Sunday river ski resort is the second largest in Maine and the sixth largest in New England.

Sunday River is a ski resort located in Newry, Maine, in the United States. It is one of Maine's largest and most visited ski resorts. Its vertical drop of 2,340 feet is the second largest in Maine and the sixth largest in New England!
Anyone who loves winter can have a great time at Sunday River. It is an expansive mountain with six peaks, with a great layout. The terrain is somewhat geared toward expert skiers, and anyone can get across the resort, skiing across the peaks. There is an entire area dedicated to beginners with a terrain park and glade skiing. The lift lines are manageable, and usually very short once you’re past the parking lot. Sunday River also has night skiing. This is one of the best things about the resort. March is the biggest snow month, and it is also maple sugar time. Sunday River has a working sugar shack on the mountain, with sap drawn from buckets tapped into trees along the trails. The Sunday River Sugaring House is on a beginner trail, and it is a log cabin where you can watch syrup being made and taste the cold snap. You can also buy maple sugar candy.

Black Mountain of Maine is a family-friendly ski resort. As New England's best ski value, they offer skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing for non-skiers at an affordable price with free season passes for kids grades 2 and under. Really very fair lift ticket prices here. Excellent terrain, clean lodge, friendly staff, and just a fun mountain. Parking is easy, lunch is great, and the tubing is a blast.

Located along the Swift River, Coos Canyon is a great roadside park to stop for a swim or enjoy a picnic. The canyon is utterly beautiful. The rocks lining the canyon walls have uniquely carved lines in them, due to erosion over the years. What a great place to walk among the rocks and peer into water-formed holes in the rocks. Great little gift shop with lots of rocks and minerals.

Perched beside Route 17 in western Maine, the Height of Land offers you an expansive look at the sprawling Rangeley Lakes region and the mountains beyond. This viewpoint, on the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway, has been declared one of the finest in the state, if not New England. Expanded parking and viewing areas make the Height even better. This is a must for your fall foliage drive. The views are outstanding along with the signage at the location. This stop area is very well kept! Height of Land is reported to be one of the finest and prettiest spots in Maine.

A sweet spot to visit when going to Black Mountain of Maine. The Rumford Falls, on the Androscoggin River, was discovered in the late 1800s and by the early 1900s, an hydro-electric power plant was in full operation. The Rumford Falls is the highest falls east of Niagra Falls with a total extended drop of approximately 188 feet. At the base of the falls is a beautiful reflection pool that was once the fishing grounds for the Abenaki Indians (there are several silhouettes demonstrating the Indians's art of fishing). The park at the base of the falls, next to the reflection pool, is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the tranquility and impressiveness of the falls. Hard to find a better place to take the family for a picnic.

Within the Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve, two trails lead to the summit from the parking lot providing either two distinct experiences or the opportunity for a loop. The Red/Orange Trail starts at the red gate directly across from the parking area, and is marked with red/orange flags. The Starr Trail, marked by yellow blazes and ribbons, starts at the gray gate, about 100 yards north of the parking area on the East Andover Road.

We could have stayed all day just admiring the beautiful view, enjoying the sun and the refreshing breeze. I wish I could live on this pond in the summertime. It really is big enough to be a lake and it goes by a couple of different names. It was quiet with just a few people around. A boat ride around the pond is ideal to fully appreciate the beauty of the area. The sand is like flour and the sunset is one of the best.

It's a small, but extraordinarily well done museum. The displays are informative and well laid out. The geology pieces they have displayed are stunning. The staff is possibly some of the friendliest museum staff I've ever met. Small gift store has a nice selection of goodies with an emphasis on gems mined in New England. Worth a visit.
