At least once a year I pay my property taxes in person so that I have an excuse to visit this glorious building. I dare say it rivals most state Capitols. Of course it is free, and your visit need not take too much time. Another gem of San Francisco is right across the plaza, the Asian Art Museum.

I have been a patron at Martha's almost since it opened. They roast their beans in San Francisco and I often am greeted warmly by Martha herself, which is one of the great aspects of the neighborhood.

It is very small and does not take reservations, so plan to wait a little while. Sometimes it is quicker to sit at the counter. Try Swirl, across the street for a glass of wine while you wait.

These people know everything about electric bikes. It's a perfect place to rent near my house and you're assured of a great time in San Francisco. San Francisco has extensive bike lanes throughout the city. So be sure to take a map and the right route. Be safe, wear your helmet, and lock your bike up.

A couple of friends of mine opened this chic store (There is one for Men and one for women) a few years back. The selection is very well curated. You can find some amazing things here. After being written up in the New York Times their fame, (and prices) took off, but I greatly regret not buying a Prada Tuxedo that was there and gone before I could make up my mind. I have a beautiful Dolce-Gabbana shirt and a few pairs of upscale jeans from here that I love.

If you only have a short time here it is worth taking a moment to get to see California's Great Redwood trees. This is by no means the grandest grove of these majestic trees around, but it is only a short drive across the Golden Gate bridge. Give yourself enough time to hike out into the park, away from the crowds and the parking lot, and you will instantly feel more relaxed and connected to our beautiful planet. Listen to the creatures that create a symphony of sound when you are quiet. If it is the right time of year, sit quietly by the brook running over stones on its way and see how many different levels of pitch and rhythm you can pick out.
