The zaros lake, is created by waters that run from the springs of Votomos. Around the lake there is a recreational area with tables and benches, an information board and signs everywhere. You must not miss having a coffee or even a meal on the pier which the municipality has built on the shore of the lake under the deep shade of the plane trees. The local specialty is salmon and trout grilled over an open fire. If you like walking, from here you can relatively easily get to the forest of Rouvas through a well marked path by first passing the church of Saint Nicholas.

The lake of Zaros hosts a number of wild animals, many types of birds, turtles and above all else, it has very big brown trouts. It is perfect for couples or for families as children can play in the adjacent park and all could sit in the cafeteria that is looking at the lake.

Zaros is a traditional cretan village 30 min. drive up to the hill under the mountain of Psiloritis / Idi. You can enjoy the nature and a peaceful walk around the beautiful lake. For the brave ones you can take the trail up to the mountain which leads to Rouvas Forest and an old church of Saint Nikolaos. Its worth visiting!

26 km from Stoloi village. The lake is the largest craftsman in the prefecture. The environment around it has now developed and the landscape is beautiful, green and ideal for an excursion. The landscape helps of course and the fact that the forest of Rouvas and the spring Votomos are within walking distance. At the lake you can walk, sit on a bench and enjoy the scenery, see the fauna and flora and eat your food, either in one of the taverns there, or you can keep your own and enjoy it at one of the wooden tables that are available around the lake. Access is easy by vehicle to a good country road, which in many places is quite narrow, but without becoming dangerous. Nature lovers can start from the lake and end up after a hike (about 2 hours) in the forest of Rouvas. The route is magnificent through the gorge of Ag. Nikolaou.
