Your guide to Killington

All About Killington

Situated in the Green Mountains of central Vermont, the town of Killington may be on the smaller side, but it has a lot to offer when it comes to year-round outdoor activities. The snow-covered mountains make Killington a popular spot for downhill skiing and snowboarding during the winter months, but as the snow melts, the mountains are transformed with green throughout the forests and mountainsides.

While hiking and biking are popular ways to explore the stunning mountain scenery, Killington also has a 4,800-foot rollercoaster that gives riders a unique way to experience the beauty of the mountains. Although the town is known for the numerous outdoor activities visitors can enjoy throughout the year, it is anything but a sleepy mountain town — Killington’s active nightlife draws people from all over the region. Lounges, taverns, and steakhouses come alive as the sun sets, allowing for some nighttime fun before the next day of exploration begins.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Killington

Vermont has four distinct, and equally picturesque seasons, each bringing a different set of weather conditions. The winter months provide plenty of snowfall for Green Mountains’ many winter activities, making it a popular time for visitors to book Killington vacation rentals. Although the town is known for its excellent winter skiing, as the weather warms in April and May people ditch the skis for hiking boots and mountain bikes — but mornings can still be chilly, so bring a jacket. Summer’s heat is not too oppressive, making it an ideal time to spend as much time outdoors as you can handle, and the crisp fall weather washes through New England in late September. The area is also home to several events throughout the year. The town’s popular brewfest in September features live music and more than 80 local craft beers. In early December, you can wander among dozens of decorated trees and craft stalls at the Vermont Holiday Festival, all to the sound of holiday music.

Top things to do in Killington

Thundering Falls Trail

Just outside of town, an accessible boardwalk will lead you to a cascading waterfall, the sixth tallest in Vermont. Several trails of varying distances and difficulty levels branch off from the boardwalk. At the top of the falls, you’ll find a swimming hole for a welcome dip to cool off during the warm summer months.

Gifford Woods State Park

Located in northern Killington, Gifford Woods State Park covers 285 acres and offers numerous trails, including the Old Growth Interpretive Trail, where you can find displays along the way that tell the history of the hardwood forest and describe the characteristics of the trees found throughout. A shaded picnic spot with a play area provides a scenic place to soak up the tranquility of the forest.

Billings Farm and Museum

Billings Farm and Museum, in nearby Woodstock, has several historic barns, pastures, gardens, and a fully restored farmhouse from the late 1800s. The museum exhibits include authentic farm tools and equipment and family possessions from life on the farm in times gone by. Classes and workshops are also run throughout the year, providing visitors with the chance to learn how to pickle, make jams, can produce, and more.
