Loix is a quite village and best visited by taking bikes and cycling the coastal path from St Martin. The coast is nature reserve and mud flats and, whilst a fairly long ride, beautiful.

Ré is apparently French slang for the 'crack of the arse' so a village called Ars seems fitting! Quite a large village with a beautiful church, some good retail options, restaurants and quay side.

Les Portes is at the far end of the island but worth the drive. It's a very pretty village with a stunning ancient church with galleries, shops and restaurants.

If the weather is good, leaving the island rarely feels like an imperative. But La Rochelle is a delightful city to visit, rich in naval history and beautifully maintained.

The 'other side of the island' is where the golden, sandy beaches are and they are in abundance. The beaches by Les Bois Plages are most certainly worth a visit.... and accessible by bike or car!
