Newhaven is a well connected town (ferry port, train station, many buses to Lewes and Brighton). It's also well served with larger stores like Sainsbury's, Kwikfit, Lidl and Home Sense.

My favourite local pub - good pub grub and friendly service. It's a lovely 45 minute walk up and over the Downs from the cottage if you fancy working up an appetite!

Fabulous vineyard, literally on the hills behind the cottage. They have a great restaurant and tasting menu. They also do tours of the vineyards, or for something a bit more low key you can visit the airstream caravan for a wine or coffee and enjoy the outside grassy terrace that overlooks the vineyards. Check their website for hours and bookings.

Another good local pub. This one is a little further from the cottage but worth it for the good food at reasonable prices. It has a good free from menu also, which is unusual for pubs in this area.

This is the third hotel in the Polizzi Collection and it has a good restaurant for lunch and dinner. It's located in historic Alfriston, just moments from the South Downs Way. It's a good option for something a bit more upmarket/boutique.

Traveler advice

Getting around

12/12a bus to Brighton / Eastbourne is great and frequent

The eastbound stop is right at the bottom of the lane, turn left and it's right there. For the westbound stop, cross over the road (take care, cars can come round fast) and walk about 40m towards Seaford/east. Live timetables are available online.

Getting around

To walk to Seaford/Newhaven on foot...

Cross over the main A259 road and enter the Tidemills National Park via the gate by the westbound bus stop (called Foxhole Farm). Alternatively, you can cross over and walk west on the A259 (for about 30m and there is a large gate. The footpath is lovely and there are several routes through the marsh to Newhaven and Seaford that avoid the noise of the A259.
