The Tarka Trail is a 180 mile, figure of eight walking and cycling trail that follows the route travelled by Tarka the Otter in the famous novel by Henry Williamson. The Tarka Trail will take you through ancient villages, wooded valleys, along the banks of rivers, high over moorland with spectacular views of Dartmoor and Exmoor and along dramatic sea cliffs and vast expanses of beautiful beaches.

Inspired by the route travelled by Tarka the Otter, this 180 mile, figure eight route traverses unspoiled countryside, dramatic sea cliffs and beautiful beaches. The southern loop incorporates the longest, continuous off-road cycle path in the UK. Walking or cycling, you can experience the best this beautiful area has to offer. You can join the Tarka Trail from just outside our village. Walk or cycle to Bideford, or further afield to places such as Instow (where you’ll enjoy great coffe at the Deli or a pint at one of the lovely pubs!).

The Tarka Trail (footpath and cyclepath) covers 180 miles around North Devon, easy access to the trail from Stocklea - just down the hill! Cycle hire is available right behind Puffing Billy Cafe. The cafe opens at 9.30/10.00am until 4.00/5.00 pm, depending on season, so good for a breakfast after you checkout to save the washing up! The part of the trail near the Puffing Billy is nicely shaded for hot days/good for dog walking too. The trail uses mostly former railway lines and takes you through a variety of landscapes, wooded river valleys, moorland, coastal cliffs and sandy beaches. Enjoy.
