Little Bear Cottage is a renovated Cottage originally constructed in 1925. It offers pastoral views from two covered porches, a private yard, access to open fields and lots of quiet privacy in a unique community. This is an amazing property for stargazers, families, and anyone looking for a retreat from the grid but is also conveniently located about 3 miles from Banner Elk and Valle Crucis.

The space
Little Bear Cottage is a pet friendly, mountain gem that offers a quiet retreat, nestled in a small community with close access to nature and hiking trails. The house was built in 1925 but has been renovated and offers updated modern convenience and comfort.

Little Bear Cottage offers two cozy bedrooms, a full bathroom, a full laundry room (washer/dryer/iron), and an open plan living room, dining area and fully equipped modern kitchen. The living area features a stone gas fireplace, comfy furniture, and a 48” tv.

If you are looking for a place to listen to peep frogs or crickets, stargaze, or hike with your dog this is the place for you! Our quiet setting brings lots of nature with all the comfort of home. Whether it is visiting our little pond or walking your dog in the field, its all right there. Our farm land is adjacent to forest owned by the Valle Crucis Conference Center. This land is part of the Blue Ridge Conservancy (find it online as-blueridgeconservancy-valle crucis conference center) which offers hiking trails open to the public. If you are interested in hiking, just let us know and we will fill you in on how to access trails and adventures.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to the use of the entire space, drive, and yard, including the fire pit. The surrounding field from the road to the treeline around the field is also part of the property and guests are encouraged to explore and enjoy the space. This field is a great place to play with your dog or go for a walk.

Other things to note
We are adjacent to a large tract of land owned by the Valle Crucis Conference Center that is part of the Blue Ridge Conservancy. As such this land is available to our guests for hiking or just to enjoy the glory of nature. This property is accessible in the back of our field along the tree line. There are numerous hiking paths, rock cliffs, old ruins further down the hill, and access to Crab Orchard Falls. If you hike long enough you can eventually even reach the Conference Center in Valle Crucis. Rules are the same as for a national park, leave it as you found it. We do encourage our guests to tell someone if they elect to hike here as this is a large tract of land and it is possible to get lost. We want everyone to be safe. If you are visiting alone we are happy to look out for you or share tips. Just let us know when you leave and when you plan to return.

We offer a fire pit in the yard. If you want to build a fire, you can buy wood at most of the stores in Banner Elk.

- We have a firm pet policy. Our fee is normally $100 but we waive it for our AirBNB guests. In the event that guests fail to observe our pet policy (see House Rules below) we will assess the full $100 fee and bill for any additional damage or fees. Additional details are available in our HOUSE MANUAL

Neighborhood highlights

Little Bear Farm is located in a small rural farming community that was built in the early 1800’s. It is great for biking, exploring, dogs, and children. The Matney Liberty Church, about a mile away, was built by the local community around 1800. Its cemetery hosts many of the founding community members' grave sites. While we have many new neighbors in Matney, the descendants of the original settlers also continue to live and farm here. We have a new volunteer fire department, Shawneehaw Fire Department who sponsor a yearly BBQ and a pie supper open to anyone who wants to attend.

Little Bear Farm is also part of a larger property once owned by Hester and Bill Smith, members of the original community. The host and co/host of Little Bear Farm are 7th or 8th generation descendents of the Smith Family. C.O. Matney and his wife Rosie, who built the cottage at Little Bear Farm around 1925.

While there is some traffic on Rominger Road, for the most part this is a very quiet spot. The stars and fireflies dominate the evening. There is abundant wildlife, including small animals such as peep frogs, rabbits, opossums, raccoons, and turkeys and large animals including deer (lots of deer) , coyotes, and bears. You will find open fields that once grew tobacco or cabbage, and now grow hay or pasture livestock. Crab Orchard Creek flows through Matney and down the mountain into the river in Valle Crucis. The "Episcopal Mission" property, part of the Blue Ridge Conservancy, borders our property at the tree line and extends all the way into Valle Crucis. Rominger Road connects with Scenic NC194 which connects Valle Crucis and Banner Elk. This road is a beautiful, winding, mountain road also locally known as "Winding Stair Gap" is a local favorite for sight-seeing, photographers, and bicyclists. As a point of interest, Bill Smith (our grandfather/great grandfather) was part of a work crew who built the original road with picks, shovels, and wheelbarrows. Originally it operated as a “turnpike or toll road”, part of which still exists in Banner Elk.

I am a professional educator and licensed professional Counselor. I live on a small farm with my husband were we have horses and dogs. We enjoy horse back riding at a variety of locations in the United States and spending time with family and our dogs. I enjoy landscape painting and spending time out doors. We love the quiet unique atmosphere of Banner Elk, and the Shawneehaw Township. There is nothing better than making S'mores, watching lightning bugs and listening to the peep frogs on a summer night.
