Closest Grocery Stores to the Cabin

These following locations are the closest the cabin. They range from a couple of ultra-local convenience stores to a full fledged, albeit small grocery store in Thorsby.
Great little, small town grocery store. It has a lot of selection considering it's size. This store is in the town of Thorsby, about at 10-minute drive north from the cabin. The only thing about this store that drives me crazy is they do not carry fresh cilantro. They say there isn’t enough demand LoL. 5101 50 Ave, Thorsby, AB T0C 2P0 8 am--8 pm, Monday-Sunday Phone: (780) 789-2132

This convenience store is about a 5 minute drive away from the cabin, going east. It is in the village of Mulhurst, right next to the local golf course and a large park. Besides being a convenience store, they also sell liquor. So if that's all you need, while staying at the cabin, BayView Groceries, will be quicker, than heading into Thorsby. You will also get to see a little bit more of the local area. For instance, the Mulhurst Bay Memorial Park is right next to the store. It would be perfect for the kids. The Mulhurst Bay Books & Gift Store is just up the road, and they just might have that perfect item you were looking for. Oh, of course Hilah Ayers has volleyball, horse shoe pits and a food truck. Bay View Groceries is open from 10-6, and 10-7 on Friday and Saturday. They are sometimes closed between 1-2 for their lunch break. 5702 49 St, Mulhurst, AB T0C 2C0 Phone: (780) 389-3784

Closest Pet Food Store

This store will provide you with more high-end food selections for your pet than the local grocery store. And, if you forgot your dogs leash, or want to pick up some pet wipes and doggie poo bags, then this is the place to go.
If you forgot something for your pet, while on your travels, this store will take of it. I have always been impressed with the great selection of high quality foods that this store carries in such a little town. This store has a Facebook page. You can reach them at 780-789-0147. 4905 Hankin St, Thorsby, AB T0C 2P0 10 a.m.-6p.m.

On the west side of the lake. Pigeon Lake Provincial Park has a ton of trails for walking, hiking, bicycling, and cross country skiing. So you can use it spring, summer, fall and winter. There is loop A 3 km (long), loop B 2 km (long), loop C (5 km long), and the TransCanada Trail section which is 1.6 km long. There is no fee to use the trails. When you go, it is considered "day use." There are only fees if you want to bring in a rig or tent and camp overnight. In the winter, volunteers groom the trails. In the summer, there is usually a concession stand that sells of all things-- banana ice cream (at least it used to). So if you are hiking or bicycling in the summer, you can stop and have a swim or enjoy the awesome kids' playground before you continue on your journey. This phone number for Alberta Parks should be able to provide more information: (403)748-3939.

On the north side of the lake. A place with religious and historic significance to the area, Rundle's mission also puts on programming for children and adults. This area is about a 9 minute drive away from the cabin. Rundle's Mission was established in 1847 on the shores of Pigeon Lake, near Thorsby, Alberta, by a Methodist missionary named Robert Rundle. From the mission, Rundle taught Cree people about Christianity and agriculture, refusing to acquiesce to pressures from the Hudson's Bay Company, or the government, to further influence local first peoples. The mission also holds community events like the Annual Harvest Supper and the Pigeon Lake Fish Fry. Give this long-time Pigeon Lake establishment a call when you are planning on visiting the lake. It always has something planned and you are always welcome to partake. Check out the Facebook page or Web site. Highway 616x and Highway 771 Phone:780-389-2422 info@rundlesmission.org
