Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

Bungalow 252 is a secluded hilltop cedar home getaway. Magnificent 130 degree view of the ocean, Mt. Baker and the Cascades. Hardwood flooring. Eagles, bats, deer and raccoons abound. BBQ, watch boats and occasionally orcas from the deck. Nicely stocked full kitchen. Wood stove. Pod coffee maker with coffee, chai, hot chocolate. 3D HDTV with streaming. Twelve miles past Eastsound on the Horseshoe Highway and 20 miles from the ferry landing. One of a kind place filled with various nautical artifacts. Well stocked kitchen upstairs and very cozy downstairs. The sun deck was amazing. Gail and Butch were very welcoming. The cabin is built on top of a pier so it is fun to see water raising and receding under it. The pier is private but there is light traffic of people going to and from their boats during daytime. (Less than 1 per hour)

We loved the location & solitude of the neighborhood. There were at least a dozen deer who passed through the yard & spent time sunning in the adjacent neighbor's yard for the afternoon. We were disappointed that the gate leading to the fenced backyard was broken/ knocked down & blocking the entry to the yard; therefore, we were unable to utilize it with our dog. In communication with Anita, she was not aware of it. The home had a good layout & was adequately cleaned with the exception of the pots, pans & dishes in the kitchen. We think perhaps the dishwasher isn't doing the job expected & guests were just putting things away unclean.
