    Casa Kaktus - Pitahaya Room

Casa Kaktus is a friendly and tranquil place where you can soak up the atmosphere of Santa Cruz and have a base for exploring magical Lake Atitlan. The rooms at Casa Kaktus are spacious and bright, and guests have access to a range of common areas, including the large communal kitchen, hammock patio and our enormous sunny terrace with stunning views of the lake and mountains, perfect for enjoying your free full breakfast with locally produced coffee.

    What guests are saying:

“My partner and I stayed at Casa Kaktus just for one night, which made us wish we hadn’t already booked a non-refundable airbnb in Panajachel for the next two nights. For anyone who has just a few days to experience Lake Atitlan, we’d highly recommend Casa Kaktus and Santa Cruz as your base. The lack of cars and pollution is just wonderful, especially if you’ve been traveling in Guatemala for a time, and you can easily walk 10-15 minutes up to the town, or 30-40 minutes along the trail to Jaibalito and buy a lunch and spend the afternoon on the gorgeous grounds of La Casa del Mundo. This airbnb is tranquil, beautiful, comfortable, the hosts are the kindest and most generous, what more could you want? Several of the other guesthouses we passed in Santa Cruz had more of a backpacker/party vibe, so we were grateful to be lying in our peaceful hammocks at Casa Kaktus. The room was beautiful and the bed was very comfortable. Shared bathroom is always a bit of a drawback, but there were plenty of stalls, they were sparkling clean, and we never had to wait for the shower or sink. When we nearly missed the last lancha to Panajachel, Ever helped carry our bags and rushed us to the dock so we could catch it. And Sarah had called and messaged me to warn us that we were about to miss it. Getting there: if you take a shuttle to Panajachel, there’s a good chance your driver will drop you off at the wrong, east dock. If you look on the map, there’s one at the east end of town (the Santiago dock) and one at the west end of town (the Santa Cruz dock). And there’s a good chance no one will tell you you’re at the wrong dock (even a tourism official failed to mention this to us), and you may get ripped off by having to pay 25Q each for a ‘colectivo’ boat. You should completely ignore the dozens of touts, walk or take a tuk tuk to the western dock, and wait for the public lancha that comes every half hour and stops at every town and costs only 10Q each. Our only word of caution is that the dog can actually be pretty intimidating for anyone who has a dog phobia, but just fine for dog likers/lovers.”

  • Treehouse Retreat - Glamping Plus
    SUPERHOSTTreehouse · 3 guests · 2 beds · 1 bath
    Treehouse Retreat - Glamping Plus

Two story treehouse set among the trees of a larger property. King size bed on the first floor, single bed on the second, & futon pads for extra seating as you wish. The house is easy to enter as it is surrounded by trees rather that built into a tree. Designed by local artesian, it fosters contemplation. Outdoor hot water shower. No kitchen. Bathroom toilet is a "Shrek design", dry drop toilet (non-flushing/no water). Sink for hand washing. LOCAL RESTAURANTS REQUIRE RESERVATIONS BY 4PM!!!

    What guests are saying:

“Arriving is easy, either at the private dock or walking from Santa Cruz´s main dock (which we preferred, because you get to visit local stores and restaurants. Isla Verde has the most delicious breakfasts). At first I wasn't so convinced cause we arrived hot and exhausted and it was very hot, but -as the night took over- it got fresher and the temperature was perfect . There´s a little sitting area where we had coffee in the morning with a partial view of the lake and surrounded with vegetation. The shower is delicious (outside, amidst vegetation), the toilet is not so convenient at night when and it's a little chilly but you still need to head out cause you are peeing. They suggested to buy non-cookable groceries since there is no stove. We ended up buying some dairy which doesn´t need cooking but it does need cooling. The guest from the main house was kind enough to keep it for us (Thank you!). It would be nice to have a minifridge just to have some snacks for the evening since the lasts boats are around 6pm. By the time we left we were in love of the routine (early rise with the sun, shower with delicious breeze, enjoy Atitlán, back to sleep).”

  • Casita del Sol
    Entire house · 2 guests · 1 bed · 1 bath
    Casita del Sol

This charming studio casita is situated on a hillside with the best views of sunrise and moonrise over Lake Atitlan as well as fantastic canyon views. Very private, quiet, lovely gardens, kitchen. Perfect for a single person or a couple. Min. 2 days Santa Cruz is only accessible by boat and is known for its beauty and tranquility. There are some good local restaurants along the lake shore plus kayak rentals and great swimming at the foot our our hill. Hiking is also wonderful in our area.

    What guests are saying:

“Since I am woven from the finest of threads and am really looking for natural beauty, peace and quiet most, if not all, of the time, Pat's little mountain sanctuary retreat paradise did not disappoint and it gave me the rest that I needed from traveling through the chaos of Central America! I loved that the place has views all around, nestled in the side of the mountain, surrounded by a garden paradise that really does feed the soul with what it really needs. The casita has absolutely everything you need to feel comfy and at home. Pat even went and bought a blender for the casita - which just goes to show that this is not a place created just to bring in money - but where care and attention is given. 13 days was not enough! And even though it is a bit of a trek up the hill, worth every step and keeps you fit while you do a lot of sitting and looking at the beauty all around. Six golden stars. :)))) Thanks for all your help Pat.”
