking along the river and picking blackberries. We also visited nearby towns and beaches, some of which were recommended by Jo The host Jo is one of the nicest people I have come across. She was a superb host. She and her family were welcoming and went out of their way to assist and show us around. It was our first time in Devon and we thoroughly enjoyed because of Jo and her family I am petrified of dogs but the family dog Bramble is so gentle that I even managed to stroke it! We were so lucky to find this place and will definitely be going back. Thanks again Jo for your kindness and generosity

  • Beautiful, idyllic location and brilliant, friendly hosts. Perfect getaway

    Tom2017-12-10T00:00:00Z
  • The Cottage and grounds were even more beautiful than in the pictures! Nick and Judy were lovely and welcoming and also met their ponies, sheep, cats and dogs! Lovely grounds to walk around (even in the unfortunate rain!) and lovely places to drive to near by! Thank you once again!!

    Charlotte2017-10-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely quiet spot close to Totnes and Riverford organic farm shop. We had a great stay!

    Kataya2017-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • One of the most charming and idyllic spots I have ever visited. The cottage is bright, airy and very comfortable and we were warmly received by Nick despite arriving quite late on a Saturday night; his friendliness seemed typical of all the locals. He advised us to walk up to the local hill fort in the woods one morning and it is advice we are very grateful we heeded; a wonderful walk that leads to quite breath taking views. He had another great tip up his sleeve in heading to Bantham Beach and dodging some of the crowds in Salcombe on what was the hottest august bank holiday weekend in my life time. All in all, the perfect place to stay if you want to explore the wilds of Dartmoor and bask on the beaches of Devon all within the same weekend.

    Henry2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is in a wonderful part of Devon with great access to woodland, moor and town, with lots to do on the doorstep or within easy drive. The cottage is simple but with everything you need. A wonderful gas stove in the bedroom/sitting room is perfect after coming in from a wet walk on the moors! Although the cottage is attached to the main house, you have a seperate access and it is approached from a seperate part of the drive so you feel independant. The owners are charming and very welcoming. The situation is glorious, bathed in trees, overlooking an orchard and paddock and we heard not a sound of "modern life" which was paradise. Having said this, "modern life" is just down the road and Ashburton, Newton Abbott and Totnes are all very accessible via the A38. The steam train at Buckfastleigh takes you in to Totnes if you don't want to drive and is great fun. There really is heaps to do in this area and we will definitely go back.

A beautiful industrial Victorian town house. Mid terrace. Our home is full of quirks and character. With exposed brickwork and original floorboards, 3 bedrooms and shared communal garden space. There is a lean to and utilities in the basement. The house is split over 3 floors. One double bedroom, one children’s bedroom with the option of one or two beds, and third single bedroom. The lounge has a small double click clack sofa bed. Situated in the heart of historic Buckfastleigh.
We have children, but there are no stair guards and the stairs are wooden and very steep, please bear this in mind. One room will be cleared of children’s paraphernalia but is decorated as a children’s room. The house is raw industrial decoration so is very quirky. Expect exposed pipes and brickwork.
The town is beautiful, with two parks, one of which has an open air swimming pool, lush! The singing kettle is a traditional Devon tea room, health food cafe, post office, therapy rooms for a massage, a wonderful modern hair salon with beauty rooms, and of course the famous Buckfast Abbey is 15 mins walk up the road. My neighbors are wonderful and friendly. We are on the high street, so sometimes (low) evening noise can be expected. We have swallows nesting opposite which are lovely to watch. There are 3 country pubs within walking distance, ancient caves to explore and the infamous Devon Steam Railway which hosts a miniature ride on railway and the Otter sanctuary. Penny well farm is 5 minutes drive away with a whole day of fun activities.
  • Lovely home, we had a great stay

    Helen2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • Mary’s home is simply wonderful! We felt so at home in this beautiful, cosy and quirky little townhouse. Travelling with a child was made 100 time easier because Mary kindly left out some toys and books, which kept our little one entertained. The town is so cute and we loved the little shops. Definitely recommend.

  • This sweet cottage is the ideal base for a short break in Devon. In 3 days, we explored Dartmoor, visited Dartington, Totnes and Dartmouth and enjoyed a bracing walk along on of the amazing nearby beaches. Buckfastleigh itself is charming and the local area is packed with interesting places to visit. We’d recommend the cottage for a couple or family with kids over the age of about 5.

  • Fantastic place to stay on the edge of Dartmoor. Loads to do even if the weather is poor. We kayaked, visited Dartmoor Zoo, went pottery painting, visited Dartmoor jail museum and the Otter sanctuary. Good for kayakers with a basement to store kayaks and dry kayak kit out in. Also very eco friendly house/ owner and wonderful bread and milk (in glass bottle) were waiting for us. Thanks for a fabulous stay.

  • We really enjoyed our stay. The house was lovely and had everything that we needed.

  • We loved our stay at Mary’s modern, rustic home. The kids loved it too. Mary was extremely helpful, recommending great places for us to go explore, which we did. This cut down on us wasting tine, trying to work out where best to take our young ones. We loved the special touches on her home and feel that it had everything we needed for our short stay. Thank you so much for your warm hospitality and kindness Mary. We would definitely recommend this home to anyone wanting to taste a piece of Devon. Thanks again xx

  • Great design, fantastic bathroom, very clean and tidy and perfect location for exploring all parts of Devon, inland and by the sea!! Mary is very quick to respond and left lovely touches in the house for us such as local tips and leaflets for the surrounding attractions! Would highly recommend!

    Becky2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • Do not pass this home up.. Mary was lovely and made me feel at complete ease (first timer ha) always responding to messages and Mel was also super lovely. Mary’s home is beautiful, relaxing and has a bathroom made of dreams. We felt at complete ease and very much enjoyed the details of the house. It is situated in a lovely village and close to some great days out. We can’t wait to stay again.

The house dates back to the 1890's. There are views towards Dartmoor from the back of the house. There is a small courtyard garden with table and chairs, chiminea and BBQ. There is a larger garden to the front of the house with 2 hammocks and a trampoline. Buckfastleigh is a small moorland town with great access to the A38, the moor (15 minute drive), the river Dart (5 minute drive) and fabulous beaches (half an hour drive). The pretty town of Totnes is a 20 minute drive away.
Buckfastleigh has a small collection of useful shops - a Co-op, a boots, a health food shop and an excellent fish and chip shop, all a short walk away from the house. It is a very friendly town.
  • A beautiful calm house with wonderful friendly hosts

  • We loved staying at Maria's - wonderful hospitality and at the same time totally respectful of our space. We loved the loft room with roof windows looking over both sides of the house. And meeting her son and dog was a treat. We can't speak highly enough of our stay there.

    Ruth2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Maria's place. At the time we were there we had the whole cottage for ourselves. Own bathroom and breakfast included. Mary is very friendly and welwilling to help you before and during your stay.

Two bedroomed cottage on the edge of Dartmoor. Loads of character, history and interest nearby. You will have the whole cottage to yourself. It is situated in the middle of Buckfastleigh, close to shops and facilities, to Dartmoor and Dartington and many other places of interest.
The accommodation comprises sitting room, kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms and a small sunny yard at the back. The cottage is adequately furnished and equipped but is perhaps a little scruffy in places! The stairs to the first floor are steep so the cottage is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. I ask that people do not smoke inside the house.
Buckfastleigh itself has lots to explore - steam railway, butterfly and otter sanctuary, pub frozen in time, Hounds of the Baskervilles connections as well a an open-air but heated swimming pool.
  • Very nice house with many great facilities. The stairs ARE very steep, as mentioned in the ad! It's a really well located and looked-after property.

    Christine2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed here for a weekend stop for a wedding near by. Hilary was superb with contact and very prompt with any questions. The cottage is lovely with everything you need. Thank you so much for having us we had a lovely stay!

    Amy2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in Buckfastleigh was perfect. The cottage is very well located, next to a supermarket; to Exeter and into Dartmoor it only takes around 30 minutes by car. The cottage itself is cosy, has a very well equipped kitchen and everything was very clean. Communication with Hillary was excellent. We can highly recommend a stay and would definitely stay there again.

    Hartmut2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful little Cottage in the heart of buckfastleigh. Me and my children had a wonderful stay. It's tiny door led us into a cosy home with everything you could need. I would love to visit in the winter and make use of the log fire! Hilary kindly left us some jams, bread etc to save us dashing out for food (although the coop is so close it is very easy to get groceries.) And the bath....oh the bath is glorious!

We’re on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor and near lovely beaches. Our house is a detached Victorian house with a pretty garden and plenty of space for parking. Buckfastleigh is equidistant between Exeter and Plymouth and close to many tourist attractions.
  • Sylvee was very patient as we turned up later than arranged and left last minute. So apologies for my poor punctuality! The house was splendid and we felt very welcome. A perfect stay! Thank you Sylvee.

    Mark2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • Sylvee was very nice, kind and hospitable and gave us handy tips along the way. Would highly recommend.

  • Sylvee keeps a lovely house which was richly decorated for Christmas. We have returned to her because of her warm welcome and the great comfort she provides. The house is conveniently situated for Dartmoor and the surroundinf area in a quiet location on the outskirts of Buckfastleigh.

    Alison2019-12-04T00:00:00Z
  • Warm hospitable welcome to Sylvee’s home. Flying visit so didn’t have time to explore beautiful surroundings but would certainly go back.

    Sarah2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely friendly family home. The bedroom is roomy and comfortable, the welcome warm and informal.

    Alison2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely old house full of character, far enough from the main road to avoid the traffic noise, but still very convenient. Sylvee is a lovely host who even got me a hot drink late in the evening when I arrived. Tea and coffee makings in my room and cereal, fruit, toast breakfast waiting on the table downstairs when I got up. Perfect venue for canoeing/kayaking the Dart nearby.

    Dave2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I had a wonderful stay at Sylvee’s Victorian house. The twin room we stayed in was warm and the beds comfortable. Being able to use the kitchen was an added bonus too. I would highly recommend Sylvee’s place as a base for exploring Dartmoor National Park :)

Welcome to the Coach House at Whistley Hall, a converted 18th century Coach House in the heart of the ancient Stannary Town of Ashburton. Detached and self-contained, our cosy and tasteful accommodation stands just in front of our house. Ashburton is a beautiful town nestled right below Dartmoor and a short drive from the stunning South Devon coast. This is the ideal place for a quiet break, week exploring the local area or somewhere to stay while visiting Ashburton's renowned cookery school.
The Coach House has its own separate entrance, which leads into the hall and on into the kitchen. The kitchen has a range-style oven with a gas hob, fridge freezer and a dining table and chairs. It is well stocked with cooking equipment, a range of teas and ground coffee. The bathroom is fitted with a shower. Upstairs there is a light and airy sitting room with sofa and sofa bed, which can be made up in request. There is a TV and DVD player, a range of books and games. The bedroom has a double bed, with a choice of summer or winter down bedding depending on the temperature.
Ashburton has several great pub, restaurants and some fantastic local shops.
  • My stay here was short but sweet! The little cottage is lovely in every way, exactly as described. Great location literally a stones throw from town, communication was easy and welcoming. Would stay again on return to Ashburton!

  • The Coach House is an excellent space for an independent stay in Ashburton. Beautifully done up, comfortable and spacious for a couple. The only limitation is that it's directly on a road with no garden, but the road isn't very busy and the noise didn't bother us. The hosts were friendly, accessible and helpful. I recommend it!

A peaceful, simple and compact home near the centre of Buckfastleigh and within walking distance of the heated open air pool. Well equipped, with off road parking. Glorious Dartmoor, vibrant Totnes and untouched coastlines are all on our door step.
Like many properties in Buckfastleigh this is an 'upside down house' with the living space located upstairs and the bedrooms located down stairs. This set-up means the living space benefits from more natural light. The downstairs was built in the 15th Century with striking stone walls while the upstairs was constructed in the 1980s giving the house a quirky feel. The house is comfortable, but rustic with simple decor, but not a 'show home'. There is a double fold out floor mattress that can be used upstairs in the living room. This is easily stored in the adjoining utility area.
Dartmoor is on our doorstep within walking distance, while beaches like Bantham and South Milton Sands are a short drive away. Approximately 30 minutes from both Exeter and Plymouth ideally situated near the A38.
  • A really nice place right next to Dartmoor! Buckfastleigh is a lovely village and the house is really close to the shops and city centre. We had everything we needed and enjoyed our stay very much!

    Aude2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Well equipped and homely in a fabulous location to visit both the moor and villages along the Dart. Everything we needed.

  • A lovely stay at a beautiful house. I was visiting my dad with my siblings in the local area. We stayed at Louise's for 4 nights. She responded really quickly and mentioned that the house has no essentials guaranteed which was really useful - we packed our own sheets and duvet covers and pillows and had a really lovely night. Louise has furnished her place with a wonderful style and the upstairs living area was very comfortable. We cooked in the house for most of the evenings and this made our stay much nicer. Shower/bathroom was great. House has its own parking space which was a great although off road parking is available if you can find it. Thanks for having us!

    Safa2018-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay and it was so conveniently placed for visiting Dartmoor. It had everything we needed and more.

    Clint2018-08-17T00:00:00Z

    Bernadette2017-10-25T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place to stay, great amenities and location, would happily stay again

    Emma2017-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Louise's Dartmoor Hideaway. The layout is quirky and attractive and the location is great for beach trips (under an hour's drive to a whole range of beaches) as well as even more local walks on Dartmoor. (Also recommend walking/running in nearby Hembury Woods, only a mile or two from the doorstep.) On arrival, the place was very clean and very comfortable - we quickly felt at home there. Louise's communications were clear, prompt, friendly and helpful. A few reviewers have alluded to a "smell" and one or two have said it smells "damp". If there is a smell (and if there is, it's very subtle and not at all intrusive) then it's certainly not due to damp, and is nothing like the smell of damp. (I've experienced damp accommodation and this most definitely is not amongst them!) If there is a smell at all, then it's the rather beautiful smell of the ancient stone, of which the lower part of the house is built. For me, the ancient stone and its history added to the character of the place and made it even more special. highly recommended!

Delightful cottage situated in the very popular Dartmoor town of Ashburton offering cosy accommodation, great for the Ashburton Cookery School or exploring Dartmoor and within easy walking distance of the town which has numerous restaurants, delicatessen, cafe's, Coop store, Artisan bakery and much more! The cottage has a well equipped kitchen, sitting room with wood burning stove to cosy up to on chilly nights, bedroom with double bed and shower room adjacent.
The cottage provides cosy and welcoming accommodation for our guests to enjoy. The wood burning stove is available for our guests to use on colder nights and the first basket of logs and kindling are included in the accommodation price. Bed linen and towels are all included and we are happy to put a pint of milk (on request) into the fridge so that you can make a cuppa on arrival. To the rear of the cottage is a small sunny courtyard for guests to enjoy with Bistro table and chairs. The cottage is within easy walk to the town with all its amenities, where there are numerous cafe's and restaurants, shopping facilities and takeaways, antique shops and much more to explore. Transport connections are excellent, with regular buses running to surrounding towns and A38 Devon Expressway just minutes away. The beautiful Dartmoor National Park is a short drive from the cottage where there are numerous beauty spots to explore (don't forget your walking boots!)

  • Really cosy cottage. I work locally so was great to be able to walk to work. The cottage was bigger than I expected and very cosy. I was not expecting the stairs but was not an issue. It felt like a home from home. Highly recommend.

  • Jasmin Cottage is just perfect for a couple visiting this beautiful area. There are nice little extras, which we don’t always get with Airbnb like tea bags, coffee, sugar, hand wash, tea towel, washing up liquid. It’s about a 5 min walk into town & there are lots of individual shops, cafes, plus 2 small supermarkets, an excellent fishmonger, butchers & deli. It is quite a hill for those not so fit but it’s manageable. We visit Ashburton a lot due to our daughter living there, so will definitely be returning - best place we’ve found so far.

    Julia2020-01-23T00:00:00Z
  • Jasmin Cottage is a lovely cottage. Clean, well appointed and maintained and the location is ideal both for visiting Ashburton town centre, and also seeing more of the wider surrounding area. Angela is an excellent host.

Fernworthy is my two bedroomed apartment, central on Fore Street, in the heart of Buckfastleigh. After a long day out on the moors, at the seaside, or wherever your stay might take you. The feeling of having to drive out for a bite to eat or having to take a long hike to the nearest pub, might not be your idea of a holiday. Well if you stay at Fernworthy everything is on your doorstep.
Guests have the entire apartment to themselves. A cobbled courtyard leads to your own private entrance. The bedrooms are both at the rear of the property and we have always found them very quiet and peaceful to sleep in, even considering we are uber central. Our space offers a king size double bed in the main bedroom with good sized built in wardrobes. In our second 'cosy' bedroom there are childrens bunk beds and a small chest of drawers. Adults should not use these beds. The corner sofa bed, in the lounge, pulls out to a 4ft bed. The kitchen is fully stocked for self catering is you so wish to do so. We have a washing machine and drying areas. The apartment has central heating but no fireplace :( We have a music system where you can use CD's or stream music onto. There's books about the local area provided for your perusal. All we ask is they are left as found, on your departure. The porch area is large and there is ample storage for hiking gear/bikes/scooters/ pushchairs. My place is serviced by a local professional cleaning and laundry company, their employees use the Astonish range of cleaning products. Astonish focuses on minimising the organisation's environmental impact and has an ongoing commitment to running an efficient, environmentally friendly operation. Great for their staff, our guests and Earth!
Cafes, the organic shop, pubs and convenience stores are all within a 2 minute walk from the apartment. The Valiant Soldier Museum is next door - the pub “where time was never called”. It closed its doors in 1965 and was left untouched for decades. Now it’s open to the public as a time capsule of life in the post-war years There is a public open air heated swimming pool at Victoria Park (2 mins away), where you will also find a children's play and skate park. Buckfast Abbey, famous for its Tonic Wine, is within walking distance, however a bit of a hike, if you didn't fancy the walk, parking is plentiful there. Pennywell farm is a short drive away and gives the little (and big) ones their chance to get up close with the animals, we love it! You can cuddle miniature piglets and enjoy a wide range of adorable animals. Perched on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, the countryside surrounding Buckfastleigh boasts plenty of walks with stunning scenery including the tranquil River Dart with secluded spots that make the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing picnic or dip in the river. A trip to explore the moors is also a must with tors, ancient woodland and various settlements to be discovered. Another fascinating link to the past can be found up Church Hill where the graveyard of the ruined church houses the extraordinary tomb of Squire Cabell whose wicked life inspired Conan Doyle’s most famous novel Hound of the Baskervilles. Walk to Buckfastleigh station and hop aboard the South Devon Steam Railway. The steam train puffs its way through the beautiful countryside on a journey to Totnes, giving you a completely different view of this corner of Devon. Buckfastleigh is a unique place to live or visit, with so much to do. A great base to explore beaches, rivers and Dartmoor nature.

  • We spent three nights at Jennifer’s place. Very comfortable apartment and well equipped for self catering. It’s right in the centre of Buckfastleigh, with pubs and a supermarket all within a very short walk. Communication with Jennifer was great and she was very helpful.

Sweet little period cottage set right in the middle of town. Has log burner, central heating, secondary glazing on windows and lovely new carpet so very warm and cozy. Small sunny courtyard through the kitchen which guest are welcome to use . The whole house was recently rennovated so benefits from modern bathroom with separate large shower and bath. Gas hob and electric oven in kitchen. Currently there is no tv at the property but I am working on sorting this. Wifi is good and reliable.
  • We loved this Cottage. Very clean with lovely decor and furnishings. Perfect for our family of three. Buckfastleigh is so great for kids. So much to see and do. My daughter did not want to leave. Juliet was very helpful and quick to respond to any queries. We would definitely recommend this cottage. 100%. We will definitely be back!

  • A lovely little cottage that is definitely a hidden gem

    Chris2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is bigger than it looks on the photos, and parking is not a big problem. Very convenient for everything in the town. Juliet was easy to contact and always got back to me quickly.

    Tim2019-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • This house is a gem. For our little family of 3, it was perfect and would happily recommend and rebook in a heartbeat. The communication was first rate and the place comfortable, homely, welcoming and with all of the amenities we could wish for.

    James2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • This house is charming and cosy but manages to be spacious at the same time. Super clean. Juliet is a great host, keeping in touch and making everything really clear and easy. It's worth mentioning the parking. It may look like it's an issue for some people but you can park outside if you're lucky. If not the pay and display car park is literally a stone's throw away. We used it - its very £reasonable during the day and free all night from 6pm to 9am. In all, I think we spent £1.20p during our stay. There are a range of shops for basic needs 3 mins walk away. I don't usually leave such a long review but our stay, although quite brief was a gem of an Airbnb.

    David2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place. Juliet met us personally and responded immediately to any questions. It’s a good space, very well located for the many joys of the S Hams and Dartmoor.

    Sarah2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay at Juliet’s sweet little town cottage - very cosy, comfortable and clean!

    Charlotte2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful spotless cottage in the centre of Buckfastleigh. Ideal for a couple, or staying with an older child. Small but well equipped kitchen and bathroom with an amazing shower. Great natural light throughout with comfy living area. Limited on street parking or pay and display just 50m down the road. Good communications prior to arrival and key pick up was very easy. Would 100% stay again.

Your hosts Sarah and Joe look forward to welcoming you and are usually at hand to answer any queries.
Being situated on the fringe of our the town, guests will enjoy all that the moor has to offer yet still have the benefit of being able to pop to the bakery in the morning to collect the milk, papers and a fresh loaf of bread.
  • We visited for our mini moon and the care and attention to detail Joe and Sarah gave was amazing, they’d even written our wedding date on the window! Fantastic hosts. The Hayloft is beautifully decorated, cozy and well equipped - also best bath I’ve ever had! We will certainly be returning and will recommend to anyone for a romantic break on the edge of Dartmoor.

    Jessica2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • A stunning place to escape and relax. The attention to detail and overall design of every-room is truly special. We will definitely be back, and recommend you book your stay asap!

    Louisa2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • The Hayloft is every bit as exquisite as the reviews and pictures tease it to be. Book it! Go! It’s such a treat! We were extremely impressed with the layout & attention to detail in the fixtures & fittings & The Hayloft comforts are extraordinary. From the paintings to the hot water bottles, the organic toiletries to the recycling facilities.... & a Christmas tree in the bedroom! Sarah & Joe really know what they’re doing in providing such a luxurious hideaway. Thanks for coming over to welcome us Joe, really appreciated your warmth after our late arrival. Would love to stay at The Hayloft again.

    Hana2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • Joe and Sarah's place is wonderful ... a really easy, homely, yet stylish place to unwind, so welcoming and christmassy with such thoughtful and generous touches that would lift anyone's spirit. Loved Sarah's art, loved the design of the space, loved the gorgeous aromas as soon as we stepped through the front door as well as the beautiful essential oil shower products. It all made us feel so pampered and refreshed .. a needed get away and although ridiculously close to where we live, we felt restored .. no need at all to go far away!

    Wendy2019-12-14T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic cosy, stylish and well equipped barn conversion. Would definitely recommend and would love to come back.

    Rory2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed the three-day stay at the Hayloft very much and felt (almost) at home: very tasteful and with passion - down to the smallest details - equipped hideaway, including all the technical amenities. Even a garage space is available. Very nice hosts, enough privacy. Central location - thanks to direct motorway access - for trips throughout Cornwall (radius 1.5 hours).

    Vo2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • This a fantastic place to relax, so stylish and comfortable, we returned for our second visit this October, although the weather was not great which limited some trips out, but we really enjoyed chilling out in the snug kept warm from the wood burner, joe and sarah really have thought of everything, some lovely touches that make you feel very comfortable with lots of luxury, I am sure we will be back again for another visit in the near future

    Darren2019-10-01T00:00:00Z

My cosy 17c cottage is tucked in a quiet cobbled courtyard in Buckfastleigh on the edge of Dartmoor . Decorated in a vintage/ shabby chic style . Easy access to both shops and good walking. There is a car park 2mins away, bus stops close by and a steam train to Totnes.
Downstairs is a sitting room kitchen diner, all in one room. Upstairs is a single room, (the bed is higher than an ordinary bed, which may be a problem for very small children.) There is a pretty double room. Both mattresses are good and comfortable. The bathroom has a nice new shower bath Allergy advice. My cat will be living in my workshop whilst the house is rented out, but usually does live in the house. I use eco friendly cleaning products and washing powders.
Buckfastleigh is perched on the edge of Dartmoor it is an ancient town that was famous for its manufacture Of wool. It has a butterfly and otter sanctuary, and steam railway.Buckfastleigh abbey is nearby. It is easy to get to as its just off the side of the A 38. Positioned between exeter and Plymouth. There are many lovely walks you can do from here.
  • Mary is an excellent host. We had a great time and the place was really nice and full of character. And the massage was an added bonus too, for a very reasonable price. Hood access for much of Devon and Cornwall, and especially Dartmoor

    Simon2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Unique, quirky cottage that takes you back in time or perhaps into a Harry Potter scene! Mary is a great host who makes you feel welcome and shares her lovely space and beautiful garden. Highly recommended.

    Simon2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • Mary's place is a charming beautifully decorated older cottage. Her artist eye has touched every detail. There is now a fabulous brand new full shower over the bath. Mary is easily reached if you have any questions.

  • The most magical of little cottages to stay!! At night especially, when the fairy lights and wood burner are on it feels just enchanting. My husband, 3 year old daughter and I thoroughly loved our stay here, it has an excellent location and all of Mary’s little touches felt so thoughtful and heartfelt, she’s an excellent host. I highly recommend Mary’s cottage to a stay (though I hope this demand won’t raise the price for our future stays!!) not a bad word to be said. Thank you Mary

  • This is a cosy and homely retreat that's very handily located for all the best attractions in South Devon. We found everything we needed in the cottage and felt warmly welcomed by the owner.

    Matthew2018-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved magical cottage & couldn't recommend highly enough to anyone one who loves a magical, unusual, beautiful place to stay. Mary was available if we needed her.

    Sarah2018-09-09T00:00:00Z
  • It's quirky, colourful and cosy and a bit like a fairy grotto. The bed was wonderfully comfortable and parking was surprisingly easy as it's at a premium in Buckfastleigh - the parking meter gave us a credit for the next day once the out-of-hours had expired!!! And very cheap to park all day, five minutes or less from the cottage. We loved all the bits and pieces and especially the fairy lights! And wait until you see the incredible Sultan's Bedroom!

Shuttaford Barn is a recently converted barn on a 16thC Dartmoor farmstead on the edge of the moors next to Holne and Ashburton. It is the perfect spot to explore the wilds of Dartmoor, walk along the beautiful River Dart or head to the many South Devon beaches for the day. Or just relax in the peaceful surroundings of the barn and its garden. For summer months we generally do Friday to Friday bookings. Please message us if you want to discuss other days or duration of stay.
The architect designed conversion has created a modern rustic feel to the space, reusing many of the original materials with vintage furnishings and a large double height country kitchen. Underfloor heating runs throughout the lower floor to give a luxurious and homely feel on bare feet in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Large cast iron radiators upstairs to make sure whatever the weather the barn remains warm and cosy. An en-suite kingsize bedroom and twin bedroom are located downstairs, along with a family bathroom (with a luxurious rolltop bath and separate shower) and large kitchen dining space. A staircase leads up to the main living space which has a 'loft' feel, and another double bedroom with a built in bed 'nook'. The generous living room has a double sided woodburner and two seating areas, large rooflights provide a light and airy feel and a big opening window gives views out to the surrounding hills. A sofa bed is located in the living space for larger parties and we can provide a travel cot for babies. Lots of books and games are provided for entertainment as well as TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime and dvd player (and plenty of dvd's).
Shuttaford Barn is located in a hidden valley just outside the village of Holne and next to Ashburton. Holne has an excellent community run village shop, and a soon to re-open pub. It is less than a 10 minute drive to the nearby towns of Ashburton and Buckfastleigh with local shops, cafes and restaurants. Ashburton has a fantastic selection of local food shops, a deli, bakery, fish deli, butchers and farmers market. A 5 minutes drive takes you up onto the open moorland of Dartmoor or down to the River Dart with its magical walks and wild swimming spots. You can walk from the house or head up to the moor, plenty of maps and walking books are provided. The town of Totnes is a 20 minute drive with lots of cafes, restaurants, shops and markets. Nearby places to visit for foodies include Riverford Farm and Field Kitchen and Sharpham Vineyard. The nearest beaches are an easy 30-40 minutes drive with plenty of options for surfing all along the south Devon coast. The nearby A38 (less than 10 minutes) allows easy access to Exeter, Plymouth and beyond.
  • The most lovely barn at the most wonderful place!

    Lise2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • What an incredible weekend spent at Shuttaford! A beautiful barn, incredibly well designed and thought out with personal touches. A really peaceful location, in easy reach of Dartmoor, beaches and local villages. Francesca was an excellent host - we felt incredibly welcome as did our children. We will definitely be returning for another stay soon.

    Kate2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing location and space! The Barn is an exceptional space - with a beautiful open kitchen, lovely bath, great nooks to read by the fire, wonderful bedrooms, all tucked in a valley surrounded by magical hills. The design, comfort, amazing location, amenities, cleanliness, interior style and natural beauty were beyond our expections. Fran and Phil were very welcoming and accommodating - leaving special coffee, biscuits and wine (we are big coffee drinkers). The location was perfect for us - close enough to get to a town but equally easy to walk out the door and go for a hike. My husband and I loved it so much we booked an extra night which was well worth it as we walked to the local pub under a full moon that evening. I will be recommending this spot to all of our friends and family in the U.S. We definitely hope to make it back again and stay longer. THANK YOU, Cynthia & Jeremy p.s. I would plan on arriving during the day as the location can be a bit challenging to find the first time round.

    Cynthia2020-01-09T00:00:00Z
  • My family of four and another family of four enjoyed a wonderful week over the New Year period at this beautiful barn conversion. The backdrop of the Dartmoor scenery was stunning and surpassed all of our expectations. Fran was a very helpful host and there if we needed anything which we didn’t as everything was so thoughtfully provided.

    Diana2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • What a beautiful house! 4 friends and I stayed at Francesca’s place for a long weekend. Fran was so welcoming, even lending us an egg one evening to save us driving into town! And the space was sparkling clean and beautiful. Everything you could have wished for.

  • This was my 3rd visit in 5 weeks. It was a perfect location for my canoeing activities. I repeat the remarks in my 2 previous reviews. A very chilled and interesting place to stay. Would like to see more like this from Airbnb.

  • Fantastic location; gateway to the Dartmoor and the Dart River; close to town centre, 2 pubs, a supermarket, fish & chip and good chinese take away all within 100 yards, yet quiet and peaceful. Very comfortable bed and new luxury in-bath shower. Mary, the host, is very helpful and most hospitable; her communications are clear and timely. All made for a very chilled and relaxing stay.

  • Thanks Mary. I have had a lovely time. You did say your cottage is quirky and I have to agree. Love it though... and the breakfast too... and the wood burner and all those cups of tea! It's not 5 star luxury but you are a 5 star host

    Roger2017-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • It was an absolute delight staying at Mary's beautiful home. From the first moment she was incredibly welcoming, caring and considerate. I had lived in Buckfastleigh years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find her place tucked off the Main Street in a cozy wee home. It was, by far, the best and my favourite Airbnb experience and if you're even considering this space, hop on it while its available. Thanks again Mary!

    Devin2017-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • This is a wonderfully quaint house decorated with creative flair and true vintage style. Mary is a warm and hospitable host offering tea on arrival and a sumptuous breakfast each morning. In the heat, the cottage was cool and airy and the garden a wee piece of paradise in Devon. Easy walking to shops, restaurants countryside and attractions. Wonderful.

  • Thanks to Paul. Lovely and stylish accommodation, and all that we had hoped for - we had a lovely stay. It was comfortable, warm with excellent amenities, and Paul was an excellent host. Would highly recommend.

  • My wife and I stayed for a week at the Old Stables. In the last few years, I've traveled to over a dozen Airbnbs all over the world and this is easily the nicest place I've stayed. Paul is an incredible host who went above and beyond for us. Check-in is easy. If you like walking, we walked to Buckfast Abbey and Dembury Woods, which aren't more than a half hour leisurely walk away. Everything you need for a long or short stay. Plus, an amazing bathtub. I can't recommend the Old Stables more. You won't be disappointed.

    Johnny2020-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • Paul’s house was perfect for our family. There were some lovely touches like leaving us jams and a loaf of bread, and the house was cosy and beautifully designed. The space was great for our toddler too. The house is in an excellent location, easy to find and a good central point from the sights in the local area. Paul was an excellent host, great communication and thoughtful to his guests. Highly recommended!

We are 15 minutes away from the medieval Dartington Hall which is a world renowned artistic centre set in stunning gardens and which has a rich programme of cultural events. We are also close by Rill Farm which is a centre for a number of yoga and other similar workshops. And if you like steam trains we have that too - during the summer a number of vintage trains run from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. This is a hot spot for local and organic food - the renowned Riverford Farm Kitchen restaurant and shop is just 10 minutes drive away. There is a good local supermarket 5 minutes away in Buckfastleigh and a brilliant fish deli and bakery in Ashburton just 8 minutes away. There are plenty of good pubs in the area - the nearest is about 10 minutes walk away. For train travellers, Totnes is 3 hours from London on the main line from Paddington Station. We're half an hour South of Exeter and half an hour North of Plymouth, buses run to Buckfastleigh from both cities. There are airports at Exeter (45 minutes away) and Bristol (90 minutes away) both of which have international connections.
This is a very beautiful and peaceful part of Devon. The property is framed by our magnificent oak trees with Hembury Woods and the further off hills of Dartmoor forming the wider background. Our garden is full of birds all year round.
  • Had a great stay and enjoyed the cosy, peaceful atmosphere. It is the perfect weekend away. Thank you Nick

  • Great experience! Our boat got excited every time we caught a crab and it was fun to learn how crabbing works in Ocean City. Highly recommend.

  • We had a great time crabbing. David was very hands on and gave everyone a chance to participate. We were with our 3 teenagers and they had a blast

  • Great fun! Was really immersive and hands on. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a real OC experience :)

  • AMAZING! We stayed in OC for a week and this was easily one of the best experiences of the whole trip. Captain Dave knows what he’s doing and gets you up and out of your seat. This experience is super hands on. You get messy and up close and personal to the crabs. Would recommend to anyone and will be coming back year after year to do this experience again!

  • Great hands on experience! It was a super fun time and I learned a lot about crabbing.

A warm welcome awaits you at Higher Mill Leat, with homemade cakes and fresh hot tea. (Please let me know if you have any special dietary requirements). Wake up in the king size bed to wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and moorland. Tea and coffee making facilities, and mini fridge in bedroom. Eggs are from our own free range hens. This is a modern farm house, on a working farm, with stunning views of Dartmoor. An ideal place to stay for visiting the moors, coast or towns.
We farm suckler cows and sheep, which during the summer months graze the moorland. This helps keep Dartmoor looking the way it does. This is an ideal base for touring beautiful South Devon. Just a stones throw from open moorland. Beaches 15 miles, and we are half way between Exeter and Plymouth. The nearest pub is 1 mile, with others within 10mins drive. Ashburton cookery school is only 12mins drive. Buckfastleigh steam railway and Buckfast Abbey are 6 minutes drive.
    Peaceful, rural setting.
  • Lovely place and a delicious breakfast - would recommend. Shame about the weather, but that can't be helped! Thank you.

Dawn provides a great breakfast to set you up for the day, including freshly prepared eggs of your choice and great coffee, thoughtfully catered to accommodate gluten free diets. Local pubs are worth checking out and very welcoming.

The room is very spacious and light with a walk in wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk and plenty of storage. The bed is 4ft with a new firm mattress. The accommodation is ideal for solo travellers or students/professionals undertaking training locally (female preferred). Organic muesli, yoghurt and berries always available to help yourself to as well as a choice of teas and fresh coffee.
  • Fantastic hospitality at Rachel’s ( and Daisy the cute dog ). Spacious that I anticipated and confortable room in the center of town, easy access to all amenities and if you wish to walk to the cookery school it’ll only take you 15 min, great way to start the day ! Would stay there again. Thanks Rachel !

  • Rachel's accommodation is the true spirit of Airbnb. Rachel is welcoming, familiar and also discreet, a lovely person with a very positive energy. The room in your house is impeccable, with plenty of space, bright and a super comfortable bed. Upon entering, Rachel makes it possible for you to want to unpack and start feeling at home. The location is also perfect, in the center of Ashburton, a beautiful town, quiet and with character, surrounded by nature and at the entrance of the beautiful Dartmoor National Park. I have been using Airbnb for a long time, and I can certainly say that it is one of the best places I have been. No surprise, as you see it that way, is even better than what you see in the ad once you meet Rachel and, later, you get captivated by Ashburton. Thank you Rachel for taking great care of your guests (and for your patience with my English too).

  • I’m not even sure where to begin. The flat itself is lovely and the room is perfect and had everything I needed for a monthlong stay while I attended the cookery school. It was an easy, straightforward walk to get to the school each day. I loved how the location was right in the heart of Ashburton, making it a 2 minute walk to the store to pick up milk or go to the wine bar and other shops and restaurants. It was lovely. Rachel and Daisy were the perfect hosts. So much so that by the end of my trip I didn’t want to leave! Rachel went out of her way to make me feel at home. I’ll miss those nights chatting on the couch with a cup of tea. And all of her insider knowledge of what to do and where to go in Ashburton and Devon, in general. I have to say, I didn’t know people this lovely existed. I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who has the privilege to visit special little Ashburton. I hope to come back again one day. :)

  • I came to Ashburton to culinary school and stayed with Rachel for 1 month. The room is bright and has everything you need. Big mirror, table with seat , big space to hang clothes. The bed is comfortable with nice linen :). Apartment is in very good location. Just in the centrem 1 minute walk from the shops and pubs, 15 minutes from ashburton academy. Rachel was an excellent host. Very kind. friendly and caring. Would definitely stay again in the future. Thank you Rachel :)

  • A very nice and comfortable flat in a great location. Rachel was a very welcoming host - definitely recommend!

    Amy2019-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • Rachel is a wonderful and kind host and her flat is really beautiful , clean, spacious and has a great bohemian vibe. The bed is one of the most comfortable I ever slept in! The location of the flat is great, too, bang in the middle of Ashburton, close to shops and lovely local restaurants and cafes. Even though it is on the main street it is very quiet at night. I'd definitely recommend it!

Unique hay loft/coach house with fascinating Sherlock Holmes history as at one time owned by Harry Baskerville. Fully equipped kitchen with little balcony leading to open plan vaulted living space. Large ground floor bedroom with kingsize bed. Shower room.
The Hay Loft has been tastefully modernised and is fully equipped to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. The property sleeps 2 comfortably although a z-bed, cot or child's bed can also be put up if required. The Coach House dates back to 1835 and originally housed horses & a coach on the ground floor and a hayloft on the first floor. The coachman Henry (known as Harry) Baskerville lived there from 1932 until he died in 1962 aged 91. He was the coach driver that drove Conan Doyle around Dartmoor while researching the developing story for The Hound of the Baskervilles with his friend Bertram Fletcher Robinson of Ipplepen. According to an Ashburton resident who nursed Baskerville in his old age she was shown a first edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by his daughters with a note on the inside cover saying 'with apologies for using the name... ' The main house that sleeps 6 can also be holiday let through airbnb.
The Hay Loft is in the foothills of the Dartmoor National Park. Ashburton is a thriving town with plenty of interesting shops and places to eat all within walking distance (and unusually NO chains!) The property is within 10 minutes of the open moor and within 45 minutes of the coast. There is plenty to see and do both in Ashburton itself, closeby and further afield.
  • This is a lovely ‘getaway’ place - beautifully laid out and and very comfortable. Quiet and private but in the centre of town. The town has every amenity you could ever want and is a very friendly place.

    Rosemary2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely spot in town, warm and comfortable with the friendliest host who has the most helpful advice about the area

    Eleanor2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • Another lovely stay in the Hay Loft. A wonderfully cosy and relaxing place to come back to on dismal winter days - New Year’s Eve drinks on the terrace were particularly memorable. Wendy was super-helpful and friendly, and a great source of local knowledge. Highly recommended!

    Lucy2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Wendy and Chris are tremendous hosts. They took the time to give us a warm welcome at the cottage, and gave us some great suggestions with how to spend our time in the local area. Their place is really cosy and clean, and we enjoyed our time there immensely. Would highly recommend!

  • What a gorgeous secluded little hideaway right in the middle of the village literally 30 seconds away from all amenities. Chris and Wendy were super helpful and communicative the entire trip and gave us handy local tips. We loved the history of the place and how thoughtfully put together it was. A real home away from home. PS - make sure you go to Ella's bakery (closed Sunday) across the road for some of the best sourdough we have ever tasted!

    Liya2019-11-24T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I had a lovely stay at Wendy's place. It is a very cosy and comfortable space and ideally located in the vibrant town of Ashburton, the perfect launching point into Dartmoor. We were also greeted so warmly and given lots of local tips. Thank you, Wendy and Chris, for a lovely stay!
