Perhaps one of the city's most unlikely attractions, Prague's Lennon Wall has stood since the 1980s as a tribute to former Beatle and peace campaigner John Lennon. Things got started almost immediately after the singer's murder in 1980, when this otherwise unassuming wall near the Charles Bridge became a place for fans to demonstrate their grief, painting pictures, lyrics, and slogans attributed to the star. Despite police efforts to erase the graffiti—Czechoslovakia, as it was then, was still under communist rule—the memorial wall kept reappearing, and the site became a symbol of hope and peace for the city's population. The tradition continues to this day, and along with gatherings on the anniversary of Lennon's death, tourists can frequently be observed adding their sentiments to the wall. Wall painted by John Lennon image after his death. Repainted many times in the meantime. And yes, you can write or paint on it. Do it. Don't worry. Express yourself and feel free.
After his murder on 8 December 1980 John Lennon became a pacifist hero for many young Czechs. An image of Lennon was painted on a wall in a secluded square opposite the French Embassy (there is a niche on the wall that looks like a tombstone), along with political graffiti and Beatles lyrics. Despite repeated coats of whitewash, the secret police never managed to keep it clean for long.

The John Lennon Wall exists under this name since about 1980 and was just an ordinary wall before. At that time young Czech activists started to fill the wall with John Lennon graffiti and lyrics from Beatles songs. John Lennon was seen as a pacifist hero for his songs about freedom, which actually didn't really exist in communist Czechoslovakia.
