Food Scene

More expensive than the other suggestions, Sea Me is a modern take on the Portuguese “Cervejaria” (Beer House). If you want a table, book ahead or arrive before 8 p.m. A great variety of fresh fish, (great sushi too), top quality seafood and an efficient service. Oh, and contemporary decoration too.

The owner Manel is a charismatic figure of Bairro Alto. Actually, people travel from all over the country to try the “Feijoada de Javali” (wild boar stew) in this typical local restaurant. Here, unlike the majority of the restaurants in Lisbon where the best option is grilled fish, they specialize in food from the interior countryside of Portugal where the food is heavier and puts together more complex aromas. Ask for the wine list: its one of the best in town!

For the most adventurous guests, this small typical restaurant has all the ingredients of bohemian, informal, traditional Lisbon. The owner, Zé, has been here for more than 20 years and has almost exclusively local clients. Wonderful, home-made food done by Angolan cook Ana. Open only at lunch-time.

There are not many places left like this in Lisbon anymore. Gávea do Mar is a remnant from Lisbon´s past: an old style “Cervejaria” (Portuguese Beer House), with large stone arches inside and a high ceiling. The food, the owner and the waiters have been the same for decades, almost exactly with the same menu and special atmosphere. A memory of old Lisbon: traditional, warm, unpretentious.

Capela opened in 1998 and immediately became the hottest bar for danceable electronic music in town, and has remained so eversince. Techno, House, minimal techno, normally spinned in vinyl records. The decoration is a mixture of Arte Sacra with renaissance aesthetics. Closes at 3 a.m. in weekends.

The Liverpool bar is blatant proof of the past of the “cais do sodré ” area until about 8 years ago: various strip clubs for sailors, old-school bohemians and traditional restaurants. There are no strip clubs anymore, and the crowd has become younger and hip. But the owners and decoration remain the same, with the mirrors, laser lights and intimate corners. The music remains 80's pop and Glam rock as always. Definitely a local charm.
