Maltby Street Market opened in 2010. This unlikely south-east London backwater quickly became a popular weekend destination. The Ropewalk bears this name as a reference to a nearby ropewalk owned by notable Bermondsey eccentric Robert Rich in the eighteenth century and marked thus on John Roques' map of 1746. The area was disrupted by the the construction of the London to Greenwich railway completed in 1836. The viaduct that carried the railway consisting of 40,000,000 bricks [not verified by us!] now provides a home for both Maltby Street Market and many other food and beverage traders in Bermondsey. Maltby Street Market has been fully subscribed since its origination. It's very limited size and the picturesque character of the railway arches and decoration encourages and allows for careful curation and a churn of start-ups and star traders.

This is a relatively small food stall market in Bermondsey (neighbourhood), but cute nonetheless. People rave about the filled doughnuts at St. John Bakery (though I’m beholden to Crosstown Doughnuts). At this market, I especially love Waffle On and Amen Ethiopian.

Located directly behind The Tanners Studios. The Maltby Street Market is a hidden gem, that serves up the most incredible delights of street food from Vegetarian Ethiopian Food to French Duck Frites and Bangers n' Mash. This is a must visit on the weekends.

The best street food area in London, in my opinion! Always so much fun, shop with your nose down this street — all cuisines are up for grabs.

A less known food market, but personally I love it. Check their websites opening times. The Market is along railway arches. You can combine this visit with Borough Market as its not too far.
