Bedstee is a remote, sheltered haven on our croft in a beautiful setting overlooking Little Loch Broom. Situated at the end of an 8 mile single track road off the NC500, it's perfect to explore the Highlands.

Adventure, stunning views, silence and the elements, our cosy, romantic Bedstee has an intimate and nostalgic rustic feel.

Created with love and attention to detail, we wish that you will experience a unique stay in a wonderful little crofting township.

Dogs on leads are very welcome.

The space
Bedstee (pronounced "bedstay") is Dutch for a box bed or alcove bed which was traditionally used in croft houses in Scotland and other Northern European countries such as The Netherlands, Scandinavia, Austria and Brittany. They were usually made of carved wooden planks and had an opening to one side with either a curtain or wooden door. This ensured a cosy and warm night’s sleep!

We created this unique space by sourcing salvaged materials such as driftwood planks and beams, miscellaneous ironmongery and combining them with antique furniture and interesting objects to give as much an authentic rustic character as possible. Enjoy cooking on the vintage gas cooker, whilst listening to “the wireless”.

The newly restored Ulefos wood burning stove from Norway will keep you warm.

The Bedstee cotton linen is crisp and clean (but not necessarily ironed!), blankets, duvets and plenty of cosy pillows.

The colours and materials are inspired by the ones that surround us here: heather, rocks, sea, wild grasses and driftwood.

We hope that in doing so, we can offer a sense of nostalgia, a warmth and simple living that is good for the soul, leaving behind the distractions of modern life, thus inviting you to venture outdoors, or even to relish the cosiness within. Read a book by the warm stove, whilst sipping a wee dram!

Guest access
Bedstee is accessed via our communal front door into the storm porch where you can take off your boots and coats. The glass paneled entrance door to Bedstee is on your right, and ours is on the left, so if you need anything, please feel free to ask.

You may wander down the path to the field below which leads down to the shore through a wild dell, trees and the murmur of the burn. Alternatively you can wander uphill, and just keep going until you reach the top for a most spectacular view. We call it 'the top of the world", because when you get there, you'll know why.

Other things to note
Bedstee is ideal for two people with a cosy queen size bed.

There is also a separate sofa bed in the lounge. Please let us know whilst booking if you require bedding for this.

Heating is from a lovely Norwegian wood burning stove to keep you warm. A basket of wood & kindling per day is provided, but feel free to bring your own if you think you'll need more. Alternatively you can purchase some from our private supply.

As we are in a remote location, we highly recommend stocking up beforehand. The nearest shops and amenities are in Ullapool which is a 50 minute drive away over the Fain pass, or else further away, Dingwall or Inverness which are 1.5 hours away.

We provide you with basics: pasta & rice, herbs from our garden, onion & garlic, salt & pepper, olive oil & balsamic vinegar, vegetable stock, cooking spices and a tin or two, tea, coffee & sugar and breakfast porridge oats.

There are beautiful walks directly from the house. If you want to explore the scenic northwest coast a bit further a car is essential.

Neighborhood highlights

We live in a small remote crofting community that overlooks Little Loch Broom with stunning south facing views of Ardessie falls and backdrop of the An Teallach munros.

You can walk along the shore to the ruins of Kildonan, where settlements and a standing stone date back to the Vikings, or follow the coastal walk to Scoraig, one of Scotland's most remote and off grid communities, accessible only by foot or boat.

The peaks and lochs around you offer endless possibilities for walks and climbs of all levels, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife and flowers.

Further afield, you can reach Gruinard Bay's beautiful sandy beach, or try exploring the Summer Isles by sea kayak. Visit the small fishing town of Ullapool for a bite to eat and drink, groceries, local arts and craft shops and ferry service to the Isle of Lewis.
