  • Excellent space, amazing architecture! Interior is huge & comfy. Loved hearing coquis in the evening (but glad earplugs were provided for the roosters). Morris is not lying when he says this home has big paradise energy.

  • The house is very spacious and comfortable. Very well equipped. The host is very gracious and extremely welcoming. We had everything we needed and more than expected.

  • A 5 star Airbnb. Location is great, close to downtown for foods and grocery, but not far from the attractions. Space: It is super clean and there are lots of thoughtful touches provided by the host. The space is huge and would be great for a big family. Communication: Morris and Yuka are very helpful, everything including local tips and supermarket coupon are provided from our communication. I’d highly recommend Morris and Yuka’s place for whoever would like to visit Hilo.

    Caroline2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Morris is a five-star host only because they don’t make 10 stars! Morris was very attentive to our needs and showed a level of generosity that is rare in today’s world. We felt welcome and at ease with Morris immediately and it was very clear that he wanted everything to be just right for us....and it was! I recommend staying at this location without hesitation!

  • We were 6 adults and 1 kid stayed for 2 days. When we arrived in, Moris welcomed us warmly. The house was big and clean. He prepared everything such as kid toys, full kitchen, washing machine, winter cloth, welcome frute breakfast and the small gift. We also liked outdoor bbq grill. It's little difficult to find the entry od house from the highway but we didn't suffer from the road noisy. We definitely recommend this house to everyone.

  • I had a wonderful time with my family! There were playground equipment for children aged 0 and 4 to be able to play with fun, and the response was quick and complete. I want to stay again!

    Noritaka2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • We’ve stayed in a lot of Air B&Bs over the years but Morris was by far the most wonderful host we’ve met. Great communication, local tips, fruit and breakfast provided for the first day. The house has everything you could possibly need from beach equipment to coolers to a karaoke machine! Highly recommended.

    Rosie2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is a hostel with attentive consideration from the host. The house is very clean and there is no shortage for me.

Our Tiny Tropical Treehouse is a very special space full of creativity and beauty. Custom built by an artist, this eco-house is flooded with natural sunlight, rich with wood accents, and inextricably connected to nature. It is ideal for couples and individuals looking for a private retreat nestled away in the jungle. Adventurers, relaxers, writers, and artists will enjoy staying here, a mere 18 mi from all Volcano National Park has to offer and 20 mi from downtown Hilo.
Tiny treehouse, swinging bridge, and zooming zipline... oh my! This rental is one of a kind. The house boasts an eco-friendly footprint to travelers, budding botanical garden, unique custom interior, and a getaway retreat from busy life. In 2016 Caroline and Melissa embarked upon building this off-grid house. With some serious planning, a hint of overconfidence, and a lot of support, we hit the ground running. At Home Depot we were serendipitously roped into an interview for HGTV's show "Tiny Paradise." The film crew showed up at our door a week later! From then the project took on a whole new energy. We embarked upon new murals, art projects, and all kinds of visual eye candy to make sure every corner of the house was the highest quality we could muster. We hope you enjoy the finished product and all the love and time that went into custom making every inch of this space! If you want to check out the episode we are episode #2 "Tiny Hawaiian Hideaway" in the HGTV series "Tiny Paradise." Below is a description of what you can expect when you visit: Follow the red cinder trail through the stunning botanical array that envelops our off-grid tiny house. Ascend 8 feet up into the air for the cool breeze and a better view of the surrounding flora and fauna. You've arrived! With a total of 13 windows and glass doors, you enter into the comfort and luxury of the home but your view extend hundreds of feet into the surrounding jungle of Ohia and Hapu'u. Once inside you will see dozens of wood accents, from our high-backed log chair, to our Koa Wood Balinese style couch. The loft is held up with posts made from Ohia trees sourced from our own property. We made the loft handrail, coffee table, and hand-towel hangers from trees that had to be cleared during the construction of our house. Enjoy lounging on the expansive Balinese couch while you bird watch, or kick your feet up onto the trunk as you become immersed in a good read. On your way to the kitchen meander past the stained glass window depicting a cardinal, we coincidentally have two males and one female on the property! Also keep an ear out for baby hawk in the early spring. You enter the kitchen and will be blown away by the design of the floating dish racks. The custom Chocolate Albezia wood slab counter top shimmers, as does the glass sink basin and hand blown pendant lights hanging overhead. Relax at the kitchen bar and sip on your morning coffee as you watch the sunrise strike leaves and dew, setting them off into stunning shades of green, red, orange, and yellow. Eat your lunch while pondering the tiny mushrooms and vibrant moss growing on a nearby tree. Drink a glass of wine while you stare at the milky way and the moon. Tucked away in a dark corner of the house is the lava themed bathroom. Enter the bathroom and feel the cool natural stone underneath your feet, be reminded of that lava tube you explored yesterday or will crawl around in today. The main volcanic mural, created with naturally smoothed lava rocks, will captivate your eyes as you shower. The fiery glass sink, with a rough field of lava swirling around it, is a focal point of the lava spilling into your lavatory experience. A local female artist made the themed art piece hanging on the wall; illustrating traditional canoes, hula, Pele (the volcano goddess) and ancient rituals. The sliding barn door and tinted openable window envelop you in the private surreal feel of the space. Enjoy! It's all yours! Before you head to bed you absolutely must make your way across the swinging bridge to arguably the best part of the house. The treehouse! Supported by two rows of sister trees, the deck is a magical place to lay down and look up at the sun shining through the leaves, get close to Lehua blossoms or a herd of blooming orchids, and watch the stars glittering through the branches. We enjoy eating every meal we can out there and doing work while lounging in the reclinable chair. If you're visiting with a romantic partner (eyebrow wiggle), there was a psychology study that found people misattribute the excitement of a swinging bridge to the attraction they feel for a potential love interest. So go on, get your partner on the bridge with you and spice things up. Get your heart beating faster... is it the bridge?... is it your partner? I guess we'll never know. When all the excitement has passed and you're all tuckered out, climb the space efficient right-left ladder staircase to the loft. Wiggle into the comfort and luxury of our memory foam mattress, feel it envelop your body, and then never get up ;). The loft is cozy, but it's a room with a view. Along the headboard a 10 inch window encourages you to stargaze from the comfort of your bed, at one of the clearest skies in the world! I personally love laying on my side staring out the openable window and looking at the silhouettes of the surrounding forest contrasted against the starry night sky. Under the warmth of the comforter enjoy the cool mountain breeze (1900 feet of elevation) as you drift off to sleep. What else can we say? This place is paradise and heaven on earth and our pride and joy. We hope you will love it as much as we do! ********************************************************** The "Eco" in our house: We hope you will love the artistic luxury of the space and re-define what is possible to create with reclaimed materials and an off-grid lifestyle. We built this house ourselves and one of our main goals was for guests to enjoy being off-grid and see first hand how lovely it can be to go green. We adore nature (if you couldn't tell ;) ) and so it was very important for us to have the smallest footprint possible throughout the building process, therefore we hunted, hunted and kept hunting! All 5 of the huge 4 ft x 6 ft windows connecting the interior space to the natural beauty found outside, were reclaimed. We scored on the 2 glass doors because Ace Hardware in Kea'au was de-installing them from their store front. We managed to give dying surfboards new life in our functional art piece on the treehouse deck. We collected lava rocks from local beaches to create the volcano mural that defines the bathroom and the red cinder trail was locally sourced from a volcanic red cinder cone. The entryway mosaic was made possible by broken tiles that were going to be thrown away at Floor Decor in Hilo. The hardwood floors came from my uncle's hardwood floor business after a sample batch for a hotel wasn't the exact color that the interior designers were going for (lucky us). Our water catchment tank and stove top are second-hand and we are utterly proud of it all! We hope you remember the beauty of this place & bit of land long after you are gone, to us, "eco" can also mean comfy!
We are situated in the Ohia jungle. Throughout a day only a handful of cars will drive by. (Once, we had lumber delivered in the middle of the road because we didn't have a driveway yet.) From the house only one house is visible in the back distance but you can occasionally hear our front neighbors. There are abandoned vehicles down the road but that's not uncommon in rural neighborhoods on the Big Island.
  • My boyfriend and I were blessed to find Melissa and Catherine’s amazing treehouse on Airbnb for our two week quarantine and we loved every minute of our full forest immersion. At sunset we would sit on the deck and slide down the zip line, the kitchen was fully equipped to create any meal you can think of and the outdoor shower was surrounded by beautiful orchids and lush greenery, we would definitely recommend this spot for a few days to feel the real Hawaii vibes.

    Alicia2020-04-18T00:00:00Z
  • This is a gorgeous home! Every little corner has a unique artistic touch that makes the whole experience enjoyable. The platform is great for stargazing and the zipline was the icing on the cake!

    Jasmine2020-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • What an amazing space! Absolutely beautiful throughout, well thought out and beautifully landscaped. I recommend especially if you are looking for someplace unique and with tons of charm!

    Aleenah2020-03-30T00:00:00Z
  • If your having second thoughts... don’t! The treehouse is so stylish and fun! An architectural art installation in a lush island setting!

    Rich2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing secluded cabin tucked away in a beautiful rain forest. Perfect place for a romantic get away. We loved the zip-line! So much fun. While probably not absolutely necessary, having a 4WD helped getting there, as some of the puddles from all the recent rain could have given smaller cars trouble.

    Patrick2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This is an absolute MUST STAY!!!! It is off the beaten path and secluded in the best way. You are in the middle of the forest with incredible 360 views. We went to sleep with the sounds of nature. If we come back to the big island we will absolutely stay longer.

    Landry2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • This place is quite the experience! You feel very isolated and organic in this charming, jungle-like setting. The bed is very comfortable, kitchen handy for a small stovetop meal, and the couch is a perfect place to curl up with a book. I was even able to flow through some yoga on the deck! Occasional noice from the neighbors may drift through the window, but it was not an issue for our stay. Would recommend!

    Francesca2020-03-17T00:00:00Z

  • Really enjoyed my tranquil oasis on the lava field! Jade made sure I had everything I needed, and I appreciated how quiet everything was but not too far from Kalapana and Pahoa. I would gladly stay here again!

  • Duuuuuude!!! This place is so magical and rad! Loved being on the lava, plus it was raining and perfect for exploring the lava rock, listening to coqui frogs, and then hanging out on the couch. It was easy to find, the hosts were so detailed in their messages we didn’t have a single issue. We took their suggestion, and ate at Tinshack Bakery, and their breakfast was so good! Honestly, it was a magical experience. Grounding yourself in the rain on the lava field... and staying at a well thought out tiny house?! PERFECTIONNNN!! Huge Mahalo to our hosts.

  • Amazing location and a perfect house. This was my favorite place we stayed while in Hawaii! Definitely recommend to anyone!

    Amber2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • My mom and I had a wonderful stay at the Phoenix house. We witnessed the most beautiful rainbow on the lava field from the house! This house has a beautiful and unique character and I 100% recommend. One little thing was that the constructions around the house blocked the view to watch the sunrise but we still enjoyed our stay!

    Gazelle2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • If this tiny house calls to you, go! The stillness and strength provided by the lava fields is unique and powerful.

    Pea2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to have an epic stay of beautiful views, amazing accommodations, and friendly people... look no farther. Stay here with Jade! Their recommendations were great. Communication was amazing. And it's such a fun idea to live "off the grid".

    Camilla2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • I really enjoyed this place. It’s well away from anything and there’s not really anything to see walking, but it’s the nicest spot I’ve stayed. If you go, I’d drive all the way to Isaac Hale park. The drive is great%,

    Kirsten2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • It was an incredible experience! The design of the house is unique, in both interior and exterior. You can enjoy the lava landscape right from the inside. Besides, it is a good place for star gazing if there is no clouds. We took good pictures at night. Jade was so thoughtful and helpful as we were afraid of the guard dog, she really made us feel at home! Definitely will recommend this house to anyone!

It's also one of the driest places on the east side of Hawaii. Other things to see and do around the area are New Kaimu black sand beach, Kahena black sand beach, the Puna coastal trail to Ha'ena (shipmans beach), hike or drive from McKenzie park to pohoiki surf spot with its newly formed crescent black sand beach and thermal heated healing ponds, Wednesday night market at Uncle Roberts, Sunday is the Makuu farmers market. You can get food and supplies in the hippie outlaw town of Pahoa! I also do tours of the hidden gems of Puna that only locals know and other big tour companies don't do!! Just ask. Staying here provides locals only access to the gardens and free on-site, front row parking to one of nature's coolest displays! Grab a beer, kick back and enjoy this amazing feat of nature.
  • Simple and wonderful

  • Sean’s place is very cool for those looking for seclusion. It is powered by solar panels, on the lava plains surrounded by other small, spaced out houses. Uncle Roberts market is about 5 minutes away. We got to have breakfast here, but didn’t get to fully experience it due to covid shutdown. It sounds like a huge party when they have live music. The nearby town, Pahoa was slow and relaxed with great local food and shops. Sean’s place has a gorgeous rock garden with neat succulents, tropical flowers, statues, and lava rock. We needed batteries for some lanterns and Sean brought some out to us within minutes! Such great hospitality. Thanks again for the wonderful, crazy, memorable stay!

  • We loved this tiny house! The view was amazing and location was pretty awesome. Sleeping at night was so peaceful and we would definitely come back to stay again!

  • What a wonderful stay in this little home in the middle of the lava field. We had a peaceful vacation here, would recommend!

    Léa2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Super close to the black sand beach if your wanting to go there. Seans place is that little getaway your looking for, I was surprised to find that the sleeping area is in its only little space... the shower is also pretty cool. Its great for off grid living :)

    Amanda2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed at Sean and Zorro’s place for one night when we were visiting Big Island. We thought it was a cool place in a super interesting location, and we loved the stargazing, views of the lava fields, and all the interesting off grid features of the house. We are used to camping, backpacking, and other other off grid ways of living and were not bothered by the composting toilet, water jugs, etc. The place was tidy and had some cute features like a book of letters written to Pele re: Pele’s curse. It was a side of the island we wouldn’t have seen or stayed in otherwise, and on the way out we did an amazing drive down to Kalapana and up 137 along the coast which we would highly recommend. We would recommend Sean & Zorro’s place to anyone who likes stargazing, interesting places to stay, and/or off grid living. We would definitely stay here again!

    Katie2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We loved the great variety of plants around the house. The stars are amazing

    Shauna2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I had such a good time staying here! It’s really cute inside and outside. The shower, toilet, kitchen all worked well. We slept well too! Enjoy the stars, enjoy the proximity to the beach. Our advice is to check in before sunset since it is an off-the-grid spot so it’s easier to find in the light!

  • Jade’s place is the most relaxing and peaceful place. The environment is truly an amazing and life changing experience. Highly recommend the Lava Temple. ♥️♥️

    Julie2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was a super lava experience.... a beautiful, bohemian very open air space surrounded all around with lava. It was such a unique place to arrive at. Jades' assistant, Emily was so accurate in describing the drive in " Just keep going forward." It was worth it. We spent hours exploring the lava surrounding the home. Amazing to see life springing up from this black carpet, filled with gold and blue glistening "stuff".

    Adele2020-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • The Magical Lava Temple is perfect for the adventurous person who is looking for a true connection to one of Hawaii’s greatest features- the volcano. This Airbnb really made our vacation special and is something that I will never forget.

  • Come here for inspiration, love, meditation... this space is filled with positive, loving energy and was such a gift to us. We went to Kehena beach and dolphins swam all around us. You can feel Madame Pele's energy all around on the island and in this space. Creation, destruction, powerful, healing energy... what a joyous, magical place. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  • Wonderful and unique experience at Jade’s magic lava temple. Pure outdoor living. The upstairs yoga platform is perfect for yoga, meditation etc or just to relax. Quite basic kitchen equipment but part of the off grid experience. Great advice by Jade of activities off the beaten track, including hidden lava tunnel!

    Felix2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • The temple was one the most amazing place I have ever stayed. It is so peaceful and pretty. Jade did a great job on all the decoration and the whole place is clean and comfortable to stay. She also provided lots of useful local tips and sightseeings advice. I really enjoy the stay.

  • The apartment was light-filled and beautiful - the perfect place to relax in a quiet community that's a little off the beaten path. We loved that it was walking distance to a lovely beach and the place itself was a spotless refuge.

    Jennifer2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • This space is well thought out from the second we pulled in to our archway parking space to the lavish 360 landscaping that surrounded us with Aloha! The exterior and interior are much better than pictured; it's the perfect exotic space to help you feel far away from home on your Big Island vacation! We loved all of the Balinese detail, the various hues of light square windows, the double deck, the hammocks, the living spaces...all of it was better than we could have dreamed! Off the beaten path (about 20 minutes away from Pahao and nestled back in a posh residential pocket) we were surrounded by the well-thought out landscaping and felt all alone the entire stay (except for the few times we'd bump into or hear Carla below who is very pleasant and helpful for anything you might need to know for your visit). A true gem! We will definitely visit again!

The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. Kilauea's latest eruption ended August 6, 2018. We are in UPPER PUNA and were not affected by lava. View new lava fields by air or by hiking to our newest black sand beach, Pohoiki. The area also contains the largest relatively untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and Volcano Village for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts. -Historical Hilo town offers museums, tours, local peeps, markets, craft fairs, Queen Liliokalani Park, zoo, arboritium, caves, gold course, art and local grinds/foods. -Locals Beach Parks: In Keaukaha=Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Black Sands in Naalehu, Green Sands/Papakolea at South Point -Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Keaukaha area. -AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale. -North, South and West Hawaii areas offer adventures for deeper immersion with appropriate planning. -Reference books and maps are provided for your use.
  • Good location for the thrill-seeker looking to stay in the rainforest. Thoughtful touches, including the Japanese soaking tub which was delightful. When issues did come up, like the hot water heater and the electricity going on a brief hiatus, they were dealt with promptly. This is not a resort, it is definitely an off-grid jungle location! Full kitchen repertoire to cook up a meal. Space is cozy and for more than 2 people would not be ideal. They were very attentive to our needs. Very close to Volcanoes National park.

    Cooper2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Eco Hale is a rainforest paradise a few miles off the beaten path of the big island of Hawaii. Prepare to be lulled to sleep at night by the sounds of birds and coqui frogs! The hosts are the best imaginable, the bathroom is spacious, and the bed is comfy and cozy. You'll enjoy the little treats that Kaeo and Karl make available to you, including macadamia nuts and lots of fruit juices. This is a wonderful place to relax and unwind from a full day of sightseeing.

    Cynthia2020-03-07T00:00:00Z
  • Stay off grid in a tropical jungle 🌺 the hosts are super gracious, really kind and thoughtful and we really enjoyed our stay with them at the Eco Hale. The little bungalow is super private with lush landscaping - just a bit cold at the time of year we went (feb) but Kaeo leaves sooo many amenities to make sure you stay warm. The tropical noises at night mixed with rain was probably the most peaceful noise ever experienced. You are about 30 mins outside hilo, 45 outside the Volcano National Park and 2 hours away from Kona but in general the island is huge so you are going to drive a distance to get to any particular place. We enjoyed our stay and would def recommend for luxurious off grid experience.

    Kostadena2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • It’s all true. These folks go out of their way with special touches that most hosts skip. Do they have to supply a bottle of champagne for your anniversary? No, but they do! Does Keao have to bake you breakfast treats and give great local tips? No, but she does so with love. I could go on & on but let’s just say it’s a stay in a jungle paradise at your favorite auntie’s or cousin’s - everything is there for you, including total privacy. We loved it. And then, for their generosity and wisdom ❤️🤙🏻

    Nancy2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • Great place to stay for all your travels on the Hilo side. Easy access to Volcanoes National Park and Hilo too. Small space but comfortable and well laid out in a beautiful garden setting.

    Steven2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • We're generally not big on superlatives, but cannot write an honest review of Kaeo's and Karl's Eco Hale without employing a few. Picture yourself on the lanai in a romantic hut, in the heart of a garden-like rain forest, enjoying a breakfast of various fresh fruit (some of which you can pick within a few feet), homemade cranberry-walnut bread, freshly ground locally grown coffee, listening to the tropical birds (and, of course, the Coqui) with dappled sunshine lighting up the scene. It's difficult if not impossible to come up with a better start to a day. Now envision yourself on the same lanai as evening approaches, sipping wine and snacking on (or dining, we chose to bring dinner "home" most nights to have more time to soak up the peace), then filling the furo with warm water and climbing in for a soul soothing soak. From the warmest of welcomes by Kaeo, to the delicious pupu she provided our first evening, to her little touches in decorating both amazing and authentic, it is an extraordinary experience in a perfect location to explore the island. Kaeo is one of the sweetest and most thoughtful souls we have had the privilege to meet. We've already agreed that we'll return for a third visit with her and Eco Hale.

    Mark2020-02-06T00:00:00Z
  • This is an amazing space in the rain forest, surrounded by trees and flowers. The Eco Hale is well thought out, comfortable, and cozy. Kaeo thinks about every detail that you could imagine. We had three wonderful nights in Eco Hale, listening to rain falling and having dinner in the rain forest. Definitely the highlight of our trip!

Private, newly built bungalow on 3 acres in a lush, ancient mango grove and jungle. 3 mile walk or drive&walk to the new black sand beaches. Screened in lanai with private yard. Easier to get to now due to the new highway 132. Gps is still not up to date so definitely make sure you take the new highway 132 with amazing ocean views.
ALOHA Welcome to Old Hawai’i! Welcome to Puna! Old Hawai’i on the youngest island of them all. Old Hawai’i with the freshest land (still warm!) and black sand beaches on the planet. Old Hawai’i under an ancient mango grove. Around here, the land is green (or black!), the water is blue, and the Aloha is strong. Aged, shaded jungles grow wild and thick out of some kind of story book. Guava. Coconut. Ginger. Noni. Lilikoi vines as thick as your arm. A forest of wild avocado growing from a sea of ferns below. To put it simply: it’s all quite magical. This is where we have built our farm and where hopefully you will be staying. THE BUNGALOW Shaded by 100 foot mangos, down a road of crushed red cinder, you will pass a variety of palms, papaya trees and breadfruit on your way to our 3 acre parcel. Just passed the bananas, across from the Moringa tree is where you’ll find your digs for the night. Notice the Bird’s Nest Ferns growing in the mango just outside your lanai (porch). Personally, I’m fascinated with that Cercropia tree actually growing inside the saddle of the mango, dangling its roots all the way to the jungle floor. It’s a tree inside a tree! But you’ll see. And then you’ll see something else. Something new. Maybe the Passion Flowers are in bloom. Maybe a heavy rain has brought out the moss again. Or maybe you’re already asleep under the ceiling fan, lulled by the gentle wall of sound emanating always from the ‘āina (land) around you. Either way -whatever you’re looking for- it’s a good spot. A quiet spot. A private spot. With over 100 feet between the bungalow and our family home, not to mention a fair share of trees and whatnot- AND the fact that the buildings were consciously built facing opposing directions- you can rest assured that you will have ample privacy, both visually and audibly. I have never measured it out exactly, but your bungalow also has its own “yard” that I would venture to be around a quarter acre (.101 hectare) or so. It is cleared, as is most of the acreage, and dips off into a forest of Strawberry Guava trees, mango and plenty others. The garden and lawn are still establishing around the cottage itself, but if green grass is what you desire- sun or shade- there’s about an acre of it in the front end of the property calling for ya. Frisbee? Yoga? Nap? Kick back under the mango. It’s all good. On August 1, 2018, the last nail went in. This bungalow is an extremely new build, fresh as the fruit at Maku’u Farmers’ Market. At 550 square feet (about 51 square meters ), we designed these accommodations with the single traveller or couple in mind. -Comfortable -Peaceful -Clean -Platform bed (queen) -Ceiling fan -WIFI -Bar top with stools -4 burner stove -Kettle -Pots -Pans -Dishes -Flatware -Refrigerator -Freezer -Coffee -Tea -Hot shower -Toilet -Vanity -Screened porch with seating and dining bar -Locking, sliding glass doors -Screened windows with locking glass -Electric light -Lots of natural light -Stays cool in the heat And did I mention we are entirely off-grid? That’s right! So all utilities are with energy conservation and sustainability in mind. Even our water is collected from the rain (and then filtered through a 5 micron, 30 micron, and UV filter of course!) But don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything differently. Take a long shower. Drink straight from the tap. Use the lights. Charge your laptop. Run the fan until you’re all cooled off and probably asleep again. We want for our guests what we wanted for ourselves when we moved out here: A clean and efficient, relaxing escape. Did I mention to also be within nature without having to battle against it? Because I meant to. Our intent was to live comfortably within nature. We believe this bungalow achieves that. In fact, we know it does. THE GROUNDS AND SURROUNDING Just as ours is, most parcels along the road are 3 acres. Some have been cleared and replanted with orchards to be farmed, some grow wild, and yet others boast sprawling green lawns with painted cottages. One way or another, I consider all the properties around here to be organic farms -not just because they look like you’d think an organic farm should look- but because most folks living on them are impressively conscientious as to what goes into the ground and where their food comes from. It makes for a quiet jungle road of like-hearted botanists (mostly amateur, like myself) and pretty gardens. Rock walls that were here long before us push through the roots of a Hala tree, orchids grow unattended in the canopy above, and coconuts roll in the street. Many properties are hidden but for their driveway by strategically grown clumps of bamboo, Heliconias, or maybe just the jungle itself. Walking down the road does not therefor feel like walking down a neighborhood street at all but more like strolling down a fantastical jungle path where you are the only person in the world. The difference being that there are people in the area should you need them. Best of both worlds really. The illusion of solitude with the safety of numbers. And the solitude isn’t totally an illusion either. Its quiet out here. It’s called the BIG Island for a reason and Puna is still very wild in many beautiful ways. If you like wandering without the worry, there’s plenty to get lost in around here. Even at night, the sky is some of the biggest you’ll ever see. There’s zero light pollution. Full moons are unreal. And if the moon isn’t out at all, well then the cosmos will be illuminated like you wouldn’t believe. The stars feel like they’re just above the trees. Go out on that lawn I was talking about. Bring a blanket. Now look up. Laterz. We have a variety of fruit growing on the property. Some are far more established than others. We ask that guests not pick the fruit themselves, though we are happy to share when the season provides. Also, there is conveniently an organic fruit stand just down the street that might have what you’re looking for. Maybe a 10 minute stroll? And since we’re talking fruit: WASH AND INSPECT ALL FRUIT BEFORE EATING. Just trust me. 99% of the time it’s all good. But that 1% will get ya. Guests that plan on using the kitchen for most of their meals should purchase supplies in Pāhoa Town or even in Hilo on their way from the airport. Also within walking distance (less than 2 miles) are some idyllic tide pools good for soaking when the tides are right. There is another ocean pool a bit further down the way (another mile or so), but I’d recommend taking a car or bike instead of the long, sweaty walk back home. Ocean lookout opportunities and jungle paths are plentiful in the immediate area, and if the new lava flow is what you’re curious about, that happens to be less than 2 miles away as well. NEW BEACHES We are extremely grateful for the new black sand beaches, and as it turns out, we are the closest neighborhood to them. Walking distance. Maybe 3 miles each way? They are fantastic, and totally worth the hike- so remember to pack some shoes! STUFF TO DO I’m sure that if you’re considering Puna for your vacation then you’ve done other research and know just how much the Big Island has to offer. To try and consolidate it all into this write up, even for Puna alone, would never do it any justice. With that said: SUNDAYS: Just outside Pāhoa Town, is the Maku’u Farmers’ Market. It is the biggest and most celebrated farmers’ market on the island. There you will find everything from the freshest island produce to the freshest prepared meals, ranging from Hawaiian style Poké bombs to burritos to açaí bowls. Thai food? Yup. Indian? Double yup. There are t-shirts and orchids and jewelry and chiropractors. There are carvings and kava and massages and honey. Shaded seating is available along with tables. Sit and enjoy some of the cuisine. Take a minute for the live music. Or just get out of the sun and watch the people. After all, it’s Puna! There will most definitely be something interesting to see. ;) WEDNESDAYS: Starting at 5pm, down Kalapana way, is where you’ll find Uncle Robert’s. On the shores of the 1983 flow, every week a large gathering of people come from all over for the dancing, the drinking, the music and the food. The fun. The goods for sale. The people! It is a family friendly, everyone friendly place where you’re sure to have a good time. Parking on the street is free. Or for 3 bucks park a lot closer and take a short walk over da lava to the black sand beach. The wind is really wonderful out there. Then stay for the party. POSSIBLE CONCERNS GENERAL SECURITY/THEFT: I heard a lot of people voice concerns about visiting Puna far before Fissure 8 was erupting. Funny thing is, not one of those people ever lived in Puna. Some had never even been. In my experience, the people of Puna are some of the kindest, most interesting, gentle people I’ve ever come across. Maybe it used to be worse? I don’t know, I wasn’t here. Maybe it used to be better?! Haha. Is there petty theft here and there? Yup. Have we ever experienced it? Nope. Have some of our friends? Yup. Do I worry? Nope. The people and experiences of Puna come in all flavors as does the entire human species and spectacle; in that regard it is no different than anywhere else in the world. Or wait, are you just asking if there’s a lot of weirdos and stuff? Oh yeah for sure! And if you’ve chosen Puna of all places to visit, well then I bet you’re kinda weird too. ;) Look, all I can say is that we feel so safe and love it so much that we decided to build a life and raise our tiny kids out here. I hope that you will feel that same sense of aloha as well. In conclusion: Is it safe? Yes. Absolutely. Just don’t tell anyone. LAVA: For now, and as far as we can see in the near future, the flow has stopped. The closest it came to us was just under a mile away. Thanks to the trade winds, our air was always clean. It remains clean now. Some say it’s the cleanest in the world thanks to the thousands of miles of ocean filtration. Was it scary? Yes. Did we evacuate? Yes and no but mostly no. Though some blockades still remain in lower Puna, all is getting back to normal. There is still so much to do and see! HURRICANES: Hurricane season is from June to November. It’s true that the weather can become extremely heavy if a storm system is in the area, but that’s not really the norm for that stretch of time. Even if it was, I’m not worried about the bungalow. It is as solid and watertight as can be. So long as you are here, there should be no issue with heavy weather and your accommodations. In such an event, a generator may have to be run to compensate for the solar panels, but since we are already off grid, we do not worry much about loss of power or water in an emergency. Honestly though, hurricane season is usually far more sunny days than stormy. After all, it’s mostly during summer in Hawai’i! FIRE ANTS: It is true that there are Fire Ants on the Big Island. It is also true that it’s a big problem. But because I spray, they are not a problem here at our farm. It is the one spray that I use on the land and not very often at that, averaging out to be around 3 times a year. It is not very toxic and dissipates quickly, but I want to be open about it for those that refuse or have reactions to any and all insecticides, no matter which form. To be clear though, you’re not usually going to feel or find a fire ant unless you go digging in the ground, hacking back jungle, or climbing in the trees. Basically, don’t go looking for them. What’s it feel like? Everyone reacts differently. Really they do. To me it feels like Stinging Nettles and then goes away within the hour. Which is lucky since I spend half my life rolling around with them. In conclusion: It’s not a big deal when it comes to enjoying yourself out here. COQUI FROGS: Honestly, I think they sound beautiful. Like birdsong at night. Sure it can be loud, especially when you’re used to no sound at all or the city or traffic instead- but to me and many others, it lulls us to sleep. And they’re only loud like that when it’s been raining -which I know is impossible to predict- but my point is rather that they’re not loud EVERY night, which is good news for light sleepers. If you think jungle sounds might disturb your slumber, I would suggest bringing ear plugs or whatever else might aide you, because I promise, there’s no turning them off. Again, everyone is different, but personally I love ‘em. BOAR: Yes. There are many boar in the area. Mama boar. Papa boar. And even itty bitty baby boar. Luckily, we have not gotten them on the farm. This is because a lot of our border is raised from the land around it, making it difficult for the animals to climb up or it’s simply just not worth their trouble. But they are in the area, I can promise you that. If you see one, just don’t approach it. Snap a photo. Keep your distance. You’re fine. Only if you go stealing baby boars from mama boars are you gonna find yourself having an altercation, and honestly, if that happens…that’s on you. The biggest danger that boars present is their nasty habit of causing car accidents. Pigs dart out in the road whenever you least expect it. Day? Night? Doesn’t matter. The good news is that you can significantly reduce your chances of hitting boar -or anything else for that matter- by driving with consideration to the world around you- which I’m sure you already do! IN CONCLUSION Hope to see ya soon! And if not, may all your travels be wondrous both in ways imagined and beyond. It is a beautiful world with much to see. Aloha.
Explore Puna on old Hawai’i, the youngest island of them all with the freshest—still warm—land and black sand beaches on the planet. The bungalow and family home have trees and space between them and they face opposing directions for utmost privacy.
  • Awesome spit in an awesome location. All the amenities you need and then some. Great communication with the host. We stayed just one night but absolutely loved it

    Aleenah2020-03-29T00:00:00Z
  • I loved my stay! When booking this Airbnb keep in mind that it is 45 minutes from the airport so renting a car for the duration of the trip (preferably a Jeep or truck) will save you money and time.

    Brandy2020-03-23T00:00:00Z
  • Jason and Guthrie's place surpassed all of our expectations. The space itself was wonderful, beautifully furnished and stocked with all of the appropriate amenities. Being in a more secluded area, we fell asleep every night to the sounds of nature, a welcome retreat after spending the previous few days in Honolulu. Will definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Hawai'i!

    Annalisa2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • Jason and Guthrie have a perfect jungle oasis with all the modern necessities you’d ever want! If you’re looking for a quiet space to enjoy then this is for you! Our only regret was not staying longer :)

    Amanda2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • This jungle bungalow was everything we could have asked for in our first night in Big Island. We arrived late at night, and Jason and Guthrie were excellent communicators throughout our arrival. The cozy space is modern, spotless and has all amenities you need! We loved sitting out on the porch and listening to the rain and sounds of the rainforest (the coqui frogs were singing their hearts out)! Awakening the next morning to the sounds of a rooster and taking a morning stroll with their kitties was also such a great experience. We would love to return in the future and 100% recommend staying here!

    Emily2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stayed two nights at the jungle bungalow and we wish we could have stayed for weeks. The drive through the new lava fields and then down the jungle road make for an amazing experience in and of itself. The property is so quiet and the crocking frogs were strangely peaceful. We love to camp and be outside so it felt like a night in the tent, only in a comfy bed with great amenities. We also really appreciate their list of things to do and places to eat. We ended up grabbing food at Kaleo's and it was amazing food! Guthrie and Jason were also quick to respond and we loved that everything you could need was found in the bungalow. IF we find ourselves on the Big Island again, we will definitely be back!

    Elizabeth2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Jason & Guthrie’s place, it was quiet and remote which was exactly what we were looking for. It’s in a great location–very close to the Mermaid Pools, the new black sand beach, and several other interesting destinations. Just the road there is magical–it’s truly in a jungle! We ended up cooking the majority of our meals at the bungalow since there were limited options in town (and we like cooking). The facilities at the house are new and were more than adequate for our needs. There's fantastic stargazing, a super peaceful environment, and on top of all this, the unit is off-grid! It’s so cool and inspiring that they’ve built all this with sustainability considerations. On our way out of town, we spotted this beautiful sight of some sprouting coconuts left in the nearby lava fields. This area is a special place where the people here have endured the power of nature and totally respect it. We would absolutely stay here again.

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • Cary's has a hidden rainforest gem! And she is an outstanding host. The place is zen simple allow you to rest and rejuvenate while taking in the sights and sounds of the native ohia forest with ferns, orchids, birds and the feeling of being totally in the forest. Outdoor shower was very private and enjoyable as the bed was comfy and cozy. Secure parking and worth going over a little bumpy road to get to! Her handmade soap is awesome too!

    Robert2020-04-15T00:00:00Z
  • I had a fantastic stay at Cary's. The location is a little out of the way, but makes up for that in charm and amenities. The tropical rain-forest setting is surreal - you might rub your eyes and wonder if you're dreaming. There are beautiful flowers, exotic ferns and plant life surrounding you. The bathroom was super clean, as was the room itself. There is a mini-burner for heating water, a french press for coffee, pretty much everything one needs for accommodation. I had a pleasant and memorable stay and would recommend it to anyone. Cary was an excellent host!

    Michael2020-03-26T00:00:00Z
  • I was already excited to stay at this spot, but walking up to Cary's place nestled in the rain forest was magical. Cary is a traveler herself, so each item in this cozy, open-air ohana was clearly carefully chosen. I cooked most meals on the camp stove, loved the outdoor shower, and the bed was super comfortable. Cary was very thoughtful about giving me privacy, but was also very welcoming and provided some great local recommendations for hikes and beaches to explore. I'm so grateful that she's created this magical spot for travelers to visit, and that I got to spend a few nights there. Mahalo!!

Studio suite on the east side of the island of Hawaii (Big Island) with more facilities and at a lower price than area hotels!
Pahoa Village is a quaint little town on the southeastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii. This is in the lush, green Puna region of the island, where there are fewer tourist traps and more of the “old” Hawaii of yesteryear. Pahoa has wooden sidewalks and storefronts dating back 100 years, and is a town time seems to have forgotten. Tourists are delighted with Pahoa's fine restaurants, including Thai, Mexican, Chinese and Tuscany Italian... some of the best on the island! There are funky little shops and restaurants, a Sunday farmer's market featuring live music and fresh local fruits and vegetables. And Pahoa is home to the Akebono Theater, which is the oldest in the state! The village of Pahoa is situated in the middle of some of the most beautiful, tropical surroundings, near Kehena Beach which has snorkeling, swimming, surfing and beachcombing. There are lots of unbelievably beautiful crystal clear tide pools to explore and a thermal “hot” pond. Pahoa makes a great Hawaiian getaway, far from the crowds, yet within easy reach of attractions such as Lava Trees State Monument Park, the city of Hilo and a scenic drive to the Kailua-Kona area on the other side of the island.
  • The airbnb is easy to find and located near to downtown Pahoa. Plenty of places to shop and eat around. The house itself is quaint and features all you'd need for a short stay. Served our purposes nicely. Mahalo

  • Ophelia’s place is conveniently located right downtown Pāhoa. We love to stay here when we visit Hawaii. The place is roomy, has full kitchen and two separate bedrooms with queen beds in them. There is also a large dining area and a living room with comfy couches and a tv. The value is outstanding! We will definitely be staying here again in the future.!

    Erica2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect “home base” for my mom and I on our travels. Had everything we needed to make simple meals, and lots of space. Nothing fancy, but a perfect place us to return to after a day of adventuring the island. Also, the new lava flow, and Kalapana night market are close by!

    Sarah2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Good host who is responsive to messages! Great value in a convenient location if you’re visiting the Pahoa area!

    Matt2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A very comfortable stay, accurately advertised and our host was exceedingly prompt in arriving to welcome us and share helpful information. Enjoyed being serenaded by coqui frogs as evening progressed.

    Judy2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This little house has quirky charm that fits Pahoa and lots of room for guests to spread out. It has a large kitchen/dining room, two full-size bedrooms, and a living room with a TV that gets a gazillion cable stations. It's on a main drag--an easy walk to a supermarket, restaurants, and a bank. As a result, there's some street and neighbor noise, but we'd definitely come back.

    Sylvia2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay. It was everything we needed for our weekend trip. It’s about 30 mins to Hilo, easy drive. Located in a cute town. Easy to get to the major cities and sights. It was extremely clean and had comfortable beds. I would recommend anyone to stay here.

  • The hosts were very friendly and super helpful, the kids enjoyed making s'mores and the hot tub nested in nature was super relaxing, this cute place beats any fancy hotel in my opinion, we enjoyed what I would call, luxury camping, we will be back in the future for sure!

  • Amazing space. If you have the chance to stay here, do so. Great value. The cottage is right next to their house, but I hardly ever heard noise from them and whenever I saw them they were incredibly nice. Ashley was super quick to respond to the questions we had while we were there, and they gave us plenty of privacy. The space is very very well-done, and lots of little thoughtful touches that added up to make the space so wonderful. The shower especially was super cool.

We’ll be back!

  • Katherine's place is great. Close enough to Volcanoes national park but also far enough away to escape everything. It's nestled in a beautiful rainforest but is 15mins down a bumpy gravel road, but it's worth it when you get there. She was very welcoming, check in/out was easy, the room and bathroom were fine and had all the essentials. If you're looking to relax away from tourists, this is the place. Oh and they grow amazing bananas and lychee there!

  • Ashley’s cottage in the jungle was serene, peaceful, and very lush! This was a welcome experience coming from the desert. The bathroom itself was like a day in the spa. A lovely location to relax and enjoy some personal time on our vacation.

This beautiful and spacious 2 story 3 bedroom house set in a very safe neighborhood is set on a hill with a wonderful view of Keaau's lush land and the ocean view! This house has plenty of spots to gaze at the view including a large patio and large family room with a 65" TV, and an eating area inside. The style is light bright and upscale, the high ceilings are finished natural wood and there is an archway that adds to the house's unique beautiful feel.
  • Great place to stay! Clean & comfortable. I’d definitely recommend.

  • Daryl’s space is in a great location for exploring Hilo or heading down to Pahoa and Poihiki. Daryl was very communicative and had some great local tips as well!

  • Very nice stay and very welcoming familly. We had everything we needed. Juste a 20min drive from hilo. There was a lot of restaurant and shop neer by. I recommand :)

  • Good price quality ratio comparing with the prices in the island. Good location to visit National Volcano Parks and waterfalls. Daryl gave us good tips and he was always open to answer our doubts. Room was equipped with cutlery, oven, microwave and Netflix, HBO... So after long journeys hiking it was nice to have a complete room.

    Ignacio2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Nice room in family home.

    Roger2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Very nice stay at Daryl's! Even though it is a room in their house, we had our privacy. We felt very comfortable. It was my boyfriend who communicated more with Daryl since he knows English better than I do. Daryl saved us on the entry price of the volcano park which we appreciated. :) A very smiling man and his wife also advised us a few places. In short, we certainly recommend this place which is perfectly located for visiting the east coast of the island. Thank you very much !!

  • Kieba's place is 'exactly what it says on the tin'. It's off grid living at its finest. Pāhoa is great place to be. Very alternative and Kool. Definitely the quiet life. Big Island life at it's most laid back, whilst having access to amenities. Vehicle is an advantage.

Hosted by artists who love color. Not a beige home. We are on Railroad Ave, our home next to a property that was 1 of original train stations. Legend is that people threw out their mango seeds, so this part of HPP is part Mango grove. It is a kipuka, meaning the last lava flow, went around this area, like an island, and therefore has more growth/dirt.
Hawaiian Paradise Park is zoned as Ag land. We still have wild bamboo orchids that grow along the road. We are the orchid isle! Our road is not paved yet, though many in HPP are. Each lot is an acre. Residents might have livestock, exotic birds, there are palm orchards, and nurseries, etc. The ocean is 20 blocks from us. We go there to walk, enjoy
  • Really nice and cozy place. The outdoor kitchen is perfect and we enjoyed the time at this nice place and had good conversations with Lonny who is a really nice guy. Thank you!

    Thomas2020-03-25T00:00:00Z
  • Lonny was so kind and helpful! We were told where a beach was nearby to look at the water on the rocks, and the outdoor kitchen was nice too. Beware of an animal coming and eating fruits left on the counter at night! :)

    Andrew2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Lonny is great host! He has a wonderful home, beautiful landscaping, friendly dogs, a gangster cat carl with a super chicken that dishes out fresh eggs for your breakfast. Carl is a gangster, just a super loving cat! His dogs know exactly how to give those puppy eyes. The bed is cozy, living area comfy. Kitchen area is outside and you'll see cool artwork every place you look. Very awesome experience overall. I highly recommend staying.

People can stay my house 12years or older. Please email me if you bring kids under 11years old.

This home is located deep in Hawaiian Beaches subdivision and is close to the ocean. This home is simple, clean, and safe. The room and most of the house has been recently redone. There was a bit of a misty smell, but I didnt mind that as much as my husband did. Great lock on the door even though it was a safe neighborhood. The shower was very loud and squeaky. But overall everything was great Thanks for a great stay.

Recipient of the Airbnb "SuperHost" award for consistently high guest reviews The Bungalow is situated on a 1 3/4 acre of jungle in rural East Hawaii. We are located between Hilo and Pahoa and close to whale watching, perfect for long walks along the cliffs at Kaloli point and for listening to the Hawaiian birds singing.
The Bungalow has a covered Lanai for enjoying the outdoors and looks out to a Banana grove. There is a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker with tea, sugar and coffee for the guests to use. The bedroom is large and the on suite bathroom has a tiled shower with a window where you can view nature while you shower. Every window has a view of the jungle outside and the bedroom has a large closet and a queen bed. You can lie on the bed and look out the French doors onto your private lanai.
The neighborhood is quiet and very green with palms, flowers and no traffic or traffic lights.
  • Great communication and stay, thank you!

    Laura2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • We enjoyed our stay here. It was just far enough out of town that we felt pretty remote. We loved the sound of the frogs at night...didn’t even need a sound machine! The local tips and commutation from Gav were wonderful. We ate at Ning’s, Pele’s and the Tin Shack twice each! It’s about a 15 min drive into Pahoa from the bungalow, which felt shorter each day. The space was spotless and we loved the fresh fruit that was left for us. Only warning is to watch for bees in your shoes if you leave them outside. There were a few bees around the doorway and one was hiding under my sandal strap and got me when I put my sandal on, but my fault for not checking. Luckily I’m not allergic. Overall we really enjoyed our stay!

    Joy2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • I love the setting! Beautiful flowers and trees surrounding a comfy bungalow. The space is simple , clean, and welcoming. The coffee is delicious!

  • Gav looked after us for our trip to Keeau; her communication is excellent and you won’t find a better space for your budget! Fresh property fruit was also a huge bonus! Location is perfect midway point between Pahoa and Hilo, very close to tourist stops but also perfect for quiet relaxation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay even though it was short! Highly recommend staying with Diana and Lando!

  • We loved our stay on the Big Island, and the bungalo worked great for our trip! We were only in the area for 3 days, and the location made it very convenient for our visits to the National Park and other excursions, somewhat midway between Hilo and the park. We found a grocery store and a good Thai place nearby, about 6 mile drive, and it was about 20 minutes to get into Hilo for more places to eat, etc.. The privacy of the bungalo was great, and we loved sitting on the covered porch, enjoying the fresh air, the lush view surrounding the property and the soundscape of all the local creatures. It felt remote while being fairly close to everything we needed, only a short drive away. Car is necessary for getting around, but that is probably the case for the island generally. Food prep is limited for this spot, so good to plan accordingly if cooking is on the agenda.

Enjoyed them both.

We were in a Chevrolet Spark and we had no problems with the road, what's more, we toured the entire island in our Tiny Car. There is television and Wi-Fi, although sometimes it doesn't work very well. Highly recommended price vs. quality. The shower doesn't come out very hot if you turn on the entire faucet, but if you turn the water flow down a little bit, it's perfectly hot. We had a nice time in the tiny house.

  • Great place to stay if you want to stay away from overpriced Hotels and experience the real Hawai.

  • Nice hosts, offered several cost effective tips for enjoying the island!

    Tyler2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • It certainly is a tiny cabin. Ceilings were no problem for my 6'6" husband though. It is about 25 mins away from Volcanoes National Park and 45 mins from Hilo. GPS does not take you there but the directions Jen provides made it easy for us to find it even in the dark while raining. Thanks for a great stay!

Studio suite on the east side of the island of Hawaii (Big Island) with more facilities and at a lower price than area hotels!
Aloha suite has a king size bed and a twin bed in desperate bedroom. Small kitchenette with everything you need except food and no stove. We provide electric 2inch deep fryer. Pancake/eggs.bacon grill. Rice cooker coffee maker . micro wave etc. Cute porch to watch town go by. Lol. Restaurants everywhere. Laundry mat across the street they also do your laundry for you at a cost. Olympic stretch amazing free pool caddy corner from our inn. 711 next door . near by black sand beach and hot ponds open to public free 15 min drive. Welcome to real Hawaii.☺
There are lots of unbelievably beautiful crystal clear tide pools to explore and a thermal “hot” pond along with the free black sand beaches open to the public. Pahoa makes a great Hawaiian getaway, far from the crowds, yet within easy reach of attractions such as Lava Trees State Monument Park, the city of Hilo and a scenic drive to the Kailua-Kona area on the other side of the island. The big island is not that big. From our inn you can go around the entire island in one full day. You can snow board on the mountain and go caving in Hilo . go to pahoa soak in theraputic hot ponds. snorkel. Enjoy black sand beaches in pahoa all this and so much more on the big.island. "Island Paradise Inn" is an excellent central location to make home base for your visit.
  • Super convenient location, walking distance to a bunch of cafes, bars, etc. Clean and comfortable, only complaint was that the bathroom was just a sliding door with no sound proofing :-) It was also a bit noisy, our first night there was someone was yelling outside until the morning. But overall a good base to explore the area.

  • Ophelia is a great host who will do the extra step to make you feel welcomed. The place we stayed in was directly by the road so was noisy depending on traffic but close to everything you need in the middle of Pahoa. It is a good value and Ophelia's pizza is yuuummmm! Room has all you need to stay and get you going. Recommending!

    Zuzana2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, right in downtown Pahoa. Clean and comfortable. The noise from the road was notable but the place is a great value and Ophelia is absolutely delightful.

  • A great place to stay while getting to know the locals. Everything is within walking distance.

  • Location, location, location! Everything you need is within walking distance. You'll feel like being in the epicenter of its charming and vibrant neighborhood. Quant coffee shops, pleasant shop keepers, and across the street you'll find a bar, restaurants, laundromat, and a hair salon. Ophelia's staff are responsive and professional. The room we stayed in has a kitchenette, plenty of towels, and the bed is very comfortable. I would stay again.

  • Jen was a great host and her family waited and guided me to their place when I was lost looking for their place late at night. Her cabin is a secluded place where I found my own zen, away from the stress of city life. It was a soothing retreat for 2 weeks.

    Landro2020-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • Jen is an EXCELLENT Communicator. If you want excellent value and also be able to experience the beauty of the Big Island you will want to stay at Jean's cabin. She had really nice touches throughout the cabin. The sound of the jungle at night is intoxicating and beautiful. Jean's directions to the cabin were perfect. I'm hoping to visit again soon! Lottie2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • This is a place unlike any other. It is about 5 miles hidden in the forest. If you’re looking for a place to stay away from it all, this is it! We stayed in cabin #3 which was like a treehouse for adults! It was great! It has everything you need, including shower, toilet, bed, small fridge, microwave. I would recommend messaging Jen about sending her location via text. It may help with finding the place a bit better on maps, rather than using the address listed.

    Sarah2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for value! Basic stay, close to Volcanoes National Park and very clear info on directions and communication. We didn’t get to meet Jen, but met her very helpful and handy husband.

  • Great value for the price. It’s a cabin experience with a camping-like feel. It’s definitely a rustic setting and in quite a remote area with a rough road to get to it but it did have all the basic necessities and you can’t beat the price!

It was a delight to hear all the bird and frog noises, especially while taking a relaxing bath in the Balinese bathhouse. The area is great for exploring. Our small country home, "Hale Ohia Melemele", is named after the yellow ohia trees on the property. Blossoms are special We are located on the East side of the Big Island in Hawaiian Paradise Park 16 miles from Hilo and only 2.7 miles to beautiful and dramatic rocky coastline. Because we are in a rural area it is best to have a car unless you are a seasoned hiker. Bo'sun is a perfect for a single person traveling, a couple or an addition to the Hideaway if you are 3 to 5 persons.
The Bo'sun Bunk is a screened 8'x 12' private room. It has a raised full futon (bunk bed style), a table and chairs. It shares a small bathroom, outdoor shower, laundry and Lanai, (screened porch with large table, small frig, bar area) with our hideaway that sleeps two or three.
Eastern shore of the big island is rural with a feel of "old Hawaii". Hawaiian Paradise Park is a community south of Hilo. It sits on the Maku'u shore which offers a beautiful view on the eastern side of the Big Island. It's been said that this is one of the best places to watch humpback whales while they are here for the winter. We are approximately two miles inland. Take a cup of tea or coffee and sit and watch the sunrise or a glass of wine to watch the glow of sunset off the clouds.

  • One of the kindest couple I have ever met in my life. Their home is right in the middle of a small rain forest and you will be delighted in the finest details they have put together. You will find immense peace within the huge variety of plants within the house, or the loud croaking of coqui frog that put me to sleep every night. The shower is in an open but enclosed area right under the blue sky, which in itself was a beautiful experience for me. The knowledge Terry has, amazed me throughout my stay - local sightseeing, history, flora and fauna or even reading actual maps. The room I stayed in was very spacious, comfortable and ensured my privacy. If you are staying in Hilo side of the island, you just cannot miss this experience. Thank You, Terry and Nancy. Definitely visiting you both some time in future.

  • The Puna Rainforest Retreat is a must for anyone traveling to this part of the island. The cabins are simple, immaculate and very well cared for with gorgeous views of the property. The grounds are probably the most unique we’ve seen on the island. Beautiful flora and fauna and multiple steam vents on the property reminding you that we’re here on the volcano. The unique hot tubs are naturally heated by the steam, and are not to be missed. Jacklynn and her partner were very welcoming and they gave us all the necessary information for enjoying our stay including the beautiful steam vent trail. Hoping to return to this tropical paradise again.

    Colleen2020-03-24T00:00:00Z
  • Our two night stay at Jacklynn’s place was great. The property was beautiful and unique. The yellow cottage was comfortable and perfect for our needs. Check in was easy as well. The location was perfect for our exploration of the Pahoa and Hilo areas. I would definitely recommend this Airbnb.

    Sally2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jacklynn’s property is beautiful! Even though the furniture in the Yellow Hibiscus is a bit different than the pictures, it is still cute! Check-in was easy, cottage was very clean, and in a great location— just a short drive to town! Our favorite part was soaking in the tubs and taking in the steamy surroundings. Very healing!Would recommend staying here if you’re on the East side of the island!

  • My friend and I had a wonderful stay at the yellow cabin for a few nights. Check-in was easy. The property was amazing and so relaxing. If and when I return to the area, I will for sure stay here again!

  • Beautiful location, hot tubs were amazing, peaceful, loved every minute, & very attentive host. Thank-you!

    Lorena2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • To say we loved it here, would be an absolute understatement! Jacklynn’s property was a little slice of heaven. Felt like we were at a spa retreat. This property is so peaceful and has qualities that show you how very small you truly in the grand scheme of things, as well as how much beauty there still is in this world. Our gecko visitors were so enjoyable to watch, and being lulled to sleep by the hypnotic sounds of the coqui frogs and rain showers was soul cleansing. The grounds are very well kept; you can tell that Jacklynn and Elijah truly take pride in maintaining this property. There are cottages with other guest nearby, but it feels very private. Stargazing in the steam-vent-heated hot tubs is an absolute must! Wish we could have stayed longer. We will be back

Studio home on Hawaii's Big Island, 5 minute drive to Kehena Beach. This bargain-priced getaway is perfect for 1 or 2 people wanting a stay of 31 days or longer. It consists of a 12' x 16' bedroom w/queen sized bed and 8' x 16' open air (but covered) kitchen/lanai with a distant view of the Pacific ocean. Wifi & TV with Roku included. Built 2017, new to Airbnb. 5 minute drive to beautiful black sand clothing-optional Kehena beach Hawaii 14.25% accommodation tax (GET + TAT) INCLUDED in price
You have full use of the home and land - it is NOT a house/apartment in someone's backyard; exclusive use of kitchen/bathroom/shower/toilet/washing machine.
Kalapana Seaview Estates is a friendly neighborhood with a mix of retirees, vacation homes, full-time locals and part year residents. It's quiet and peaceful with amazing night time stars against a black sky and doesn't have the tourist crowds of Oahu, Maui or Kona. Short drive (or walk) to black sand Kehena Beach
  • Alan's place is beautiful, and if you're looking for a quiet, secluded getaway, you cannot beat the location. The house itself is new, sleek, and very well made--it's like a tree house with an outdoor kitchen and detached bath house. I LOVED having this indoor/outdoor lifestyle during my stay, as the elements wash over you constantly. The bedroom is small, but bright and airy with huge windows on two walls and a screen door. I literally woke up to rainbows every other morning! The best part (at least for me) is the close proximity to Kehena Beach, five minutes away by car, and maybe a 20-30 minute walk. The neighborhood is quiet and safe, but also hosts a drum circle gathering on Sundays (on the lawn at the front of the community, which is about 1/2 mile down the road), and is ten minutes from Kalani, where there are a number of classes and ecstatic dance 2x per week. The closest groceries are about 25 mins away in Pahoa, so best to stock up there or in Hilo and root down in the place, which is easy to do as it's so cozy. Alan was extremely responsive and helpful, but never in my way--a great and thoughtful host. I enjoyed every minute of my time there and can't wait to get back. If you like simple living and/or camping, you will love the serenity of this place, as you get the best of both worlds. Aloha~
