Neighbourhoods

Buccoo has a very long sandy beach and it's one of the safest beaches on the island because the bottom under your feet doesn't drop off suddenly and there are no rip tides. There are lifeguards on the beach and also some places where you can rent sun loungers as well as get drinks and snacks. Buccoo is known for it's weekly Sunday School music event that starts with the steel pan at around 7 until 9pm followed by DJs until the early hours of the morning. The village is also the home of goat racing but they are not so regular so if you catch one during your visit, count yourself lucky! The main races are on Easter Tuesday and around Christmas time and Carnival. If you want to visit Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool, there are various tour operators that launch from the jetty and you don't need to go to Store Bay or Pigeon Point to get there. We recommend Pops Tours Tobago as they are licensed etc (you can tell if the boat has a 'TL' on it or not. If it says 'TFT' it is NOT LICENSED! Those are fishing boats that are not permitted to carry passengers other than the fishermen it's registered to so please be aware and stay safe.

The highlight of Buccoo Reef is a stop at Nylon Pool. Where else can you stand in the middle of the sea and enjoy crystal clear waters?

If you want to try kite surfing, wind surfing or join a bioluminescence tour to see the planktons lit up at night, these are the best people for this experience. Other people claim they offer this tour too but we can only recommend Radical.

Every Sunday night our village hosts the free Sunday School music event (nothing to do with school or church!). The steelpan plays between 9-11pm and then DJs play until the early hours of the morning. It's just 5 minutes walk from us (but the music doesn't disturb us where we are)

Love horses or have never tried riding one? Right here in our village is this organisation of rescued horses that offers daily rides (booking in advance is required!) - the correct website to contact them at is via Being with Horses (the 'healing' site is for their work with differently abled children etc, not the rides)

Traveler advice

Getting around

Renting a car is the best way to get around

The car rental we recommend is Sheppy's Auto Rentals, they have small jeeps etc. Tobago is small so if you get lost, you won't be lost for long! Just be aware that some drivers don't use their indicator much and might pull over suddenly so keep your breaking distance. Local buses run once an hour w'days, every 2 hours w'ends (until 6pm Saturdays, 4pm Sundays) fr Buccoo to Scarborough and tickets must be bought before (you can't pay on the bus). There are also shared route taxis with 'H' licence plates ('Hire'), NOT the 'P' cars ('Private') that unlicensed! Bicycles can also be rented.
Customs and culture

Say good morning and good night

Generally everyone says a greeting as they pass each other on the street in villages, whether you know them or not.
Book before you go

Foreign currency

It's best to have a travel credit card to make withdrawals from ATMs as there is no bureau de change at the airport. GBP, CAD and Euro can be changed at a local bank (there is no ATM in our village and the nearest bank is a 10 minute drive away). Many places will accept payment in USD at a rate of 6:1. A lot of places don't accept payment by card so you will need to have cash with you when moving around.
