Shopping Essentials

Buying food etc. The local shops are open from 9:30am – 2:00/2:30pm and again from 5:00/5:30pm – 9:00/9:30pm. The SuperSol supermarket (on the corner of Avda Andalucia and Avda Buenavista) does not close for the siesta and you could buy most of what you need here but the quality of fresh produce is better at the small local shops. The shop-keepers are all friendly and amenable to pointing and halting attempts at the Spanish names for fruit and veg! The bakeries in Vejer (panaderías) open much earlier in the morning so you can get fresh bread for breakfast. The nearest (and best in Vejer!) bakery, Panaderia La Molinera, is just up from SuperSol on Calle Barbate. There is an excellent fruit and veg shop (frutería) with local produce, Frutas JC Capote, (between Cafeteria San Miguel and Cafeteria La Noria) on Avenida San Miguel. The fish and meat shops (pescadería and carnicería) next door to the restaurant Les Perdices on Avda Buenavista, are very good. Paco Zarapico fishmongers (on the corner of Calle Conil and Avenida de Andalucia) is popular with the elderly locals (what better recommendation!). Also shop at Paco Melero on Juan Relinque for embutidos caseros (local sausages) and other meats. It can be difficult to buy fresh milk (leche fresca) in Vejer. SuperSol has it most days but not always. You can though buy UHT long-life milk readily. Recently, Kombucheria, a health food shop on Calle Martin Alonso de Mesa, has started stocking fresh milk regularly. Unless you want goats’ milk make sure you pick up “Leche de Vache”! Mercadona supermarkets seem to have a regular supply of fresh milk so stock up when in Barbate or Tarifa if needed. (whole milk = entera; semi-skimmed = semi desnatada; skimmed = desnatada)
