Truly a special experience! We were provided with a lot of info beforehand to find the place and the kayaking was fun. I would suggest to go with another person, or if you have the chance to pair with someone from the group, and not kayak by yourself like I did. There is some distance to the congress bridge and, if you’re not used to kayaking or have little arm strength, it was taxing to do alone. Much better with a friend. You will get wet and I would bring a poncho. If you go under the bridge or under the bats in general, the bats will go number #1 when flying. So bring a poncho or watch from a safe distance! Still really cool and a nice way to see the Austin skyline at sunset.

Bring drinking water, and hit the head before heading waterside. There is a hotel 3 min walk away. Bring a ziplock bag for phones, wear comfortable light- quick dry clothes with full coverage, if possible. There were a few mosquitos, but surprisingly, they were not a nuisance. Meeting is right under the bridge. That’s important as there are a number of groups who meet waterside.
You’ll check in with one of the guides. There are plenty of guides to help with questions. There’s a short chat about safety and water skills before heading out. Proceeding peacefully(or not as you choose), upstream to the Congress Bridge, the guides in a low powered electric motor boat take photos, offer assistance as needed. Under the Congress Bridge everyone links up to learn about the unique location, the interesting bat birthing colony and benefits of bats to our ecosystem. The fascinating glittering city lights provide a magical backdrop to an easy paddle downstream back to the meeting place.
