The Scooby Shack is a cozy, K-9 friendly home that caters to dogs and their humans. Set back on a quiet cul de sac, our vacation home offers a large fenced in yard with doggy door access for small/medium-sized pooches. This little gem has 2 bedrooms with memory foam mattresses, a full bath, a stocked kitchen, a dining nook and a large comfortable couch for cuddling, but the best room in the house is undeniably the wrap-around screened-in porch! Plus an outdoor shower and a gas fire pit too.

The space
At 540 sqft, the Scooby Shack is not quite tiny enough to be considered a "tiny house", but we tried to pack it with just as much charm as those little wonders. This cozy cottage gives us just enough room to spread out and a place for our fur-babies to vacation too. OBX has been our family's favorite vacation destination since the 80s when Mom & Dad bought a time-share in Kitty Hawk. We still enjoy our traditioned time-share, but it isn't big enough to house all of us anymore, and it has never allowed pets. That's what brought us here to the Scooby Shack.

The wrap-around porch is my favorite room in the house. I also love having a fenced in yard that's the perfect puppy playground for my little explorers. And if you're lucky, it will rain at least one time during your stay. Laying in bed with the sound of rain on the metal roof is its own kind of therapy. The Scooby Shack is still a work in progress, but there's a lot to love about this little gem.

Renovating a "vintage" 1970s trailer into a cute beach cottage was my pandemic passion project. Improvements continue between guest stays, and I will update pictures as projects are completed. House exterior should be repainted by summer '24 *fingers crossed*. We are excited to share the Scooby Shack with you and your K-9 companion, and we hope you thoroughly enjoy your stay!

Guest access
When you pull into our cul-de-sac, it's almost a straight shot into our 2-car driveway. Our house is on a triangle shaped lot, and it sits sideways on the lot (the right side of the house faces the street/driveway). You'll enter through the gated arbor. Then follow the boardwalk to the screened-in front porch to enter The Scooby Shack. The interior of the house and the porch are all yours. Guests (K-9 and human) have full access to the yard. Our front yard is like a backyard, but it's technically the front. Please enjoy the fire pit - it's gas and easy to turn on and off. When you turn it off, please let it cool and put the cover back on to protect it from the rain. The outdoor shower is located on the back deck out the door from the bedroom with the full-sized bed. There's also a hose and clothes line in the front yard if either are needed. I've include a floor plan of the house in my pictures - feel free to ask me any questions about the space or amenities.

Other things to note
Colington is part of Kill Devil Hills, but it's an island that sits out in the sound. As you head toward the Scooby Shack, you will discover that Colington Road is quite narrow and curvy and the island is surprisingly hilly. It is not recommended to ride bikes along Colington Road and please watch your speed (because KDH's finest will be too).

Sandpiper Drive is a hilly neighborhood road that loops around the Scooby Shack. It's safe for walking and jogging. While driving through the neighborhood, please go slow and watch out for small children and animals.

Wildlife sightings are not unusual during your stay... tree frogs, little lizards, birds, deer, cats, peacocks and mosquitoes. The peacocks are pets that occasionally go roaming. It's quite a WOW moment if you happen to stumble across those fellas! The tree frogs do their best to control the mosquito population, but there's a stash of bug spray in the bathroom if you need it.

The outdoor shower has both hot and cold water and is enclosed by curtains that snap together. The outdoor water lines will only be on May 1 to October 31 (earlier and/or later if weather permits).

The new part of our fence is wood picket (on 3 of 4 sides). It's connected to a stretch of chain link fence that was already in place along the back line of the property. Most of the fence is 4ft high, but due to the hilly landscape, there sections that are closer to 3 ft. This is not an issue for my low riders... but if your dog is prone to jumping fences, it's something to consider.

Neighborhood highlights

Live like a local when you vacation at the Scooby Shack. Our house is in Colington Harbor but located outside the gated part of the neighborhood. As part of the Colington Harbor community, guests have access to the private beach and marina year 'round.

Please note that our neighbors are locals who live here year 'round, so please respect the quiet hours... those folks have to go to work in the morning! There are also many dogs in the neighborhood, and there are times when they seem to call out to each other to go outside for chats. A little barking is expected, but please do not leave your dog outside if s/he is incessantly barking. Please be considerate of our neighbors, especially at night.

I'm a family-oriented dog lover who digs the beach anytime of year. I'm happiest out on the water or curled up with my dogs. I enjoy traveling, but lately, all of my "fun money" has been invested into home renovations. My most recent passion project is fixing up The Scooby Shack, our family vacation home in the Outer Banks that we're excited to share with other AirBnB travelers.
