Sunset Ranch is an acre lot at the far southeast corner of Marathon, TX that backs up to the Combs ranch, facing the south, which allows for unobstructed views of sunrises and sunsets from the 700 sf covered porch. The studio is well laid out for up to 4 guests. There is a queen size bed and two full size cots, which can be stacked as bunk beds. Marathon is 40 minutes from the park entrance of Big Bend National Park, and it is a natural launch point to explore the true nature of West Texas.
“We stayed at Jim’s as our home base for a long weekend spent exploring Big Bend. What a gorgeous place to come home to after a long day of hiking. We loved playing music over the sound system while we made coffee in the morning, then laying on the patio birdwatching with the binoculars (what an amazing thoughtful touch) and watching the sunset at night. We absolutely recommend Jim’s place to anyone visiting Big Bend.”
Our lovely, blue-green house was built from a Sears kit in the 1920s. It has been extensively remodeled in the last few years and is a wonderful, comfortable place to stay during your visit to the Big Bend area. My wife and I actually stayed in this house years ago, on one of our first trips to Big Bend, and fell in love with it. We had the opportunity to come out to the region for work and knew we wanted to make this house our home.
“Stayed here while visiting Big Bend this past week, unfortunately they closed the park the day before we got there so we didn’t end up going, but Tom let me know ahead of time in case we were trying to go. Definitely gave us extra time to come up with a backup plan so that was much appreciated. It’s a great place to stay, Scott and Tom respond very quickly in case you have any questions. It’s in a small town from what it seemed like, we barely saw any people out which in my situation was perfect because it made it feel more like a vacation. I will definitely come back to rent this house if we ever decide to redo our Big Bend trip!”
La Casita is the perfect spot for two. Great location for exploring The Big Bend and easy traveling to Alpine, Marfa, Ft. Davis and The McDonalds Observatory. Wonderful porch to take a mid day snooze or enjoy the wildlife.
“Unique building and setting. The place is on the edge of town overlooking the desert. It has the feel of a farm with chickens and friendly farm dogs roaming the property. This added to the charm. The host is very pleasant and I enjoyed talking to her. Check in and communication with the host was great. The host would check in via the app to see how we were doing during our stay. She gave us local tips and restaurant recommendations. Some drawback of the place is that the building's walls are pretty thin so sound comes through from the other guests and rooms very easily. Thankfully, the other guests were quiet and respectful. Also, the building is old and the temperature regulation of the room would be difficult during extreme heat and extreme cold. The weather was nice during our stay and the small space heater in the room was just fine for our stay. The wifi is very slow but that really isn't the host's fault. The town is in Brewster county which is one of the most rural areas in the US, so internet speed is terrible everywhere. The breakfasts were great and healthy. One negative is that the breakfasts were served at 7 am sharp which is fine if you were a morning person but not as fun if you were there during daylight savings weekend and it was pitch black. The host was in the top 10% of hosts I've stayed with on Airbnb. You will like staying here.”
