The Venetian Port of Chania with the Egyptian Lighthouse is bigger than the rest two ports of the same era, that of Heraklion and Rethymnon. A walk along its sides is one of the best experiences in Greece, as the entire area in conjunction with the Old Venetian Town is a vibrant Venetian monument. During the Venetian and Turkish periods, Chania presented a high development in commerce and marine mercantile. Not only in imports but also the export of various products was notable, despite the lack of a large and safe port. Since this time, it was common knowledge that the port of Chania was vulnerable due to the weather conditions and for this reason, it was not considered an appropriate port. The natural port of Souda, on the other hand, was in a much better position and was perfect for a port. The Egyptian Lighthouse, which is one of the oldest in the world, prevails in the old Port of Chania. The sea-tossed stone lighthouse that is located at the edge of the breakwater, is not only the “guard” of the old Venetian port, but also its most famous jewel. The lighthouse was constructed by the Venetians at the end of 16th century. It has been reconstructed by the Egyptians during the period 1830-40, when English had assigned Crete to the regent of Egypt, Mehmet Ali. At the end of the Ottoman empire, the project had been completed with the addition of the ladder in its east side, as well as pipes, through which passes sea water under the surface of its base. The lighthouse has a hight of 21m, height from sea surface 26m and its light reaches a distance of 7 miles. Its base is oktagonal, the middle part has 16 angles, while the top part is circular.

Koum Kapi: An especial corner of Chania city Koum Kapi is one of the quarters of Chania city with the richest history. It is also one of the most picturesque parts of the city, as it lies between the Old City of Chania and the Halepa quarter. Koum Kapi is the quarter just outside the eastern part of the old walls of Chania city. It is located on a coastal part of the city, with a beautiful beach. The quarter of Koum Kapi took its name after the Turkish word “Kum Kapisi”, which means Sand Gate. The Sand Gate, or the “Sabionera”, as its original Venetian name was, was indeed a big gate of the old walls of Chania city, which led to a beautiful sandy beach. Koum Kapi – one of the prettiest quarters of Chania city If you take a stroll in Koum Kapi, you will be pleasantly surprised: The view to the beach and the eastern coast of Chania city is excellent, and there are many quality cafes and taverns. Koum Kapi is generally the choice of the young people of Chania city, but during the summer months you can find people of every age and nationality having a good time here. The locals are usually visiting the quarter for an evening coffee or for their first drink early in the night. If you walk south from the beach and into the areas where the locals live, you will find some modern buildings, but also some older ones – some of the oldest in Chania city. This has to do with the noteworthy history of the Koum Kapi quarter.

Tabakaria, situated in the rocky eastern region of Chania, is the district where, since the early 19th century, the tanneries for processing leather were located. It is a very atmospheric region, an architectural monument of the industrial age. The installation of tanneries happened between 1830 and 1840, during the period of the Egyptian Crete. The location chosen for the tanneries of Chania was the most appropriate: pretty far and yet near the city, in a place with abundant groundwater, brackish water, next to the shallow sea that was useful for the first stage of leather processing. During the 50s, there were more than 80 tanneries, while today only six still operate. Tabakaria is an integral part of the history of Chania. The buildings where they were housed are still standing, some more well-preserved, while in the older ones only the shells are left standing. Adapted to the natural inclinations of the landscape, the tanneries of Tabakaria have only a ground floor with an entrance from the street and two or three floors from the side of the sea. Built with stone and tiled roofs, they are arranged in a row and interrupted only by very narrow passages with steep stairs to the sea, creating a unique architectural ensemble.

When an idea becomes reality, when a dream becomes reality, then nature and man join forces. More specifically, we are talking about an idea that was launched by Mr. George Chavalekakis in 1990. A little taste and some stones from the White Mountains were enough to create a multipurpose area, where we meet even today. Its name <<KOUMOS>> in other words the house of sheppard in the mountainous villages of Crete. It is an area of four acres with private parking and is located in Kalyves, Apokoronas, Chania. Enlarging its interior, you will discover the small stone church of Saint Lydia of the Philippines and a museum area. Within this, you will find artifacts from World War II as well as traditional tools from the earlier Crete. Along its length, you will find a recreation area where you can enjoy your meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner), coffee or even your sweet. On your evening entertainment, we’ve also solved it by creating the <<KOUMOS cocktail bar>>. In this place, you can taste and feel the freshness of a drink or cocktail of your choice.

The famous Gorge of Samaria in Chania, Crete Greece: The Gorge of Samaria lies on the southern side of Chania prefecture and is a wonderful place for hikers. Visitors from all over the world attempt trekking at this gorge. In 1962, Samaria Gorge had been declared a National Park for the survival of the endangered species kri-kri, the rare Cretan wild goat that lives only in Samaria. Apart from the kri-kri, many other endemic and rare species of flora and fauna live in this gorge. The length of this gorge is 16 km and it is said to be the longest gorge in Europe. It has been created by a river that runs between the enormous White Mountains and Mount Volakias. The gorge begins below the northern side of Omalos Plateau and ends in the shores of the Lybian Sea, at the village of Agia Roumeli. The actual distance of this long trek in the park itself is 13 km, but from the exit point of the park, one has to walk another 3 km to reach the village of Agia Roumeli, from where one can get transportation services, thus making it a total of 16 km long trek. The breadth of the gorge differs from 150 m to 3.5 m. At the highest points, these looming mountain walls reach a height of 500 m above sea level. The time taken to complete the trek differs from 4 to 7 hrs, depending on the capacity of every trekker. There are operators and guides to organize trips from Chania Town to Samaria Gorge or you can take the public urban buses from Chania Town to Omalos. The War Museum in Askyfou, Chania Crete: In the mountainous village of Askyfou, 50 km south of Chania, there is an interesting war museum that was created by the initiative of a local man. Georgios Hatzidakis, born in 1931, started to collect weaponry at the age of 14. He would collect anything he found in the village, mostly weapons from the Second World War, but as he was growing up, he was also interested to find other weapons that dated from the Cretan Revolution of 1770 or even older. Later on, he created this war museum to host his large collection. There, visitors can see many interesting exhibits, including guns, revolvers, carbines, mortars, mortar shells, binoculars, military uniforms, even the helix of a German helicopter that fell in Crete during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. The oldest exhibit of the museum is a canon that dates from 1770, while the largest exhibit is a German bomb.

Lake Kournas is the largest natural lake in Crete and is located in an enchanting landscape, between the west slopes of the White Mountains and the fertile plane of Georgioupolis. It is located near the village Kournas, 2.5km south of the beach of Georgioupolis, 43km east of Chania and 20km west of Rethymnon. Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece, as the wider area of Apokoronas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. Moreover, visitors could either pedal or kayak in the lake. This is an ideal choice for the afternoon, when the color of the water is beautiful and the lake is very calm. During winter and spring the water level is higher and walking around the lake is difficult because the vegetation is dense the bank. The beaches are disappearing and water overwhelms even the stairs located next to the restaurants.

Balos Chania Crete: Balos is among the best beaches in Greece and one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete that lies 60 km north west of Chania Town. Balos is reached trough a track raod from Kaliviani, a village close to Kissamos. This track road is about 10 km and can be crossed by a 4-wheel car. Otherwise, visitors can go by excursion boat from Kissamos. I would recommend a day trip with a boat which combine Balos and the Historic castle of Gramvousa Island

The seaside of village is located at a distance of about 71 km. south of Chania, at the end of Cape Mouri. It is believed that this was the site of the ancient city of Finikas, and was the port of ancient Anopolis. Later, it became the winter time port of the town of Sfakia, due to the fact that the enclosed bay and the small island in its entrance create a natural harbor where ships can be safe even at very bad weather conditions. The only access is by boat or as you wish, by foot ! Loutro is a place for those people who want something different. For example there are no big hotels with swimming pools. There are no overcrowded streets, restaurants and beaches, there are no cars!!. A small picturesque fishing village in south west Crete, not yet spoilt by mass tourism. Discover the beautiful beaches like glyka nera ( sweet water ),timios stavros, pervolaki, marmara, (the most are naturist beach) and enjoy the sun, sea and peaceful tranquility. Here you will find the rest and peace you are looking for and if you want there are lots of things to do ! Enjoy walking in the scenic, unspoilt mountain countryside with its valleys and gorges. of course you never think about the weather forecast , the weather is almost always warm and sunny. The great high mountains on the north side of the village give a big protection during the seasons. The people are friendly and hospitable and will always be there for you.

Marmara or Dialiskari beach is am amazing secluded small pebbly bay shaped near the exit of the imposing Aradena Gorge, in Sfakia region. It is located 85km south of Chania city and 5km west of Loutro. It is the beach where the ramblers of Aradena Gorge rest before continuing their course to Loutro. The name Marmara means "marbles" and is named after the soft colorful rocks and sea caves, that consist the most striking featiure of the place. The beach is 60' walking distance from the closest inhabited beach of Lykos and 75' from Loutro. There are no roads here, so walking or boat are the only possible means to reach the place. There is one small tavern near the beach, where you can eat really good food (reservations are needed!) and umbrellas on the beach. During the summer, there are daily boats from Loutro. Once in the Loutro area, visiting Marmara and hiking in the gorge of Aradena is highly suggested.
