Our lovely countryside village
Collingham is a 3 mile drive, cycle or walk from us. This is our closest village and it's very much an English countryside village, it has some beautiful old buildings, a lovely church and lots of services available for our guests; Co-op, One Stop Convenience Store, JD Nicholson butchers, Post Office & Newsagents, Beaumont House Charity shop, Eclipse Hair and Beauty, Collingham Medical Centre and Pharmacy, Collingham Dental Practice, Collingham Vets and even a Community Library. There are two cafés in Collingham - Beyond Coffee, which is next to Coop and they offer either a sit down or take-away service and Lulu's Kitchen on the High Street and they offer a take-away coffee and sandwich service. There are also three pubs in the village: The Royal Oak which is a community pub and restaurant, Rose Orchard which also has a Chinese restaurant or take-away service that will deliver to us and The Cat Asylum Brewing Company who brew their own beer and have open days/ events throughout the summer months - it's a very quirky place to visit. There are several other local pubs and we'd recommend: The Lord Nelson at Winthorpe, The Five Bells at Bassingham and The Green Man at Norton Disney. Other local places to eat are The Village Fish Bar in Collingham (Fish & Chips), Pearson's Nursery and Tea Room and The Oakridge with a farm shop, cafe and bar. The park in Collingham is ideal for kids of all ages, with lots of play equipment and a skate park it's one of the best in the area. Bus and Train service are available from Collingham and these offer transport to local villages, Lincoln & Newark which has further connections to the rest of the UK.

Cherry Oak Barn

Information and guidance about your stay
Dog Guests at Cherry Oak Barn We love dogs! And we understand how they are just as important as any other guests we host. In the past we've always found it difficult to find nice places to stay that are dog friendly, so we decided right from the start of our venture that it was important to say YES to the question of allowing dogs to stay here. In order to keep the barn looking nice for other guests we do have a few rules which we kindly ask you to follow - PLEASE clean up after your dog We're not just talking about dog mess (poo), although this does include poo! If your dog is a messy eater or has muddy paws, then please clean up after them. Feel free to use the hose at the side of the barn to wash off any muddy paws and we have supplied you with an old towel to dry them. PLEASE don't leave your dog unattended in the garden We're happy for you and your dog to use the lawned area but this does come with a caveat - although the garden and adjoining paddock is fenced, walled, gated or stock fenced we advise guests that it's not safe to leave dogs unattended in these areas. If you're worried about your dog potentially escaping then there are gates at both ends of the decking area. PLEASE don't let your dog onto the sofa or beds We ask you to kindly stick to the 'paws on the floor' rule. We appreciate that your dog may be used to sitting on the sofa or sleeping on the bed at home but we ask you not to encourage them up and ask them to get down if they are already up. If you're really struggling with them getting up then please tell us and we can supply you with some protective blankets. We will really appreciate your help in following these few simple rules. WALKIES!!! The closest place to walk is the field behind the barn. There is a public footpath which cuts diagonally across the field. For access come out of the front of the property onto the main road, turn right and after about 10 yards you will find a stile on the righthand side. Climb over the stile and use the path to head straight for the old oak tree, from there continue using the path to the edge of the field, you can then use the small bridge to walk over the ditch and follow the path across the next field, head towards to opposite corner following the path until you come to the road. From here you can either head back, continue on to Stapleford Woods (turn right along the road for about 50 yards and then turn left along the track, woods are about 1 mile away) or follow the road back (turn right, then right at the T-Junction). Stapleford Woods The woods can be entered by walking from the property, as explained above but you can also drive or cycle there. The main entrance/ car park is about 2 miles away and if you turn left from the property and follow the road until you reach a fork, take the righthand turn and after about 2 minutes you'll find a sign for Stapleford Woods on the righthand side, turn into the entrance for the main car park. Parking is free. Spalford Warren This is one of our favourite places to walk because the soil is quite sandy, so less mud in the winter months or rainy days. A lovely woodland walk where you can let your dog off the lead to explore freely. If you drive from Collingham on the A1133, after about 10 mins look out for a green fence on the righthand side, turn right where it's sign posted 'Nottinghamshire Nature Lakes' (but don't go there as this is a business). You can park near the entrance or further along this road and parking is free. Scone and Devon Park, Newark Easy flat walking and fairly good for pushchairs etc. There is a lovely play area for kids with swings and climbing apparatus at one end. You can stroll along the wooded riverside walk and it suddenly feels as if you're in the countryside rather than a park. Easy to find from the A46, as you head back into Newark on the B6166. Voluntary parking charge is £1. Hartsholme Country Park On the outskirts of Lincoln is a 200 acre country park, with lakes and wooded walks. Again, easy flat walking and good for pushchairs etc. Popular with local dog walkers and is very family friendly. We've found it can get quite busy at the weekend but fine during the week. There are lots of birds to watch, deers roam freely and squirrels for dogs to chase. We've even seen kingfishers! Farndon Circular Walk A lovely circular walk of about 3 1/2 miles that mainly follows the river Trent and passes by the marina and through Farndon pits. Park in the car park next to The Riverside pub and picnic area, there is also another pub on route - which is an old ferry converted into a pub and aptly named The Farndon Ferry. There are lots of things to do with your dog(s) as well as the many local walks. We've listed a few a few below and you can also use these websites for further guidance http://www.visitlincoln.com/dogs and http://www.dogfriendlybritain.co.uk/r/dog-friendly-dog-days-out/4/c/nottinghamshire/1 All of the below recommendations we have listed elsewhere in the guidebook, where you will find further information Lincoln Cathedral Dogs welcome throughout Lincoln Castle To visit the inside check the website for 'dog friendly' days and if you are only visiting the outside grounds then dogs on lead are allowed all year Doddington Hall & Gardens Dogs on lead allowed Lincoln Arboretum Dogs on lead allowed International Bomber Command Centre You can't take your dogs inside (guide dogs only) but dogs are allowed in the grounds and outside areas around the monument Newark Air Museum Dogs on leads allowed Bransby Horses Dogs on leads allowed Open-Top Sightseeing Bus Tour Dogs on leads allowed Brayford Belle Boat Trips Dogs on leads allowed

Lincoln

Sightseeing and Places to Visit
Lincoln is a 20 minute drive away and is one of the most picturesque cities we've ever been to. Our favourite things include the spectacular cathedral, the castle with its interesting gaol and Magna Carta Vault and the International Bomber Command Centre. The lower part of the city has the usual chainstores that you would expect but as you ascend Steep Hill you will find so many lovely independent shops to visit for those extra special unique items to take home with you. TOP TIP: Steep Hill is aptly named! If you are feeling lazy or are likely to have problems with the ascent for health reasons then the bus is a great option - take the bus up to the top of the hill, get off at the castle stop and it's all downhill from there. We usually make use of the Park and Ride getting in because although there is a great carpark in the town centre, traffic can be busy - it's nice to take the bus so that you can relax and enjoy the sights along the way. The Christmas Market in Lincoln is amazing! Huge! Everything you could possibly need for present shopping.

The Bomber Command Memorial is the UK's tallest war memorial. Beautiful, moving and not to be missed, it tells the story of the history of bomber command in Lincolnshire. An interesting place to visit for children and adults alike. It's so tall you can see it from Lincoln Castle!

This is a must visit if you are visiting Lincoln. You can visit just the grounds for free or take a walk around the castle wall, visit the jail and take a look at the Magna Carta, one of only three copies available to view. The Castle Square has lots of lovely places to eat and drink with Olivares Tapas Bar being one of our favourites.

Another must visit place whilst in Lincoln, combine with Lincoln Castle as they are right next to each other. The Cathedral is a stunning building with its gothic style and high elevation within Lincoln it really is something to behold- if you've ever visited Notre Dame and was impressed then this is equally as impressive. Try to find the Lincoln Imp, which is great fun if you've got kids. Religious service held on Sunday with restricted entry

The museum collection is a varied social history that reflects and celebrates the culture of Lincolnshire and its people from 1750 to the present day. Want to be scared? Don't worry it's not that scary, you stroll around the historic part of Lincoln (the part with the Castle & Cathedral) being told ghost stories along with some interesting historical facts about Lincoln and some of the residence. Sit back and relax on the Brayford Belle canal trip for about 50 minutes with entertaining commentary about Lincoln's past and present. See if you can spot any terrapins, fish or snakes swimming in the river. Check before leaving as they close on very wet or windy day.

Newark-on-Trent

Sightseeing and Places to Visit
Newark is 10 mins away by car and we highly recommend a visit! A picturesque market town with lots of history, the guidebooks describe it as a 'thriving market town' and we couldn't agree more; with regular markets in the town square and several heritage attractions it's a great place to start for sightseeing. There are also lots of antique and vintage shops, art galleries and boutique fashion and gift shops. The National Civil War Centre - the Nottinghamshire Civil War Trail.

Sherwood Forest is a 35 min drive from us. It's not just all about Robin Hood, although that's a big selling point we admit! It's a truly stunning forest. We like to walk from the visitor centre or hire bikes at the cycle centre and explore the many cycle routes which are clearly marked in terms of difficulty. Definitely visit the Major Oak which is about a 15 min walk from the visitor centre, it's quite spectacular. We recommend taking a picnic - there are lots of lovely places to sit and enjoy soaking up nature.

Stapleford Woods are within walking distance via the public pathway from the back of the barn. However, you can drive or cycle to the main car park, which is about 2 miles away. Other than the field walk from the back of the barn, this is your closest place to walk and it's a lovely woodland stroll.

If you're a twitcher then this is a great place to visit, we especially like the pontoon walkway through the middle of the lake whilst looking for the elusive bearded tit amongst the reeds. Unfortunately but understandably no dogs within the RSPB grounds.

Another great place for a bit of bird watching, the main hide is covered and a great place to sit and watch the wildlife. There is also a nice walk around the lake and dogs accepted on a lead.

If you fancy a movie night than this is the place to visit, it's a bit of a drive (about 35 mins) and yes, there are other cinemas in both Newark and Lincoln but The Kinema in the Woods is also an experience and not just watching a film. It's unique, different and highly recommended.

Costal Retreats

Our favourite costal retreat. Lovely long sandy beach, nice cafe and bar, toilets and car park. It can get busy at the weekends, so suggest you get there early. Dogs allowed on the beach to the righthand side.

Just up the road from Andersby Creek is Moggs Eye, also known as Huttoft Beach. A quiet, rural beach backed by grassy sand dunes. Popular with walkers and there are currently no restrictions on dog walking on the beach. Car park, toilets and a good picnic area.

Theddlethorpe Beach is definitely one for nature lovers. A superb unspoilt landscape of salt marshland and sands. Designated a National Nature Reserve and there are a range of habitats here; tidal sand and mudflats, salt and freshwater marshes and sand dunes. The marshes behind the beach are one of only a few location in the UK where the natterjack toad can be found. With all this beach you don’t have to worry about it getting busy, because it never does, even in the height of summer. Dogs allowed all seasons

Probably the most popular seaside town in Lincolnshire and with so many activities, things to do and places to eat and drink you can spend all day (and evening) here. Skegness’s award-winning sandy beach is long with a promenade, pleasure pier and large amusement park. There are plenty of car parks and a railway station within easy walking distance.
