Preparing your home with safety essentials

According to the CDC, carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in the United States. Installing a carbon monoxide alarm is a simple step that can save lives. For active Airbnb hosts that qualify, you can sign up for a free alarm.

Understanding carbon monoxide safety

  • We encourage every host to understand the risks of carbon monoxide exposure and how it’s impossible to detect without an alarm
  • If your place to stay has specific characteristics or amenities—like a fireplace, fuel-powered appliance, attached garage, generator, grill, or other features that may be associated with CO—we strongly urge that you install one or more carbon monoxide alarms to alert guests if there are unsafe CO levels
  • Check your local laws, which may require one or more working carbon monoxide alarms in rental accommodations

Requesting a free carbon monoxide and smoke alarm

  • You can request one free alarm from Airbnb if you have any active home listings (you’ll be responsible for any custom taxes, if applicable)
  • Get details about Airbnb’s free carbon monoxide/smoke alarm program, including how shipping works and when you can expect to receive the alarm
  • If you need additional alarms or want to receive one quicker, you can find them using sites like Amazon.com, Walmart.com, or by visiting a local hardware store

Note: We provide one alarm per eligible host, but we strongly advise that you install more alarms depending on the needs of your place(s) to stay, and per your local regulations and laws.

Disclosing safety information on your listing

  • Edit your safety info on your listing to reflect whether smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are present—this will be shown on your listing as part of your amenities, as well as with your safety information
  • If your place only uses electric appliances, and doesn’t have an attached garage or other features that may be associated with CO, you have the option to select that a carbon monoxide alarm is not necessary for your property
  • Your listing will show both when no carbon monoxide alarm is present and, if applicable, that you’ve confirmed it isn’t necessary for your property
