The Convent of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin at Micklegate Bar, York, better known as The Bar Convent, is the oldest surviving Roman Catholic convent in England, established in 1686

Cafe and heritage centre - not sure if it is still a convent but still worth a visit. Cafe quite basic (sandwiches, baked potatoes, etc).

Beautiful interior. Reasonably priced food in good quantities. The Convent museum is also worth visiting for its history of religious persecution, and understanding of why the Convent needed to be disguised as an ordinary building.

This is just a short trip from Menagerie House and has a lot of history to tell and delicious cakes are served up in the beautiful team room.
