Food Scene

This is on my favourite local coffeeshops. Great coffee, home made pastries and viennoisserie. It's a lovely place to spend a weekend morning with the papers and watching the locals come and go.

A London icon, food market Borough Market has it all. From world class coffee at Monmouth to the best of London's oysters, freshly dived at Colchester by Richard Haworth. It's great on an early Saturday morning but I'd avoid going past 11am as it gets too crowded. If you wan to browse with more leisure, it's best to go on a Thursday or Friday.

A new arrival on the London street food market scene, Maltby Street is a great place to browse. Only open on Saturdays, head here for a great lunch at St. John ( see the doughnuts from their bakery), grilled cheese sandwiches, fresh berries and cream, Argentinian empanadas or craft beer from The Kernel brewery - Maltby Street is ace.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is my local pub and I love it. It's right across the road from the apartment and hosts great cask ales, awesome swing dance nights, an excellent kitchen which does delicious food and board games to while away a rainy day. It has a nice garden out back and the place really gets going in the evening.

Another great local pub - not as close to the apartment as The Old Red Lion, but equally nice. It's more of a quiet neighbourhood pub and has a nice old timer vibe. A great place to have a quiet drink or sit with some wine and a good book.

Another decent local pub, the Prince of Wales is great less because of the pub itself and more because of its setting - Cleaver Square which is one of the last remaining Georgian squares left in Kennington (the others were destroyed in the Blitz of WW2). You can also rent a boules (petanques) set here to play on the gravel square outside. A Kennington institution.

In a way this place doesn't look like much - in a tired and dilapidated shopping centre (which is going to be demolished soon) it's actually a hidden gem of Latin atmosphere. Columbian beers and food, South American football on the tellys, and families having a great time. A great place for an afternoon beer.

Parks & Nature

Famous for good reason, the Heath is 30 minutes from the apartment, due north on the Northern line (get off at Belsize Park or Hampstead stations). It's a wild oasis in the middle of London and deservedly one of the best places to breathe and connect with nature. Great in all seasons, it's particularly nice in Autumn. Check out Kenwood House, a beautiful Georgian mansion in the north of the park with a great collection of paintings, mostly Old Masters. Free entry.

Shopping

Bermondsey Street is a great local shopping street. Use the Santander Cycles opposite the apartment to cycle there in about 15 minutes through the lovely back streets of Southwark. It has an excellent pub (the Woolpack), lovely boutiques and some great bars and coffeeshops. Worth a leisurely Sunday browse.

A world class modern art gallery, you can reach this calming and absorbing space by the bikes opposite the apartment (rent them by the hour and take a leisurely cycle to the White Cube in 15 minutes).

The British home of recording war and conflict. It was recently refurbished and is a great place to spend the afternoon. Particularly good for kids who can explore the model planes and tanks!

Damien Hirst's first public art gallery, the Newport Street Gallery is only 15 minutes' walk from the apartment. As of July 2016, the collection is currently devoted to Jeff Koons. Also has a great restaurant. A must visit. (It's also free!)
