Self check-in

Check yourself in with the lockbox.
At Hillwinds House, it’s all about taking a moment to disconnect from your busy life and reconnect with nature.

Build a fire, read a book, brew some coffee, sweat in the sauna, soak in the hot tub (seasonally), prepare a nourishing meal, and watch the sun set over the valley in the west.

We are excited to share our Alberta landscape with its beautiful sky, empty fields, and close up nature details. The 5 acres are filled with wildflowers, look closely and take a moment to enjoy.

The space
Hillwinds House is a cozy Nordic-inspired cabin located on the edge of the Meeting Creek valley. The cabin is nestled in the trees on a 5 acre piece of land.

The cabin is completely off-grid with a wood burning stove inside to keep it warm. The kitchenette has everything you need to prepare meals: a gas stovetop, sink with gravity water faucet, and a YETI cooler stocked with ice packs to keep your food cool.

To access the king sized bed in the loft, a sturdy ladder must be climbed (see photo). Loft and ladder are “use at your own risk.”

A wood burning sauna is located just steps from the main house. Walk out on the wrap-around deck and light the fire in the sauna to get your sweat on. During the winter months, a snow bath is recommended for refreshment. (it feels so good!) We also have a handheld shower to rinse off with after the sauna. A wood-burning hot tub bathing area is tucked along the trees and is available for guests during the warmer months. (June-October, depending how long the weather stays mild enough) We sanitize the tub and fill with fresh water between each guest so you’ll feel fresh and enjoy a natural soak.

There is a dry flush toilet inside the cabin (in its own bathroom) so there’s no need to freeze your butt off in an outhouse. Sanitary wipes and hands sanitizer are conveniently located in the bathroom with the wash basin in the nearby kitchen.

Guest access
As a guest at Hillwinds House, you will have full access to the entire 5 acre property.

Enjoy the spacious deck with valley views, sit in the sauna at dusk and watch the wildlife walk by. (deer, white rabbits, antelope, moose, and coyotes)

Bring your walking shoes, bicycle or e-bike and enjoy the trail that winds down the side of the hill towards the Meeting Creek townsite. Continue on to the Linear Park Trail to enjoy many kilometres of beautiful valley countryside!

When you book a stay at the cabin, we’ll send you a welcome booklet with a list of our favourite places to go and things to do locally.

We’ll be sharing extra info on our social media as well: @hillwindshouse

Other things to note
There is no electricity at Hillwinds House, it’s all part of the experience. We have candles to light when the sun goes down, as well as several rechargeable cozy lanterns. The lanterns will be charged and ready to use when you arrive. A solar lantern is placed outside the door and will welcome you if you arrive after dark.

If you will be needing a place to charge your phone or other device, please let us know in advance and we can make arrangements for this to be possible.

There is good cellular service for most devices at the cabin if you are planning to work remotely. It works well to set up a Personal Hotspot from your phone if you need to send out those important emails.

During the summer months, May to October, we have an outdoor propane BBQ/grill available by request. Please let us know in advance if you would like to use it during your stay and we will have it ready.

My work: Designer and Farmer
I'm a curious wanderer, always on the lookout for authentic food, good coffee, and a new city or country to explore. I grew up on the prairies, spent 10 years in the Pacific Northwest and abroad with my wife. Now we're raising our family on the farm where we both create art in our studio, raise chickens in the barn, and host dinner parties in our farm house nestled at the end of a tree-covered lane.
